What a hero!
Gervaise's father wishes that his son will grow up to be a Knight of the White Cross, and so Gervaise leaves his dying mother and travels to Rhodes. When he arrives at Rhodes he never dreams of all the adventures he will be undertaking, and the excitement he will be involved in. First comes the rescuing of Ricord and Santoval, after which the Grand Prior knights Gervaise and his comrade, Ralph, which is a great privilege for the boys. Some time later, after visiting the house of Signor Vsados, Gervaise mentions to Ralph that he did not like the looks of the Greek who had also been at the Vsados household. Ralph laughs at him, but Gervaise's suspicions are aroused even more when he sees the man talking to a slave of the Order. After reporting to Sir John Kendall Gervaise suggests he disguise himself and go among the slaves, to try to find out if a plot is being arranged. What will he find? Gervaise has many more adventures, and also a little romance, for Claudia De Forli bestows her colours on him. Gervaise also sets an example by the boy-galley that he was put in command of. It is the only galley ever to have only young knights appointed to it. In the end Gervaise takes part in the Siege of Rhodes, which was a bloody affair. Don't miss reading this story of a gallant Knight of the White Cross!

The Messianic Character of American Education

Evangelical history of education: philosophical, editorial.
This book is a very complete history of public education in America. It includes biographical sketches of every influential thinker including Europeans who have influenced U.S public education. The author is a theologian as well as a scholar in the field of education. He places education in the United States in the greater context of ancient and medieval educational theory and practice. His insightful philosophical observations in his introductory materials and his epilogical comments are worth the price of the book. Any one taking the standard undergraduate course in "history of education" would greatly profit by using this book as parallel reading. Any one seeking to know why the American public school system, once dominated by Protestant theology and ethics, has become theologically "neutral" and dominated by a humanist theology and ethic should consider Rushdoony's point of view.

The Sociology of Theology
At the bottom of every social system is a religion. Society will work to mirror the theology that underlies it. Rushdoony charts how Western society and the freedom it enjoys (unique in the world) is derived from the creeds and confessions of the early church as they were developed from the Bible. This is a profoundly thought provoking book.

Sadly, Rushdoony makes some odd errors. His recounting of the death of Arius has some factual errors (wrong times, wrong people, etc.). These errors don't change the point of his story, but they show a lack of care that may or may not affect other facts in his book.

Great socio-political work on the creeds of the church
This book masterfully shows how Western liberty is the product of the creeds of the early Christian church. It is a highly original work on which the author evidently spent great time in thought. Highly recommended.

What our children should read in School
This is the type of book that explodes the various humanistic myths that freedom is attained by getting in touch with your inner self, etc.

It is simply the most brilliant book on the history of individual human freedom ever written. For this reason alone, it will survive any future events that may come. Also for that reason alone, it will be hardly read by those in power at the present time. Fortunately, it wasn't written to top the best seller lists, either.

Our call is to victory, not loss
"Thy Kingdom Come" is a wonderful treatise on the call to arms, and that call is not one destined in loss. As Joshua was promised victory in Canaan in the fulfillment of his commission to take the Promised Land, so too we are promised victory in the world in the fulfillment of the Great Commission to create disciples of the nations. We are not told to "give it a try and I'll come back for you when it's too tough," rather "Go, ye therefore (as all power is given unto Jesus) and make disciples of the nations."

Is God's arm too short that He cannot make the mission successful? "Thy Kingdom Come" should serve to harden our wills toward His.

Unvarished Eternal Truths vs. Trendy Church Culture
Rushdoony, with straight-faced and clear-eyed conviction, does what every great teacher should do: Remind of us the obvious. The essence of the book is this: If we do not use God's Law as our rule for existence in every facet of life, then we are using "something else" to guide our lives. If we boil down the message even more, it may be: What exactly are we putting our trust in: God, or Something Else. This book will no doubt be disregarded and ignored by we who prefer to follow "Something Else" instead of God.

