For all Marxists, and most non-Marxists, this book is simply unique. Professors Ross and Trachte have designed a framework accounting for the change in the class balance of power resulting from the globalization of capital. They then apply this framework to three case studies, thereby showing how the owners of capital have become stronger vis a vis the state and labour, with the result being an intensification of class struggle on a global scale, resulting in the rollback of many of the gains made by the working class earlier on in this century, (such as the welfare state, minimum wage laws, etc..) They also explain why earlier theories, (monopoly capitalism and world systems,) are inadequate insofar as explaining the global economy of the 1990's is concerned. Their own theory of global capitalism, on the other hand, does this brilliantly; for anyone who wishes to understand the fundamentals of the international economy, this book is invaluable.

I read this to my second grade class and they loved it! Several students now want to be an author when they grow up. The students will ask me at least once a week to read it to them. They think it is really spooky! We all got that "googery boogery creepy crawly catchy feeling" while reading it!

A most remarkable and absorbing artbook reflecting the dual love of the written word and the crafted picture, Rockwell Kent is commended to the attention of bibliophiles and art historians.

I think this book could help any child who has lost a loved one. It shows how the family is knit together, not only those now living, but generations that have gone before. I would suggest it as a book to read aloud to kids if a grandparent or other elderly friend is nearing the end. It might help them to be read the book and get a chance to discuss it with the reader.

Unfortunately, I must differ with the praise this book has received. For starters, even though the book covers over a year and a half, Andre doesn't grow and his hair remains nicely cut (Notice that his short pants in the beginning are the same short pants in the end) Even though the book mentions that he snuck scraps of food and water from the kitchen, it's hard to believe the author doesn't mention how hungry he must have been (Boys this age are constantly eating). And he looks so clean when he is found out, how does he do that? Where did he go to the bathroom? And then there's the unbelievable heroics - give me a break!! Realistic fiction for children, no matter the reading level, must be accurately told in both words and pictures. In this case the book fails on both counts.

Will Andre and the statue make it to America together? Read this book and find out. My kids loved it. We highly recommend it
