a true genius
Vintage Erickson
Sidney Rosen has done a masterful job conveying the therapeutic tales of a master hypnotist. Erickson comes alive, and the reader gets a first-hand experience of Erickson's use of conversational therapeutic metaphors. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Erickson's novel approach to clinical work.
stories that heal
This is a great collection of stories that erickson tells his students to teach them about hypnosis. It's amusing and great to have in learning about how stories can be therapeutic. You can even analyze his stories and model from them to create your own stories. there is so many resources you can find by looking at each stories from different perspectives. the cool thing is that you can see how erickson tell stories from his mind view.

Pythagorean Magic! Yea!
I, for one, thought that this book was an awesome literary accomplishment, and for a historical biography, it was very interesting. What fascinated me the most about Galileo was his excitement for learning new things. As a boy his father, Vincezio Galilei, often told Galileo to think for himself. He told him that even if a person says something popular, it may not always be accurate. Even a person such as Aristotle could be corrected. Although this is true and is the basis of Galileo's life, the title of the book is referring to the Pythagorean Theorem. This was the very first thing taught to Galileo on his first day in a private noble school. What happens is the teacher calls Galileo to sit on the floor with him. He then takes out a multitude of pebbles from his pocket. He lays three pebbles on the floor in the shape of a triangle. He then points out that it is an isosceles triangle, because all of the sides are congruent. It fascinates young Galileo even more to learn that when more pebbles are placed at the base of the triangle, something happens. He sees a pattern happening with the sum of two sides. They seemed to be equal with the hypotenuse of the triangle. This, he learned, is what is known as the Pythagorean Theorem, or as his teacher called it, the Pythagorean Number Magic. It is most popular throughout the book, because it is the first thing that starts the most famous Philosopher in the world, Galileo Galilei, wanting to learn.

This is a very enjoyable book, more History than Mystery.
Dorothy & Sidney Rosen's "Death & Blintzes" is a loving and very entertaining look at a specific place and time: West Boston, 1936, where somewhat-Americanized Jewish immigrants nervously explore a great new world. Sometimes it's the best of everything--great "nosherai" and fabulous movie stars--and sometimes it's a little frightening, as when a worker can lose a non-Union job through no fault of her own. Garment worker/detective Belle Appleman is a 36-year-old widow who enjoys her world but treats it with appropriate caution. When a fellow factory worker is killed, who but Belle would have the chutzpah to "help" the Boston Police Department find the murderer? This book is soft-boiled in the best sense of the word, although sex and violence are both treated in a matter-of-fact way. The novel's strength is in its honesty to a time and place which may well be forgotten by the time the next generation of American Jews comes of age.
Welcome to the Family, Mrs. Appleman
As the husband and father of two of your authors (Alicia Appleman-Jurman and Daniel Appleman), I welcome the addition of the first fictional character to our family. Belle Appleman reads like the kind of person who would fit right in with the rest of us Jewish Applemans. She thinks for herself, has an inquiring mind and a lot of Khutzpah. I couldn't put the book down...as a purely mystery story it is good, but there are better. As a character study, more typical of her generation than many might admit, Belle seems to me typical of the great majority of the wave of Jewish immigration preceeding and immediately after the first World War who threw aside their European traditions..she wanted to become an American and lead a normal life, even if, in her case, this included becoming an amateur detective. An event that had a significant impact on the development of his skills occurred when he was a teenager and became paralyzed for a time, unable to move anything except his eyes. During this time, in order to avoid extreme boredom, he studied the most minute details of the body language and speech patterns of the people around him. This led him to a deep understanding of how unconscious processes affect behavior, and how change almost always occurs at the unconscious or subconscious level.
The reader should take particular note of the anecdotes involving his own children, which indicate that like Erickson, they turned out to be remarkable individuals. Some of the anecdotes that involve how he dealt with his own children's behavior illustrate what a remarkable parent he was, and how being such a parent does in fact produce amazing children. For example, it is discussed in the book how it was only necessary to discipline one of his daughters three times in her life.
This book is required reading for any psychologist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, hypnotist, parent, or anyone who has an interest in human behavior and the most effective way to institute change in such behavior.
