This book is one of the best books on investing I've read yet. It does not give you chart patterns and indicators, but it shows you how the great ones made their fortunes. As I said, "They are legends for a reason."--They set a standard for investors. A definate read.

I have to admire any investment author who starts with the premise that the past is just as worthy of study as the future. We are fortunate to have among us, though not for much longer, a number of living legends in the world of finance -- Fisher, Templeton, Buffett, Tisch and others -- who will one day take their habits, idiosyncracies, and wealth-building secrets to the grave. When they are gone, there will be no one to take their places, or enrich us with their wisdom.

For years, we have been deluged with repetitive texts on how to become a millionaire like your neighbor. Isn't it better to have a manual on how to emulate the titans? There's an old saying in the school yard that if you are going to cheat on an exam, copy off the person who gets the A+, not the C students. Nikki Ross' book has been sorely needed and will prove just as pertinent today as it will in 20 years -- when the memories of these legends grow more faint.

What I liked most about Nikki's work is its translation value -- her ability to condense the lingering, sometimes philosophical synapses of these great men into lingo that lay investors can use practically. She avoids the temptation of delving at length into their biographies (which are rich enough and worthy of a sequel) and instead presents us with step-by-step instructions (almost as if she was taking dictation from Fisher and Buffett themselves).

A savvy stock-picker will quickly pick out the common threads that run throughout the book. All of these titans boiled down investing to a few core principles:

1) They view stocks as pieces of businesses and put all their efforts into determining the value of their prospective purchases. 2) They focus on price but understand that the real value of an investment is procured over time as the company grows. 3) They shun convention and believe today's dissertations on portfolio modeling are recipes for mediocrity. 4) They don't give a hoot about day-to-day fluctuations in the stock market. 5) They are all humble men who delighted in increasing clients' net worth just for the sake of proving it was possible.

It helps that Ms. Ross is a certified financial planner and a columnist. Her experience in giving real-world advice to individual investors lent itself to an easy-to-read, well planned book that any investor -- sophisticated or otherwise -- can use to their advantage. This book successfully bridges the gap between stock-picking and financial planning without coming off as self-serving, as many financial planning books are.

Nikki Ross presents a common sense three-step approach to investing. This approach is based on applying time-tested strategies that five successful giants have applied. Their experience through market crashes and the market highs demonstrate that their strategies are time-less and will be as valuable tomorrow as they were yesterday.

The first step is gathering the information. She shows where the information can be gathered using Internet resources (over twenty-five are listed), SEC reports, annual reports, magazines, and newspapers.

The second step is the evaluation process. Here she brings to life some of the insightful questions applied by Warren Buffett, Benjamin Graham, Phil Fisher, T.Rowe Price, and John Templeton. The quantitative aspects of the evaluation are addressed (such as the company's sales, profit margins, and earnings). In addition the qualitative aspects (the company management's abilities, products and policies, market position, and company life cycle) become part of the investigation that leads to the third step, making a decision. In reading Nikki Ross' "Lessons from the Legends of Wall Street" I found questions of these legends most valuable and applicable in the evaluation of my own portfolio.

The third step, making the decision, requires that the investment meet a personal set of criteria before making a purchase. This also would be applied when making the decision to hold or sell the investment.

Nikki Ross presents these same strategies of the legends (that are used even today by mutual fund managers, money managers, and investment counselors) in an useable format that can be applied by the reader. In comparison to some other investment type books, this one cuts through the complex theory and offers common sense strategies for investing.

This interesting book is well written and timely. I would recommend this book for reading to help develop a solid investment strategy.

This is an excellent reference book for any of the types of printmaking methods out there. I'll be student teaching next semester, and I'm definately taking this book for my inclass library!

Perhaps the current art market is not so preoccupied with the fine art of printmaking that thrived in the 1980s and 1990s, but the democratization of making available works by artists best known for their unique art will always have a justifuable niche among art collectors of all strata. This well written and well illustrated volume about the various forms of print making is as fine as they come. Though centuries old as an art form, "prints" are still looked at as "copies" by the neophytes. The differences and techniques of etchings, lithographs, sereigraphs, etc are all discussed with great facility. The examples are very fine. This should be not only in every art school library, but also in the librairies of fine art collectors who want to really understand what Fine Print Making is all about.

