My favorite Tarot book is now in Spanish
This is my number one favorite book on the Tarot, and I have bought many copies to give as gifts to my friends. Someone gave me the Spanish translation for Christmas ("Aprenda Como Leer el Tarot") and I actually enjoy it more in Spanish than in English. I love this book no matter what language I read it in.

Wonderful Reference Tool
This book is a great reference book to get the basic idea of an important person, place, or philosophy. It really is a book of global culture. It has many important western references as well as non-western or non eurocentric references. I like to just open the book for a few minutes whenever I am sitting near the bookshelf and learn something new. Each entry is about a half a page on average. Some are less some are more. There is really so much to learn about the world that our western education dosn't teach us. For example you can get a consice description of the French Revolution, or learn about Kuukai (774-835), a Japanese religious leader, or read about Macumba, an Afro-Brazilian religion. It's all here.

For those of us that didn't pay attention in History Class
This is my first time recommending a book and I couldn't have chose a better reference tool! As an American living in Europe, having never been intrigued by history, I often refer to this book during or after discussions as a fact checker. Highly recommended!

informative, rewarding, educational, historical accounts
I read this book this summer and the insight I gained cannot be paralleled. This book gives detailed accounts of people, places, and events of major influence in our time and in history. No one should be allowed to call himself/herself "educated" until she/he has read this book. What a wonderful resource!

Most Rewarding
Finding this book with cassetts is an opportunity not to be miss no matter what the cost. Some things in life are fun but this is one that no one should miss and enjoy it with pleasure and a sip of wine-of course!

New French With Ease
I have used a lot of different sources in my attempt to teach myself French. Because the lessons flow so effortlessly I keep returning to "New French With Ease". The lessons are entertaining, and by using the CD's I am really learning to hear spoken French. I recommend it above all others.

This book was an exellent portrayal of Wright's work
When faced with a difficult term paper I turned to this book. It provided me with invaluable information to include in my paper. Wright's work, in my opinion, is some of the most senstional writing in modern times and needs to be represented well. This book vividly describes his progression into authorhood and his works from there on in. I would recommend this book to anyone in search of the ultimate research resource.

Very broad
This book gives a great overview of the meaning of the tarot. The book is thourough, easy to read, and like the title says, "simple". There are about 2 pages of possible meanings for each card.

The reader is left to infer the real meaning of the card based opon a variety of given meanings. Situation is given, as are Key Words, and associations with People.

This is all well and fine, but what part of what do I read about, as a beginner? (Hypothetically) I'm not actually a beginner.. and I can figure it out. But this book is marketed for beginners. It is almost TOO broad. With all the possible meanings, which one is the one appropriate for your reading?

I'd recommend this book, NOT if you are a beginner, but if you are somewhat experienced in the Tarot and want new and different insights and ideas as to the interpretations of the cards.

A Book That Demystifies the Mystical!
Picking up a deck of Tarot Cards is like jumping feet first into a cold lake. It may be exhilerating, but it's pretty intimidating as well, especially to a seeker who has no idea what he or she is about to get into. This book offers hope, practical advice, and common-sense answers to the beginner, the intermediate student, and the advanced adept alike.

Lavishly illustrated with the lovely Robin Wood cards, but applicable to any deck, Louis' remarkable observations and essays on each card are on the mark, easily understood, and readily remembered to any serious student of the Tarot.

Louis seeks more than "how to read," and instead teaches the meaning of each card as a tool of self inspection. If the reader cannot read his or herself, she or he cannot read another. Instead, Louis looks to the symbolism, the richness, and the history of each card as pertains to the reader. "Know thyself" was the inscription of the Oracle of Delphi, and Louis has tried to apply that knowledge to his interpretaion of the cards.

The result is a splendid text for beginner or experienced practitioner alike. A wonderful read, a glorious illustrated guide, and a charming introduction to an art too long held too arcane for the layman. "Tarot: Plain and Simple" is the best addition to the field in thrity years!

