One for the coffee table
I don't normally put my medical textbooks out for display, but I like to use this one as a conversation piece. Each chapter is well reasoned, concise, and suprisingly entertaining. The chapter entitled "Pharmacology of Hetastarch and Pentastarch" had me weeping. Med students - this book will help you fly through boards. Lay people - this book is a suprisingly good read. You know, I don't know this "Ron Faust," but I'm sure we would be instant friends if we ever met. I'd love to share a bottle of courvasier in front of a warm fire and discuss the finer points of anesthesiology with this man. My wife is sick of me talking about him.

A Medical School Must-Have
The Anesthesiology Review is the most comprehensive and informative text for medical students and anesthesiology residents. I am finishing up my third year at Duke Universtiy Medical School. I wish that all my text books were as easy to read and made subjects such as 'automatic internal cardiac defibrillator procedures' interesting.

This book changed my life.
Who said anesthesia textbooks had to put you to sleep? Before I read this book, I thought Succinalcholyne was something you put in your pool. Ron Faust is the Dale Earnhart of modern medicine. "Anesthesioligy Review"? I don't think so. Try "Anesthesiology Bible." Five stars? How bout 10!

Tadpoles: The Biology of Anuran Larvae
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (2000)
Authors: Roy W. McDiarmid and Ronald Altig
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

Great Book for Herpetologists
Knowledge of the often under-studied and overlooked larval stage of the frog- the tadpole- is reviewed excelently in this book. Chapters cover areas from anatomy to ecology.Couldn't recommend this book enough for the herpetologist!

Anuran Tadpoles
This volume provides the "only" comprehensive review of larval anuran biology and behavior that I am aware of. The authors obviously live, think and breath "tadpole". An extremely useful addition to any herpetologists library.

A Book That Will Change Your Life...
This book was a gift to me. Randy Bird is a paraplegic cowboy and now full-time Pastor of Barn Church in Hereford, TX. His story begins w/ an angelic encounter with an old cowboy at the sight of his truck accident. It continues to unfold through his candid yet humorous description during rehabilitation to the priceless moment he sits back on his horse for the first time. Randy is witty and tells a story like only a Texas cowboy can. He's a tough guy but yet so tender spiritually that the transformation from a honky tonk cowboy to one of the most passionate men serving Jesus Christ. This book is a fast read and suitable for all ages. It will truly inspire each person who reads it.

Wonderful Study of Worship
Twenty years ago I studied Hebrew under the teaching of Dr. Ron Allen. His authentic love for the Lord, the language and for the people in his life helped me hear the music of the Psalms and the rest of the Word of God. His teaching and life helped me in my own love and understanding of our Lord and His word. That same authenticity and insight is brought to bear in this book. As a pastor I found the balanced treatment of worship in the church extremely helpful. I found the accuracy of the details and research to be significant in dealing with one's preferences and the preferences of others. It was very affirming in where we are as a church in regard to worship, yet challenging as well. The emphasis is is back to the bible as the source of information. As a person who worships God I found the sensitivity and insights moving in such a way that I can hear the music of the Word of God. I highly recommend this book to all. Thank you to both Dr. Allen and his son.

Fireworks Principles and Practice
Published in Hardcover by Chemical Publishing Company (1998)
Authors: Ronald Lancaster, Roy E.A. Butler, J. Mark Lancaster, and Takeo Shimizu
Amazon base price: $124.00
Average review score:

Broad but shallow. Overpriced.
A very complete coverage of the principles and construction offireworks, but there is very little detail on any particulartype of device. Has good references to other works, and is a good compliment to works that delve deeper into fewer subjects.

Now more than ever the "Bible" of pyrotechnics...
An updated version of a classic work. Builds from the foundation up, enlightening the reader with a well-rounded, solid presentation of the principles behind pyrotechnic compounds and devices, as well as delivering practical methodology for the professional. A must-have for the serious fire-artist.

The home pyrotechnician's bible !
An all-encompassing review of a multitude of pyrotechnic topics. This is an excellent reference manual and an exceptional formula bank, with hundreds of applications, both to the experimenter and the experienced pyrotechnist. Slightly overpriced, but not overvalued, this is a must-have text for anyone even considering beginning a collection of pyrotechnic literature.

Knowledge About Cerebrospinal Fluid Fistula
We have got the textbook and we thought that the book our main anesthesiology resource.

Recently we have a case of cerebrospinal fluid-cutaneous fistula following spinal anesthesia used for indirect inguinal hernia repair. But we couldn't see any comment in the textbook about the management of cerebrospinal fluid fistula from inthratecal space to skin due to postdural puncture for purpose of spinal (intrathecal) anesthesia.

Cutaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula are known to occur rarely under spinal puncture during spinal anesthesia, and CSF leaks via that fistula. This complication is often self-limiting but sometimes needed some treatment procedures such as intravenous fluid restruction, patient prone position, strecth dressing of wound, epidural injection of autologous blood patche or fibrin glue, or uncommonly use of CSF drainage system.

We think that if this complication and its' management is included in new edition of the textbook it will be better.

With our regards,

Hakan Erbay, M.D. Assisstant Professor of Anesthesiology Pamukkale University, Medical Faculty Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Denizli, Turkey

Erkan Tomatir, M.D. Associated Professor of Anesthesiology Pamukkale University, Medical Faculty Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Denizli, Turkey