Challenging
Most Christian books are fluff. They lack the serious thought that Dr Rushdoony deals with. As a woman this concerns me as I see so few women seeking serious reading material that will challenge and educate. How many have read about the Sociology of the Sabbath? About Restitution? Theology of the State? Debt and Decapitakzation? How about what the Bible says about the Laws of Inheritance? Vows and Oaths? Dr Rushdoony discusses Music and its place in a God centered life. Tithing. So many topics he writes on are never discussed on the Sabbath. How many people know that in centuries past artists, gave notice at the end of their work, "To the Glory of God"? Dr Rushdoony challenges us to become as God would have us be. He challenges parents to take control of the gift called children that G-d has given us. He is a avid home school supporter. If you read any of his works, including The Institute of Biblical Law, you will if G-d led, find yourself changed. One thing Dr Rushdoony does is remind each of us that we belong to G-d. And that we have an obligation to celebrate G-d and how he can lead and strengthen us. This is not easy reading.

Now the negative side (if that is the correct term) which has more to do with the heavy hand view that Christian Reconstructionism seems to take. I personally do not believe that only Christians should be elected to office or that women shouldn't be elected. Since I know non-Christians and women who do a darn good job in secular and public jobs. I do not believe in a theocracy since I am a one G-d believer. But the books he writes should be read, if for no other reason that people should know what he believed.

Much needed revival of true Chriatian scholarship
Get the volumes (a third is now out) and read for yourself. Don't let knee-jerk responses like the reader from Houston, TX (who obviously hasn't read the books)sway you. Rushdoony provides what the modern church scene has not - in depth, well grounded biblical analysis minus the pious gush, end times madness, subjective mysticism and emotional overdosing. His books will not appeal to those with lazy minds not willing to think things through to their logical conclusions. But who cares. There are plenty of books written for that crowd. Rushdoony is for those who are tired of playing church and want to know just how Christian faith works itself out in every area of life.

Chalk another one up for the traditional, non-biblical view!
Ugh! I don't think I have the energy to write another review of books like this that just push traditional opinions rather than honestly and thoroughly examine Scripture.

Please do yourself a great favor; Don't waste your time with this book. Get a copy of Russell Earl Kelly's book, "Should The Church Teach Tithing," or "Beyond Tithes And Offerings," by Michael and Mitchell Webb.

If you don't mind admitting that you are set in your ways and are just looking for titles to agree with your opinion (whether or not they agree with clear Scripture), then buy Gary's book. But if you're a sincere student of the Word of God, I encourage you to get your hands on some real research materials and start doing your homework. In my own studies I was initially shocked to find out how many respected resource works and ministries there are that do not support the concept of tithing money to a local church as being a biblical mandate (including names like Spiros Zodhiates, Richard Lenski, C.I. Scofield, Walter A. Elwell, The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Chuck Swindoll, Charles Ryrie, and tons more!) If you search the Web for my Prayer Shack website or e-mail me, you can read some of my own research in this area.

Tithing money to finance institutionalized churches is absolutely unheard of in the New Testament and the first couple of centuries of church writings. In fact, a few of the early church fathers specifically pointed out that tithing was not to be a guideline to motivate Christian giving. The whole thrust of tithing doctrine gathers its strength from romanistic influence! This is an historical fact! It wasn't until the Roman Emporer Constantine launched his grand religious building schemes that tithing was imposed as a formal requirement. The practice did not become popular in Protestant groups until about 700 years after Calvary!!!

Russell's book will draw attention to historical resources like these and all of his work is documented so that you can follow along and do the research yourself.

Gary is pushing traditional opinion, not engaging a biblical study here. You decide what is important to you.

The tithe belongs to the local church
Gary North makes a strong case from the scriptures that the whole tithe belongs to the local church. North argues that the institution which has a monopoly on the sacraments is the institution that has a monopoly on the tithe, as it was in Abraham's day. The first half of the book makes his case very well. However, the second half of the book is mostly a criticism of R.J. Rushdooney's position that the tithe does'nt necesarily need to go to the local church. I felt that using half of the book to detail this criticism was unnecessary to his arument. I give tha first half of the book 5 stars, but the second half 3 stars. The first half is worth the purchase price and I recommend that you buy it for that.

To Tithe or Not to Tithe, that is the question
OUTSTANDING. Do you go to church, are you a Christian. Save yourself the time of wondering, buy this book. It is great, and will help you to look at the Old Testament as you should as a N.T. Christian. It is totally worth every cent.