The Door Is Finally Opened!!
I gave up on the study of the Tarot in the early 1980s because I couldn't find a book which was not written in archaic, stilted English. I found "Tarot Plain and Simple" several months ago and will say that it has changed my life. I find it the perfect tool (now that I can understand, in depth, the meaning of the cards and their relationships) for focusing my intuitive abilities. Regardless of where you are personally in your Tarot study, this book cannot but help you in so many ways to develop your innate perception of the human condition. And if you are a Tarot beginner, as I was, you will be amazed at the ease with which you can progress in your pursuit of understanding. I wish I had had this book twenty years ago! Enjoy.

Astrology at its best
I found this book easy to read, very clear and understandable. It is not a book for a novice. You have to know some basic astrology before you study horary. But when you are ready to learn horary, this this the place to start. The author reviews the history of horary and gives clear examples of all the concepts. There are lots of real life examples that make fascinating reading. This is astrology at its best.

A special, complete and clear book.
Dear Mr. Louis: I bought your book Horary Astrology: Plain and Simple via Amazon.com two monthes ago. Well, it's very, very good. A special, complete and clear book. I've already finished my first reading and now I'm studying and reading it again and again with gratitude and happiness. It will help me a lot in my Astrology work. If a person really enjoys Astrology, she would have this book as a precious gift.

This is a great book.
Anthony Louis makes the obscure world of horary astrology clear and easy to understand. This is a truly scholarly work by a master teacher. No astrologer can afford to be without it.

When your kids say :" I'm bored", this is the book for them!
The experiments in this book are very basic and simple fun activities that are easy to follow and which children -even adults- will enjoy. The book simplifies and explains many fundamental scientific concepts that we encounter daily. The scope of these experiments is very wide , from daily science to weather, chemistry,... which are all implemented with very readily available items. This is a book that will keep inquisitive children motivated and busy for hours, they will especially love the science tricks. The second book : "365 More Science Experiments with Everyday Materials" complements this book. One should get them both!

Fabulously fun resource!
I purchased this book for the science division of our home schooling studies. It is laid out very well and it's easy to understand.

Using materials most people have around the house you can simply flip to the beginning and follow the headings for ideas.

What can you use straws for? Try out the section on "Clutching at Straws", make an Oboe, balance scale, spear a potato, etc.

Would you like to know other uses for lemon juice? Start on page 36. Keep going- check out soap suds, strings, paper cups, experiments with temperature, etc.

Basically you get it, you could spend many great minutes or hours teaching your kids through hands on learning.

Many of these can be done by an older child with very little help- a perfect solution to the "I'm bored" problem.

Please- turn of the TV, electronic games. etc. and let them use their brains- actively.

This is a wonderful book, one that every household would benefit from.

Really simple
I've picked up many books which claim to demonstrate science with "everyday materials." Most times the "everyday materials" are not something I keep on hand. Like cheesecloth. Who keeps cheesecloth on hand? But the demonstrations in this book really are simple and really do include basic household supplies. I've used the book with my five year old and have found the demonstrations and explanations to be thorough enough to engage his interest. And I've enjoyed myself too!

Ok book on African historty but still biased
I liked the book, but it did have many faults to and left much information out abotu the truth and reality of Africa people. I would recommend this book to any one starting out on the path ot learning about African people and African cultures,as well as the dispora. I am not the biggest fan of Henery Louis Gates considering his documentary made also left out much information and was very disrespectful to African people. I know many people feel Gates as a negro saxon. Gates may have his faults, but it seems there are hints of Afrocenttrism in his book. I am glad Gates talks about the black peole of Russia that not very many people know about the mysterious black people of the caucaous mountains. I don't like however how Gates twists the theroies about Ancient Egypt by making Cheikh Anta Diop look less creditable. The other thing about the blacks of the caucaous mountains, the russian goverment has relocated from.
They are the possible link to the ancient egyptains also people known as the colchians.

A MUST for everyone who appreciates history, not HIS-story
Finally, our beloved ancestor W.E.B.DuBois can rest in peace, for his dream has been realized. Over 2100 pages of text, maps, illustrations and photographs explicitly tell the world of the culture, diversity, heroes and heroines, and just plain folk who make up the African diaspora. I purchased the book, selfishly, for myself at first. But, upon receiving it, and glancing through it's many pages, I realized that this huge, 10-lb. encylopedia (yes, that's the proper word for it) will become an heirloom in this family. So, I dedicated it to my children, and signed it, "Love Dad". Anyone who purchases it should do the same, for our future generations. Furthermore, Kwame Anthony Appiah and Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the chief editors of this bible of information need to be commended for their vision and their work in putting this all together...for us all. Thank you, gentlemen.

