"Geek Proof" prepares Christian teens for tough questions
"Geek Proof Your Faith" is a great book designed for equipping teens with the information they need to handle tough questions about their faith. Johnson and Ross do an excellent job of tackling tough contemporary issues by providing real life examples, Biblical reasons for why we believe what we do and sound (and realistic) suggestions for how teens can stand their ground and defend their faith. What I like most about this book is that it encourages teens to not be swayed in their faith, but to stand firm and confident in their beliefs.

Great way to firm up your faith
This book is very helpful for defending your faith in various areas, including abortion, evolution, reliability of the Bible, and more. It is easy to understand, and the issues talked about in it are pertinent to teenagers' lives. Biblical references and dozens of suggested books covering the same topics round out this excellent resource.

A great resource by a real M.D.
Michael Ross' book is a comprehensive and well thought out book with practical applications to real issues encountered in training. This book is a must-have for any competetive or committed cyclist, runner or skater. The subjects are also applicable for other athletes, providing useful information regarding common medical problems and situations encountered with physical activity.

Dr. Ross' witty prose makes this book easy to read as well as helpful...He is well versed and knowledgeable about this very important subject.

I look forward to Dr. Ross' next installment!

Maximum Performance by Michael Ross
Maximum performance by Michael Ross is one of the best books on the topic of sports medicine for endurance athletes, especially cyclists. What makes the book an invaluable resource for athletes is its foundation in evidence-based medical research. (Dr. Ross lists complete references with every chapter.) Dr. Ross has a way of synthesizing the research into a practical format which non-medical readers can easily digest, comprehend, and apply to their exercise routines. The cycling world should welcome this book to their libraries as a standard essential text and await further work from Dr. Ross.

Rhetoric Versus Reality: What We Know and What We Need to Know About Vouchers and Charter Schools
Published in Unknown Binding by Rand Corp (E) (2001)
Authors: Brian P. Gill, Michael P. Timpane, Karen E. Ross, and dom Brewer
Amazon base price: $15.00
Average review score:

Thought Provoking if one is willing to think.
This book reviews the evidence about so-called "choice" models of education or "free market" models and their impact on education. In the end the evidence shows nothing, but it doesn't refute anything either. What Gill shows us pretty convincingly is that, at the moment anyway, this is a debate driven by ideology rather than by evidence. No matter on which side one falls, one can interpret the evidence based upon their perspective, since the evidence is inconclusive. Like so many other debates in our society we have to move beyond the "classroom effects" and investigate what the proponents or opponents really have as their agenda. This is an excellent book simply because it is one of the first systemic reviews of the evidence as opposed to the ideological journalism with which we are most often confronted. No matter one's perspective, this book is worth reading, because it will alternately challenge and support one's views.

Covers almost every aspect of this critical issue
Collaboratively written by Brian P. Gill, P. Michael Timpane, Karen E. Ross, and Dominic J. Brewer, Rhetoric Versus Reality: What We Know And What We Need To Know About Vouchers And Charter Schools is a straight-on, analytical, thoroughly serious study on the politically hot issue of school vouchers and charter schools in America today. From examples of voucher and charter systems currently in practice, to their effectiveness on academic achievement and existing empirical evidence on the results of school choice and more, Rhetoric Versus Reality covers almost every aspect of this critical issue in a dispassionate, fact-filled and thorough manner. This is highly recommended reading for parents, educators, and lawmakers wanting to learn more about these complex and heavily debated options for America's school systems.

A great cure for insomnia
At $42.00 this book should at least be hardcover! The overloaded student who has to pay for this tome should be sympathised with. A surefire cure for the insomniac, political science curriculum overviewers should find a different book with the same info. The book costs more than the course I'm taking and judging from the disbeleif on my fellow colleagues faces at the college bookstore, I'm not the only one with this complaint. All this aside, my teachers copy was very informative!!! PS can anyone lend me this book for nine weeks?