Okay, well, maybe I'm a little passionate about the things I like, but I'm a Leo and that should be expected. I borrowed this book today from my AP Art teacher, my budding interest in printmaking beginning to develop, and I'm floored by the thorough descriptions of so many different printmaking processes. As printmaking is such a broad art form, I had never found a book that satisfies my desires to learn about intaglio, woodcut, monotype, screenprinting and book arts (including a few pages on letterpress printing!), let alone all the other printmaking forms. Highly recommended for anyone in search of a Printmaking Bible.

read one of the short pieces in this anthology. They are also incredibly uplifting too. A brilliant bedside companion for any dog lover.

Although each of the pieces in this book was inspired by the loss of a much beloved dog, this is really a book about vibrant, fully-alive dogs: family pets, fellow hunters, soul mates, and best friends. And while none of the dogs remembered so fondly here still lives, Old Dogs affirms the remarkably special place in the heart we reserve for our dogs. My own dog is sturdy in her middle-age, but reading the eulogies and odes in this moving anthology has made me appreciate more all the quirky habits I take for granted, like how she can't resist running off with one of my Reeboks when I'm shoeing up for our evening walk--the little prance she performs when I tell her, "Bring the shoe back!" Not a sad read but a celebratory one, required for every dog owner!

This is a remarkable anthology of stories and poems by outstanding authors of the past, as well as more recent times. Although these moving remembrances are only of beloved dogs, the lovers of any species of pet will find identical sentiments for their own losses. Whatever kind of companion animal you had, you will find your own bereavement and healing tears reflected here, as well.

Care was taken to avoid over-sentimentality, in this assortment of loving reflections of dogs, celebrated here. These accounts are full of love, and are sometimes even funny - and we are thrust into the realization that perhaps that is the most wonderful kind of living memorials we can have for a beloved pet. Too often, we lose this perspective, while trying to keep from drowning in our own bereavement and sorrows.

Rather than being a collection of sad literary memorials Old Dogs Remembered is a joyful celebration of life with pets. This inspires healthy new points of view and adjustments to moving on into our new lives, without them.

Here we are treated to many different outlooks on how they permanently enriched the lives of their owners. Reading these heartwarming pages will broaden the understanding of each reader, concerning his/her own personal bereavement. Here, we are offered the collective wisdom of others, who reminisce on their honored pets. There is much to be shared and learned here, as well as enjoyed.

With so many different authors, one must appreciate that references and styles have changed drastically, through the ages. As an example of this, some might find the essay by the dramatist John Galsworthy to be interesting, but a bit troublesome to read. And, as with any anthology, there may be some accounts not everyone would appreciate. But all pet lovers will readily identify with the overall shared remembrances, here. This is a heartwarming collection, which can be enjoyed comfortably, in several installments.

There will be many an uplifting tear shed in its reading, and we suggest it for your reading pleasure.

"war on terror," "pre-emptive war," "Anthrax," "Blowback," are some of the frequently used words by the trigger happy mullahs in washington. This book aims to illustarte the meaning behind these words. We saw how masterfully the words "Weopons of Mass destruction" were used to justify the occupation of Iraq by the Anglo-American forces. Now it is plain that all these false claims were used to woo the US public. Words such as these are being used by the bush admisnitration and the pentagon as simply and most centainly effectively as "Weopons of mass deception". This book tries to create an informed public by dissecting the rhetoric of the war mongers to create an informed public receptive to reason rather than fear.

