Excellent for prospective teachers!
Those Who Can, Teach discusses modern American education. The book is divided into sections on schools, teachers, students, the history of education, and careers in teaching. The reader will learn, for example, theories of learning; rules of conduct governing educators; issues confronting students; and the role of technology in the classroom.

Those Who Can, Teach explores the diverse and complex aspects of the education profession from grade school to high school.

A very comprehensive overview of the teaching profession.
I especially like the keywords and reflections at the end of each chapter. I am currently using this book as a text in a course designed for students who are seriously considering teaching as a career.

The Legion's defining battle.
In Aubagne France, on April 30 of every year, a wooden hand is solemnly paraded in a ceremony commemorating the most sacred battle of the French Foreign Legion. In a dusty hamlet in a remote corner of Mexico, Captain Danjou, the owner of the hand, and 64 other Legionnaires held off a force of over 2000 Mexicans, until the last handful of survivors, wounded and out of ammunition, prepared a bayonet charge. Camerone exemplifies the courage and sacrifice of the Legion, in a tradition which is carried forth even today. The story is told well here, with clear maps and illustrations.

Powerful images bring Indian Saints alive on every page
This is not your average book on Indian masters. While the introduction and biographies set the tone for entire work, it is the photos and accompanying quotes which make this book an actual artifact. The context is one of recognition that a spiritual master is not just a teacher, in the usual sense of someone who imparts knowledge. A master is understood to be one who embodies that knowledge/wisdom, and transmits this state in a non-verbal, immediate fashion to their devotees. It is this special relationship between master and devotee which is beautifully captured in the book as whole. Very tastefully done.

Kaleidoscope gives you the full spectrum
Kaliedoscope does the opposing viewpoints journal and essay writing approach very well. The articles are clustered into related fields with well written essays by professionals in the the mix of the issues in education and a few well known voices from the academic researchers to balance it out. The articles all kept me engaged due in part to the volitile nature of of the subjects addressed and the fact that they provoked a strong sense of either agreement of disaproval in either case. This book is a must read for new teachers that are trying to feel out the issues they will be facing in the classrooms and on their school campuses.

A remarkable overview of the mammals
Mammalian diversity - and the remarkable adaptations of living and fossil mammals - are the topic of this updated version of the standard text on mammalian biology. New figures and a completely updated systematic treatment characterize this volume, which should become the standard for professionals and the general public interested in the biology of mammals.

Outstanding Work
Anyone interested in vacuum technology and vacuum pumps would be well advised to read this book -- cover to cover. Topics covered include very basic explainations of the ideal gas laws and their application to vacuum all the way up to complex, but still practial, analysis of the different types of vacuum pumps available and their strengths and weaknesses. While not for the lay person, the book is eminately readable for engineers who have an interest in the subject. The examples are clear and real world, reflecting the authors vast experience in application of vacuum pumps to various chemical processes in industry. A must have for people selling and buying vacuum pumps in any market today.

Couldn't stop reading...Wished there was a book II
The only thing I can say, is that I couldn't put this book down, not even at work during the day..I just had to see what was going to happen next...I was alittle disappointed about the ending.. I wanted "Angele" to face her wrong doers face to face with her husband.. I felt the last chapter was rushed.. I hope there is a part two...Maybe her going back to France with Ryan and getting back what was hers from her uncle....

See The Movie. Get The Book.
I saw the movie & was blown away by it. I wouldn't recommend this book to people who haven't seen the movie or read SPR: THE NOVEL. This book isn't good for people who can't stand seeing gory pictures. Seeing them really brings back memories from the film. The horrors of war can be found in this book, the film, & novel. It also has some of the actor's feelings about the film & what they went through with the making of Saving Private Ryan. GET IT!

Very interesting
Saving Private Ryan and The Triumph and the Glory have sparked an interest in me about WWII. The novel isn't quite as good as the movie but anyway this book is a great behind the scenes look at the making of a terrific movie.