Spectacular!
As a reference librarian, I have been waiting for this book for a long time. And this is one of the best reference sources on Africa that I have ever seen. Maybe even THE best. Africana is as comprehensive and scholarly a source on African history and culture, from ancient times to the present and on both sides of the Atlantic, as I guess is possible in one volume. And it is a wonderful source of biographical information on Africans and African-Americans, something reference librarians know can sometimes be hard to find. If your library doesn't have this book, strongly urge them to get it.

Essential for healthy hair
The best hair care book I've come across yet! This book is comprehensive but simplistic. It is the first book I've seen that teaches me, as a black woman, how to take care of my curly/frizzy hair. He includes hair grooming for natural hair styles. There's also an incredibly helpful section that teaches you how to shop for products and how to use them, no matter if you wear natural or relaxed styles. He also gives guidance on the "taboo" subjects of wigs, weaves, and hairpieces. He doesn't push any products--unlike other books--and his only interest is in sharing his wealth of knowledge. I love this book!

hair rules
This a wonderful book for black women w/ kinky hair. For every black, white, latino woman in the world this book is for you. If you don't have it, go buy it.

Comprehesive
I found this book to be extremely helpful. I learned about natural oils to use on my hair and scalp among other things and there was a nice long chapter at the end in which Dickey speaks with a dermatologist.

After reading this book I became more adventurous with my hair. I tried using different hair pieces and conditioners and I can honestly say my hair feels and looks better after reading this book.

Treasure Island

Authors: Robert Louis Stevenson and Anthony Bate
Amazon base price: $29.99

Adventure all the way
A timeless classic, written by Robert Louis Stevenson was a great book for those of us who like adventure. The book begins at the Admiral Benbow Inn, which Jim Hawkins, the main character works. Suddenly, from out of the blue a rough sea faring man appears named Billy. That is when the real adventure begins!! Jim and his mother find a treasure map in a dead customers sea trunk. Jim got a couple of respectable people together and they bought a ship named the Hispaniola and set of sail for Treasure Island, not knowing the problems that lay before them. I think the author wanted the them to be, be careful whom you trust. I fully enjoyed this book and I think you will too. To find out the rest read, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Treasure Island is a treasure itself!
"Treasure Island," written by the 19th century novelist, Robert Louis Stevenson, is the timeless story about life on the high seas with pirates, treasure, murder, and treachery.

When young and naive Jim Hawkins is given a treasure map from the mysterious old pirate, Billy Bones, adventure and trouble are not far behind. Soon Jim finds himself aboard a ship with a villainous crew led by the cunning and mendacious pirate, Long John Silver. Greed and the lust for gold driving the pirates, they have murder in mind when they reach the dubious Treasure Island.

Skillfully yet simply written, Robert Louis Stevenson gives us an alluring tale that sparks the imagination. With its dastardly plot and mothly crew of rogues and villains, it entrances the reader, and keeps them wanting more. "Treausure Island" is the perfect read for anyone just wanting a good, exciting story.

Real World Writing
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson is by far one of the best adventure stories I have ever read. This book deserves all five stars, it has everything you could ask for such as, suspense, comedy, action, drama and a great plot line. R.L. Stevenson puts a lot of detail into his main characters such as Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins just to name a few. He describes the scenes with such great detail that at times I had to remind myself that it is only a book. I spent more than 2 months reading this book and I enjoyed every part of it. I could RARELY find a paragraph that was dull, the book was very exciting overall. This book is fairly easy to read and I would recommend it to adults and children of all ages. The book moves at a very good pace, not too fast, not too slow. This book is anything but boring, something new happens in every chapter for instance, when Jim witnesses a murder and when he gets into bar fights, those are just some of the many things that happened. I was very surprised myself when I read this book because it seems a little childish but in fact it's quite the contrary. I highly recommend that you go out and read this book!
