I read this book in 5th grade and loved it
This is a great childrens book, very imaginative. I enjoyed the story about the dragon keeper and his children haveing to go and live with the dragon. This book was the first dragon book i'd ever read and ever since i've been in love with dragons. When ever I think of dragon ranks for books I think blackto be most powerful and evil, red, medium power level and then the green one or blue i can't remember was the weakest and a runt.

a really great book
I read this book in a library several years ago and I loved it. It's about three children trying to save a dragon's egg. The dragon had been the protector of the city that the children lived in, and the people would pay taxes of gold (for its hoard) and the Dragonmaster (who is also the 3 kids father) would care for and handle it. But then one day the dragon laid eggs, and the citizens were furious about the raise in taxes that would mean. They went up to its cave, killing the dragon and smashing its eggs... exept for one. The three kids (two boys and a girl) grabbed a small blue egg during the attack, and escaped through a tunnel with it that led deep into the mountains full of tunnels and monsters, where most of the story takes place. Theres also the question of who will be the new Dragonmaster when the egg hatches. the oldest feels it should be him because he is the oldest and male, the girl thinks it's about time they had a female dragonmaster, and the youngest just wishes they'd stop fighting. This is a really great book, my one and only complaint is that it left off in such a way that there should have been a sequel.

I found this book in a library several years ago, and I loved it. It's about three kids who are the children of the Dragonmaster, who cares for the dragon that protects their city. The people would pay gold taxes (for the dragons hoard) and the dragon would protect them. Then one day the dragon laid eggs. The people, knowing taxes would go up grew angry, and while the three kids are staying at the dragons cave (for safety, because being the dragonmasters kids isn't such a respected thing anymore), people from the city attack the dragon, killing it and smashing its eggs...exept for one. During the attack, the kids grab a small blue egg and run out through a secret tunnel in the back of the cave, and are soon lost inside the mountions full of tunnels and monsters in an attempt to make it out alive and save the egg. Plus, the whole time theres conlict between the three over who gets to be the new dragonmaster when the egg hatches. The oldest belives it is his right because he is the oldest son, the girl feels that its about time there was a female dragonmaster, and the youngest (a boy) just wishes the other two would stop fighting. This is a wonderful adventure that anyone should read if they can get a copy of it. My only complaint is that it felt like there was supposed to be a sequel, and i wish there was.

Get them involved
Students really got involved in science investigation as they tried to solve one of the mysteries in this book. During a summer camp for children ages 9-12, we used the mystery written for the older students. They loved the hands-on involvement and stayed engrossed all week. If your science curriculum is putting your students to sleep, this book will help you jumpstart their interest. There are two different mysteries. One is designed for K-3 while the other works well with the older students. Even students of mixed ages and abilities worked well together and were successful. The students only had one complaint...The book did not give them a definitive answer as to who was the guilty party. They wanted to be told who the criminal was and why, but had to settle for a deduction of their own. Although I find value in that open-ended style, they were frustrated by it.

Wonderful learning experience!
This book is absolutely amazing! It contains two different mysteries to solve (one for younger grades and one for older grades). In a practicum for my teaching degree we did the older grades mystery with a class of fifth graders and they loved it. They were able to look for clues, gather evidence, map the crime scene, scientifically test the evidence, use deductive reasoning to solve the mystery and much, much, more. The educational value of this book is tremendous. A great supplement for the science curriculum and also to help kids to use logic and reasoning. It's a must have for all teachers!

A sweet childhood classic
This book, about a young, callow witch by the name of Blanche, is a tender and sentimental story of Halloween in the 1950s. It will take you back to a simpler time in your life, when problems were about friendships and fun, and it'll open your heart to forgotten innocense.

I still have my copy from 1956 when the book was published, and although I'm in my late forties, I still treasure it, and read it aloud to my friends every Holloween. The author, Margerat Embry, was the original JK Rowling, and Blanche was Harry Potter's great, great, cousin. Try and get a copy, you'll remember your childhood dreams.

Childhood Memories
I remember reading this story over and over in elementary school. It was a favorite for everyone in my class and would create fights over who got to borrow it from the classroom. One of my fondest memories of 2nd grade was performing a play of this story.

Captivating story of one of advertising's greatest triumphs
With the low-brow humor of "whazzzzzup" and high-speed editing of MTV-style ads dominating the landscape, it's almost hard to imagine how memorable the quaint multi-sign Burma-Shave ads were. The combination of clever verse and brilliant exposition -- stretching along the wide-open road until the punch line could be delivered -- is unlike any other ad delivery in history.

Author Frank Rowsome, Jr. tells the story of the campaign's creation and life, and provides a listing of all signs from the first in1927 ("Shave the modern way / No Brush / No Lather / No Rub-in / Big Tube 35-c Drug Stores / Burma Shave") through their last in 1963 ("Our Fortune / Is Your / Shaven Face / It's Our Best / Advertising Space / Burma-Shave"). In between is an amazingly clever collection of poems, including contest winners, shorter signs for smaller displays, spin-off tooth powder and lotion jingles, and regional ads.

Great reading for those remembering the signs as well as those who just want to get a smile from some great advertising - one of the USA's most underappreciated art forms.

Best of nostalgia
I read this book twenty odd years ago, and I loved it. It brought back such fond childhood memories of my days on the farm in Belsano, PA, where a set of the signs stood soldier-like in the lower field of my grandad's farm. I heard from the grown-ups that someone paid him to put them there, and money was scarce in those days.

I was always intrigued by those signs, so when I saw the book advertised for the first time, it was a must-have for me. I cherished owning a complete set of the verses, most of which I'd never seen.

The book is well-written in that it has a lot of historical fact, loads of humor, and the story-telling holds your interest to the last page. One of those "can't put it down" types.

Somewhere in my travels, I've lost my copy and have mourned it's loss. Thanks to Internet, I will once again have my own cherished copy of "Verse by the Side of the Road."

A must for old car buffs!
If you currently own a car built before 1965, there's a pretty good chance you remember driving past those wonderful Burma Shave signs.

How delightful those signs were as we went on Sunday drives with Mom and Dad. Here is not only the complete history of the company but also ALL of the rhymes.
