As with most of the early Sadler books, this one is a great story of adventure and war. The main premise here is that a band of vikings, led by the main character, reached Central America long before Cortes, and become embroiled in a petty war. Casca's immortality helps him win over the people who regard him as a god but there is a price to pay, as Casca finds out in the end.

This series came out before the movie Highlander did, and if Casca were made right, it would blow highlander away! Read these novels and you will see.

This is one of the best book I've ever read.

I think the best of the whole series. The characters are believable, the love angle some what unique to Sadler's novels, the battles the usual Sadler gore-and-guts, so you have something for both the guys and gals. I just love Glam's character, and its very true as I know one or two like him! Definitely a hit.

This is a wonderfully written story that even the women will love. Casca finds a true love of his life only to be betrayed at every turn. Tragic but so very rare in realistic writing that only the great Barry Sadler could write! Oh, how he is missed!

This was my first CASCA book I ever read and it had me hooked right away. Its a good story of a man journeying east to China to serve in the court of the Emperor Tzin. There's plenty of action, betrayal and humour scattered amongst the fighting to give it a well balanced feel. I particularly liked the passages referring to his stay in the inn at Dubrae. This follows on from God of Death so read that one before this in order to get the context of this story right.

I lost my copy of this book and have lamented the fact since. Best book about the gladiator era I have ever read. Very descriptive, interesting account of a slave boy raised expressly for the arena. Highly recommended.

Written like an autobiography, this book pulls you in from the very beginning and keeps you interested until the very end. A slave baby, born beneath the great Arena in Ceasar Augusta's Rome, the story's hero grows into the most feared gladiator of his time. Good action writing style from Barry Sadler, author of The Green Berets and Casca books. This book makes you wish we had gladiatorial combat in the 90's rather than that wimpy sport of boxing

Sadler brings to the reader the abuses and the bravo sierra of the military, as well as the Brotherhood of men who have survived combat together. This book hit the shelves some time before Col. David Hackworth's <> followed.

<> picks up where <> ended. Casca, going by the name Carl Langers, E&E's from Berlin to France, where he enlists in the Foreign Legion. After training, he ships out to Indochina, where he links up with his old buddy, the inimitable, unforgettable and eternally lovable Gustav Beidemann. Casca, Gus and a couple of newfound buddies face two enemies; the Viet Minh, and a murderous, self-serving petty criminal of a Sergent, who is a poster child for fragging.

Casca's analysis and condemnation of Communism is "iron on target." Gus' tormenting of the scumbag Sergent is highly amusing...and inspiring. Sergent Scumbag's gross maltreatment of his men typifies what Colonel Hackworth decries in real life.

There is plenty of action throughout. Sadler brings the War to life with the same virtuosity as Crane, Remarque and Guy Sajer. Most poignantly, he shares the Love felt between men who fight together.

Whether you look at this as entertainment, history, or the story of four buddies trying to survive the war, the opposition and their NCO, <> is an excellent read!

Dr. Sadler's rather brilliant analysis of the statistical data available is outshined only by the vision he brings to the problems of EIA aestetics. His books will be looked at in 50-100 years as glaring blueprints of "what can happen"

The man who wrote President George Bush's (Sr.) speech to the Brazil conference of 1994 is a visionary, history will vindicate his findings.

A well written assessment of EIA. Mr. Sadler looks at the difference between academics writing and talking about what "should" happen and what is actually feasible in a market capitalistic society.

This series by the author Barry Sadler is a modern blend of two ancient legends. The first is the legend of the roman centurion Longinus who was supposedly present at Christ's crucifixion.
He stabbed christ in the side with his spear to end his agony on the cross and afterwards he became a christian convert and a

The next legend is that of the wandering jew who was supposedly cursed by Christ to wander the world until the second coming.
The reason according to the story why he incurred the wrath of Christ was that he out of spite made a derogatory or insulting remark to Jesus as he was being led to his crucifixion.
The result of this blend has been Casca Longinus,a Roman soldier cursed by Christ to wander the world forever until the second coming.
Forever fighting,forever surviving and waiting for him to return.
This series of adventures takes our protagonist down through history from one war to another. In almost each case he endures wounds and horrible pain only to encounter more.
A strange unexplained power makes his flesh heal miraculously from all wounds inflicted and which renders it along with his blood poisonous to all other creatures man included.
His ability to outlive others makes his existence a lonely one without any lasting friendship or company. He finds himself in many cases the victim of other's brutality and hatred thus making his long existence also a harsh and violent one.
That which he desires so much eludes him and that is death,which is freedom from his brutal life and eternal peace. He is not so much a hero as he is a victim of fate in a situation not of his choice.
There is plenty of historic detail in this series much of it dealing with warfare and the military.
For those who want historic fact mixed with fiction this might be worth a try.
For fans of action adventure series in the tradition of "The Executioner" and the "A Team" this is a good recomendation.
There is plenty of fast-paced action in this series and it's guaranteed to keep you from yawning.
There are graphic descriptions of violence and gore so if if you're looking for light reading then I suggest reading Robert Fulghum instead.

A while back a friend of mine mentioned something about a series of books following a man who is immortal, and this man was immortal because he was cursed to live forever by Christ as he was dying on the Cross. The man's name is Casca. Casca is a soldier of the Roman army around the time of Christ's death, sometime around 33 A.D. Casca is the soldier assigned to the mundane task of waiting for Jesus to die while he kept the small crowd around the Cross at bay. When told to finish the Jew off Casca stabs him in the side, just as the Bible tells it, but Jesus has a few words with Casca. The rest of Casca's life is then changed, and so the legend begins. Anyone interested in historical fiction and/or immortality should definitely read this book if not the entire series of 22 books spanning 2000 years.

In the Eternal Mercenary Casca life goes from soldier, to slave, to extreme popularity very quickly, but I don't want to give too much away. Read this book, the first in a long series of great stories about the man made to live until the return of the Jew. Until we meet again.

I own all of the original books and still reread them. Great series and definately worth buying. I'm just sorry the series stopped (yes, I know why). Like the idea of a movie or TV series.