We live in an age where words like "invasion" and "pre-emptive war" are being bandied about in a frighteningly common-sensical manner. At a time when the US government seems to be set on embarking on a war that has faced consistent opposition, it has becomingly increasingly urgent for all of us to start questioning the nature of this common-sense: why has it become acceptable for policy-makers and media persons to talk about "attacks" and "regime-change" openly as a strategy to create a new world order; how "new" is this form of creating a world order; and what is the nature of the order that is being constructed? John Collins and Ross Glover's edited volume goes a long way in helping address these extremely important questions.
To say that the volume is timely is to state the obvious. What makes it invaluable is that the collection of essays attempts to historicize and bring to light the manner in which political contexts cannot be separated from what pass for rhetorical common-sense. Terms like "terrorism," "vital interests," and "fundamentalism" do not emerge in a vacuum. Understanding their meaning involves a closer look at the political context and the struggles within which they emerge. Collins and Glover have done a remarkable job of putting together a collection that does precisely that. Bypassing academic jargon, the authors have succeeded in making complex arguments accessible to a wide array of people. Collins' essay on "Terrorism" for instance, carefully takes the reader through the historical evolution of the term and the various meanings that have been associated with it during the three decades that it has been critical to US foreign policy. The essays on the concepts of Laura J. Riediehs) and "Civilization versus Barbarianism" (Marina A. Llorente) carefully delineate the manner in which concepts that are supposed to be universal and abstract, with meanings that supposedly make sense to one and all, are constructed in the context of political struggles. I could carefully go through each essay in the collection, but that might involved getting repetitive about what makes this collection so important. To put it in a nutshell, each essay in the volume is an excellent example of what political committed scholarship ought to look like. We live in a world where it is has become urgent for us to understand the dynamic and politically charged nature of the terms that are being used to construct a new world order. Collateral Language is a critical tool that needs to be used in this endeavor. The editing of the volume and its general tenor also make it a great text-book for any undergraduate course or high-school course- be it in Political Science, History or Cultural Studies. This book is a great and necessary read for anyone interested in contemporary politics.

WW II led to a couple of interesting works on propaganda: not
how to make your own, but how to recognise it, and how to avoid being taken in by it. In wartime we are perhaps as much in danger of propaganda and manipulation of information from our own governments, as from any other government. George Orwell wrote on how language is manipulated, in 1984 and Animal Farm. Less well known is Thouless "Clear thinking in wartime", with sections on such old favourites as propaganda speeches, and atrocity stories. Thouless' aim was to de-bunk the persuasive-sounding words, and get the reader asking how much hard fact lay behind them. Often, not much.
This new book, edited by Collins and Glover, should make interesting reading. As the generation who remember WWII are dying out, we are losing our knowledge on how to defend ourselves against propaganda. This leaves each citizen at the mercy of an enemy, and also at the mercy of their own govenment. All the war-mongers need to do is roll out a few old tricks, and people will fall for them, just like they did 60 years ago. We badly need books like this one, to help us think clearly in the coming months.
Some will doubtless say books like these are "un-patriotic", or "damage the war effort" or "put our troops in danger" . All that will show is that the propagandists have already started - such words make reading books like these more essential, not less.

I loved the book and all the facts about Diana Ross? It showed me that if you are coming from a not so wealthy background,and you can still make something out of your life when you are odler.

There was a time that J. Randy was a freind of the diva Miss Ross. I guess he was her Linda Tripp! Since she did find out that he was writing a book about her,without telling her, I think confidences shared would be expected to be kept silent. After all, he was the president of the Supremes fan club, and had access to Diana, THE GIRLS, and the people at Motown.I think a more balanced account of her life and the MYTHS surrounding her is to be found in a chapter of a new book called "DIVAS". Anyone interested in anather slant on The Supremes and Diana should read "ALL THAT GLITTERS". Iam a big fan-I try to be objective, but Diana has gotten a bad rap, especially since 1985. Get the "DIVAS" book for a really more balanced viewpoint of the star and the myths surrounding her life. The music still stands!

I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in Diana Ross. It was very informational and inspirational. Great Book!!!

You will never get tired reading the stories or watching the photo's time after time. So if you are not so fortunate to travel the world, this book comes close to the real thing. Buy it!!

Let me make one thing perfectly clear: This book is a companion volume to GURPS Magic. In order to fully appreciate (and make the best use of) this book, you need GURPS Magic as well. Now that that is out of the way, on to the praises. This is where you will find the odder and more esoteric spells (as well as some of the more powerful ones) that Magic just didn't have room for, or that handn't been thought of yet. Some of these spells are exceptionally powerful, others are just plain sneaky, but all are useful. As I said before, the odder corners and more advanced levels of magic are more fully represented in this book, along with optional rules. Here you will find things like techno-magic, radiation spells, acid spells, spells to literally rain fire down upon your foes, a spells to create an imprisoning circle around your foes, spells to fascinate and control your enemy, and even a spell to plunge them into a morass of incapacitating pleasure. That little list only scratches the surface, my friends. Almost every school of magic in the GURPS system has additions in this book, and all of them are worth looking at. If you want to be the best magic-user that you can be, this book will help you on your way.

