Omens in a Dry Season: A Novel of Yosemite

A literary adventure novel in the spirit of Conrad
O'Laughlin has written an extraordinary novel of struggle and heroism--physical, philosophical and spiritual. In a cultural moment generally devoted to posturing and irony, he dares to be earnest about the things that really matter. His characters are compelling, their individual quests have enormous drive, but the book also contains some of the best nature writing in recent memory. O'Laughlin is truly lyrical on the subject of man against rock. This is a great book that also happens to be a great read.

A small opinion...
I have never been to Yosemite and, though I should maybe feel a bit deprived :), I also feel a strange reluctance to go there now. "Omens" conjures up such a beautiful and mysterious place in my mind that I worry that the reality might not live up or that I wouldn't [or both:)]. And I would be sad too, I believe, to find no Malone waiting there or Hummingbird Hayes or Alex or Angel or Geronimo. Through the story I found myself wanting to help Malone both to forgive himself and to find everything he was looking for in Yosemite and to be saved. This was the subtle power of Michael O' Laughlin's writing. He is able to recreate a landscape beautiful and alive, to introduce the reader to characters who they are able to care about, and to simultaneously move beyond this to less concrete territory- the stuff of myths. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It works like legends do while still remaining beautifully rooted in the real world.

Voyage into nature
Michael O'Laughlin has created a visceral trip into nature. I was taken into the heart of a great climber of the early 70's. Through O'Laughlin's precise perception, I traveled into the depths of the Merced River at spring flood, into a cave behind Yosemite Falls, out to the edge of space at the heights of Yosemite's granite walls. This is a very short list of what O'Laughlin made me feel through his evoking of the setting. This novel is magical, mystical, and somehow penetrates the essense of what places like Yosemite can be for people who love nature. At the same time, I would describe the novel as profoundly realistic. O'Laughlin creates a world on the boundary between myth and reality, achieving an amazing balance. He writes with profound detail, capturing the power in nature to manifest human rebirth. This is a novel for any lover of the outdoors and all who appreciate the detailed prose that draws one away from oneself and into a very pleasurable fictional world. Highly moving material. Highly recommended.

A warm and personal look into the lives of Roy and Dale.
This is a wonderful, warm and personal look into the lives of Roy Rogers, the King of the Cowboys and Dale Evans Rogers, the Queen of the West. This book gives the stories of Roy's life from his humble beginnings in Duck Run, Ohio and Dale's start in Uvalde, Texas to their present lives in Apple Valley, California. The stories of their joys and hardships are very touching. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is fan of Roy or Dale as well as anyone who wants to read an inspiring story about the Hollywood couple who are heros in real life just as they were in the movies. The only suggestion I would have for the next edition of this book is that it needs an index. The stories are so wonderful you'll be wanting to see more photos and hear more of Roy and Dales personal stories

A delightful book about Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.
This book is a MUST for anyone who is a fan of Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and Trigger of course! Only three things could make this book better; An index would be a nice addition, MORE of Roy and Dale's own stories about their lives and lots more pictures

This Is A Must
The issuing of BSH is a landmark event. The book contains demonstrations of what the botanicals people consume in their health food products really mean while alerting those in the industry to the issues surrounding their use. This book should be recognized formally by the government. The labeling recommendations presented are meaningful, complete and based on the best of science.

If you are a consumer of supplements, or, more importantly, if you are in the business (whether you are a retailer, a broker a a seller of raw materials) this book is a complete reference that must sit on the shelf only occasionally. Otherwise it should be in your hands for consult.

Excellent Book!
I have this book and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to have a key reference to using herbal products safely. It is not the only reference book I consult when looking up the safety of herbal products, but it is one of my main ones. I simply wouldn't think of being without it.

I congratulate the American Herbal Products Association for publishing this book and being on the forefront of wanting consumers to have access to accurate information about the safety of herbs when looking to purchase Herbal Products.

Useful for Contact Info
I bought this book simply for the list of potential employers it contains and found it to be a great resource for browsing employers in different categories. It contains web addresses, street addresses, short descriptions of what the company does, and all the companies are divided into different categories such as "Accounting and Management Consulting" or "Real Estate".

The only part that I found to be a joke is at the very beginning, concerning how to conduct a job search. The instructions are so general that they are useless and the cover letter and resume examples are only mildly useful. More importantly, information like that is already readily available in better and more detailed format on the internet, so they could really have just saved some paper and left this part out.

The bottom line is that this book is a crucial reference guide for companies you could be applying to that you didn't even know existed until you got this book. Since it narrows things down to one metropolitan area instead of a region or the nation as a whole, it allows the author to list even more employers for this specific city and with even more detail.

A must have if you are doing a focused job search!

Exploring Fractals on the Macintosh
Excellent Introduction! If you only have time or inclination enough to read one book, and want either enough information to satisfy mild curiosity or to provide a jumping off point for further exploration, this is the book to start with. An excellent work offering a brief survey of the field of chaos and fractals, almost every page offers something new and interesting to the reader, whether or not the preceeding pages have already been read. Included are a list of quotes, an analysis of the research being done on chaos in various fields, and a list of fields that the study of chaos impacts.

Finally a good Lichtenstein analysis
One of only a very few books on Roy Lichtenstein available is fortunately a very good one indeed. Includes an analysis of his work, his sources and influences, and his influence on contemporary art. Illustrations include some of the source material for his most recognized paintings. Smart, sensible, accessible, and attractive.

I Been Here Before I Lighted Out For The Territories
This volume of effervescence gives off more sparks than a campfire from "Roughing It". It also provides terrific context for a group of essays by Shelly Fisher Fishkin "Lighting Out for the Territories". For real fun read David Carkeet's modern recreation of Twain "I Been Here Before", a book Twain would have somehow wished to be included in his canon. Don't be surprised if someday Carkeet's book is included as a companion volume to the Oxford Mark Twain.

Understanding the "Science" in Political Science
Microcase's workbook explains, in simple terms, how political scientists use statistics and the scientific method to explain political and social phenomena. The workbook in itself is a terrific accomplishment. The hands-on exercises, however, are what really bring the concepts home to the reader/student. Using real social and political data, Microcase leads the user through real statistical explorations. It's a great tool for teaching, makes a good independent-study course, and would be an excellent way to learn a little about the "science" in poli sci on one's own.

Tailored to students in business and management.
As someone who works privately with dissertation students, I recommend this book. When students in the business and management contact me, I recommend that they use this book as reference. The authors anticipate and answer many of the questions that students have about dissertations in business and management.