Review
Death Has Deep Roots (1951) is a classic of the courtroom drama-a tense and gripping thriller with excellent characterisation and an ingenious plot.

Victoria Lamartine is on trial for the murder of her supposed lover, Major Eric Thoseby, whom she is accused of having stabbed one night in March. It seems to the police and the prosecution a 'sealed box' mystery, for there are only five suspects: three hotel staff-members, and two guests, so that one of them must have done it-and Mlle. Lamartine the likeliest suspect. However, as Macrea, counsel for the defence, proves, "the whole thing [is] like a jigsaw puzzle which has been half done by an inexpert child. Any bit that seems to fit has been left in. Any bit that doesn't fit has been disregarded." All of the suspects have connections to either the French Underworld or Underground, so that, although this is a murder committed in England, it is in fact "the murder of a man who had done most of his war service in France, by a French girl, whom he was alleged to have met in France, in a hotel kept by a Frenchman with an Italian waiter who had spent all of his war service in France."

It is in France that the deep roots lie-the deep roots which must be uncovered to expose the dirty truth. It is amongst "the hate and the fear, the hysterics and the exaggeration and the heroism" of occupied France-"an unknown and rather frightening landscape ... where it might be necessary-where it might be most necessary and desirable-to be able to kill yourself quickly" that the pasts of Major Thoseby, of Victoria Lamartine, and of M. Sainte the hotel manager lie. It is in France that "forces [are] at work, forces which ... had already reached out and touched [Nap] at the extremities of their huge, opposed organisations"-gold smugglers and the Sûreté. And it is in post-war France-a country which "is not a very happy one at this moment", as Gilbert vividly depicts-that Nap Rumbold, the lawyer for the defence who appeared in other Gilbert novels, "fight[ing] a long, dirty, blackguarding campaign in which we shall use every subterfuge that the Law allows, and perhaps even a few that it doesn't", searches for the truth, his efforts alternating with scenes of the courtroom drama. These thriller elements are well used, and do not stick out like a chewed-off ear. Although Nap complains that "[American magazines] have one habit that I find irritating. They start a story, get you really interested in it, and then-what happens? You turn the page and find you are in the middle of quite a different one... That's exactly what's happening here, don't you see? I started out reading a murder mystery. It seems to have turned into a gold smuggling melodrama. What's the connection between the death of Major Thoseby last March in the Family Hotel and a large-scale gold smuggling racket?", it soon becomes clear that all the elements tie neatly together, forming a cohesive and extremely satisfactory whole, in this, one of the classic post-war detective stories.

Faith Encounter - Devotional Study of the Gospels
Even though it is written as a youth devotional study of the life of Christ; Faith Encounter is a tremendous devotion for anyone who is new to Christianity or who is looking for practical application of the teachings of the Gospels. Its 84 devotions (12 weeks of daily readings) walk through the life of Christ from prophecy to resurrection. Each devotion includes a scripture reading from the 4 Gospels, an explanation of the reading including modern examples, and one or more application areas where the scripture applies to today's life.

Each week of 7 devotions pursues a new theme through Christ's life: Ultimate Life!, Ultimate Relationship!, Ultimate Truth!, Ultimate Wisdom, Ultimate Commitment!, Ultimate Freedom!, Ultimate Shepherd!, Ultimate Love!, Ultimate Readiness!, Ultimate Mission!, Ultimate Payment!, and Ultimate Triumph.

Faith Encounter is written with a style that is easy to read. The authors use language that is familiar to today's youth and keep each lesson to the point. I would expect the average youth would be able to complete the scripture reading and devotional text in a 15-20 minutes. The applications found in each devotion are clearly stated and are easy to grasp and apply on a daily basis.

Although it was written as a devotional, the clear organization and pace make it ideal as a primary resource for group Bible study as well. It would be easy to complete 2 or more days in a 30-60 minute study period.