A must for all "Saving Private Ryan" and Tom Hanks fans.
This beautiful coffee-table companion is a must for anyone who has seen, and appreciates, Spielberg's superb film. The book chronicles the making of the movie from boot camp, to the construction of Ramelle, to the actual shoot. The behind the scenes photos and interviews with various actors and crew members only serve to enrich what is a truly amazing film-going experience.

A Great Sub book
This is a great story about the lucky fate of a U.S. Sub trying to "catch" its prize; a Jap Aircraft Carrier that was so big & secret it was not found in their ship's enemy ID book. The book covers both sides of the story. For me, the book was hard to put down. I would buy this book again!

Top notch submarine tale
Originally published under the title "Shinano"

For my money, this is the very best book about US submarines in World War II.

Well researched, it tells the story of the sinking of the Japanese super-carrier Shinano from the viewpoints of both the attacking submarine (USS Archer-fish) and its huge prey, which is desperately trying to avoid any conflict at all during its maiden/shake down voyage.

You are put on the bridges of both vessels - and inside the minds of both commanders - in alternating chapters as the time line of the engagement unfolds. This unique perspective allows the reader to clearly see each move and counter move in a deadly chess match carried out in the ocean south of Tokyo Bay.

Although not delving too deeply into the technical aspects of each vessel's capabilities and tactics, Enright and Ryan are able to give the reader understandable insight into how these capabilities and associated weaknesses constrain and affect the outcome of this contest at each stage of its progress.

But it is the intellectual and emotional aspects of the two combatants that ultimately determines the success and failure on each side. Critical decisions by both parties, which seem logical based upon the assumptions made from their individual perspectives, are seen in the narrative to sometimes be, perceptually and in reality, costly errors of judgement. Some are fatal, some are correctable.

Captain Enright, being the submarine commander, opens his soul to the reader, showing how his previous experiences and failures provided him with the determination to persevere and overcome his doubts and tactical errors while stalking his opponent. It is this perseverence that allows the Archer-fish to doggedly stay on the very ragged edge of pursuit, until finally the Shinao makes a combination of moves that just barely allows Enright to get into the perfect position to make an attack.

On the Japanese side, the authors were able to utilize their extensive research to also "get into the head" of the Shinano's commander (Captain Toshio Abe). Here the pressures of being responsible for the care of Japan's crowning naval achievement, the largest aircraft carrier built during the war, combined with the stress of over three years of continuous tough naval conflict , took their toll. Captain Abe's judgement was understandably clouded by these pressures, and the book clearly describes how key assumptions made by him led to the tactical mistakes that provided the slender opening through which the Archer-fish was able to slip into an attack position. Most critical of these was his steadfast belief that he was beset by an entire "wolfpack" of U.S. submarines. In Abe's haste to escape the dangers he perceived coming from many fronts, he stumbled right into the path of the single Archer-fish.

Neat stuff ! The details make for fascinating reading.

In addition, the book also does an excellent job of addressing the interesting background information concerning the decision to convert the Shinano from a "Yamato" class battle ship to a carrier, and the many hurdles and extreme secrecy associated with her construction.

Also well done is the heart rendering personal accounts of the survivors of the sinking of the Shinano. These sailors exhibit the extreme bravery and concern for humanity in times of disaster that one comes to expect of sailors from any nation.

This book is truly an equisite jewel hidden under an avalanch of submarine related WWII novels and personal accounts. This one is special.

Submarine hunt from both sides
This is an easy-to-read account of the sinking of the supership Shinano, just out of the Tokyo Bay shipyards, in the final days of WWII, by a U.S. submarine. The action goes back-and-forth between the U.S. captain who authored the book, and the Japanese officers, whose accounts he later researched. Learn about the cat-and-mouse game of the submariners' war in this book. Not overly technical, I read it in three days of light reading. Worth your time and your money!