Used with GURPS Magic and the GURPS Basic Set it provides a complete, varied and well integrated set of spells for roleplaying. Without being tied to specific genres it still manages to offer a wide range of dramatic possibilies from which many a plot could be spawned.

John Ross provides an amazingly well researched and extensive recent history of chiapas. An encyclopedia to the Post Uprising History of Chiapas.

I met John a few years when he'd just publish "The Annexation of Mexico." To me, this was essential to understand this crazy, amiable gringo who was so interested in Mexico and loved it so much. Now I know. Hats off for John!! Since the Zapatista uprising many lines have been written on Chiapas. Essays, criticisms, pseudo-investigative reports, and many more were produced by Mexican, US, French writers. I dare say that, at least, compared to all non-Mexican recounts of the uprising timeline, Ross' is the best. Plenty of information, witty storytelling, tongue-in- cheek analysis of the corrupt political arena and its US counterpart (accomplices that is). Ross shuts up all potential (cynical) critics of his pro- Zapatista point of view by putting the uprising on a Mexican History perspective. If you want to know more about Chiapas, beyond the mainstream media blackout, this IS the book. You will understand why the antiglobalization protests perhaps have their roots in that Jan. 1, 1994.

This book is full of great ideas and concepts. I purchased the title based on average customer review, and really grasped the concepts within. However, once I finally got my dog, I quickly learned that many of the things the book takes for granted lead to much frustration on your part. Dogs don't just sit in front of you, though that's one of the big points the book relies on. Dogs won't just stand next to you, no matter how hard you make them try. Pick up the book if you want a nice read, and want to have some great concepts, but take the time to follow-up the book with some hardcore, professional obedience training. Doing it yourself will result in hours of frustration, and an unruly pet.

As a fellow author and dog trainer, I can highly recommend this title as one of the best presentations of an "all-breed" basic training program that I've read. John Ross stresses the importance of understanding the world from your dog's point of view (which I highly agree with). The ability to "read your dog" and communicate with him effectively is, after all, a key element to successful training.

Ross also presents a well balanced approach, free from the ineffective gimmicks and "quick fixes" so commonly heralded in many training books today. You wont find "purely positive" nor correction/aversion based methods blindly recommended here... but instead an intelligent approach based on conditioned responses, and an understanding of natural canine behavior.

If you want to establish an enjoyable, life long relationship with your dog... then "Dog Talk" is a book you should not be without! I wish more instructors of basic manners obedience classes would follow the "Dog Talk" training program; if they did, the result would surely be many more happy owners with well mannered canine companions.

John Ross is vastly under-rated and under-cited; at least it seems that way with other trainers I've spoken with on the East Coast of the USA. This book provided the foundation for my training with my first dog that has led to my entry into professional dog training. While many people looking for house manners for their puppies seem to turn to the Monks of New Skete book, a fine work in its own rite, those who I encounter who chose *Dog Talk* typically seem to have better working relationships with their dogs.

Perhaps it is his clear, concise, and straightforward method that makes the difference. Not only does he talk about his successes in dog training, he offers examples of his own failures in dog training to clearly demonstate to the reader better methods that he acquired as a result. Personally, I like to learn from someone who is likewise interested in learning, as well--I tend to be wary of those who seem to have never made mistakes.

Not only does he get a dog owner through the basics of house manners, he includes solid instructions for expanding into a working relationship with a canine, and that includes a few fun tricks.

This book is divided into two sections--the white section includes general stories, and anecdotally describes how to speak to your dog on a level he understands. In the central grey section he tells, step-by-step, how to train a particular behaviour (e.g., "Sit," "Stay," etc.), what to expect as your dog begins to learn, and how to address specific problems as they arise in the training process. He doesn't expect one to read his mind when he describes a process--he gives one all the necessary information, including photographs, so one will know if one is going about something the right way.

The only potential drawback to this book is that he does incorporate a traditional dog training collar in some exercises. I contend, however, that if one has firmly followed his instructions on how to engage a dog--in language the dog understands--one will find that the dog performs such that corrections are not necessary. This is especially true if you begin work with a puppy (a dog under the age of two).

If all humans engaged their new pups in *Dog Talk* from the day they brought them home, the dog shelters/dog pounds would no longer be over-flowing with discarded pets, and there would be virtually no such thing as a "bad" dog anymore.

This book really is just that good.
