This book is one of the best in it's area.
In all the books I've read, this book has the most interesting and well written case studies I have ever come across. I have re-read it a thousand times. I would love to meet the author and pick his brain. If you get a chance to get a copy of this, BUY IT. And no, my copy is not for sale! If anyone has anything you think I should read, let me know! Take care, Charlie

Extremely Interesting
Rogo documents and speculates about various 'miracles' both famous and unknown: bleeding crucifixes, weeping madonnas, healings at Lourdes and other places, stigmata and stigmatists, Marian apparitions at Lourdes, Fatima, Guadaloupe and Cairo. One might not agree with his ideas but they certainly make good reading.

Must-read for mystical sound/light experiencers, ECKists
There are many superficial books on the market about OBEs, kundalini and mystical experience which are barely worth reading, but in this book Rogo cites SPECIFIC Eastern dietary recommendations, practices and beliefs which are helpful in understanding and promoting the sort of mystical experiences which are often misunderstood or misinterpreted in our culture.

Whether or not you have read about or have heard the "sound of many rushing waters" as mentioned in Revelations or have heard that sound, the buzzing of bees, OM, etc... during meditation, out-of-body experiences, awakening from sleep or while in a state of deep concentration, this book is a very useful resource.

Good ol' Impiricism
It's amazing to me that this book is out of print while faddish new age types of books sell so well, and remain in print for decades. A slim yet coprehensive volume, this book is an excellent survey of what real scientific research has revealed about matters such as clarevoiance and precognition. An easy read that is refreshing because it lacks both the naysayer cynicism typical of the scientific communities general reguard for such things, and also the useless dogmatic baggage of the New Age Movement and similar groups. Rogo carefully explains the various aspects of expirements perfomed, and elucidates on the evidence and its implications with clinical and open minded frankness. Also included are methods that could be used to aid in personal exploration of psychic pheonomena

The Poltergeist Experience: Investigations into Ghostly Phenomena

What are they?
D. Rogo examines the characteristics of the poltergeist phenomena. Like every other researcher of poltergeists, D. Rogo believes in them. He goes so far as to say that poltergeists may be a product of our own minds, though once built they develop on their own. I myself compare D. Rogo's theory to a metaphor of fire. We can set the conditions to make fire. We can grab the sticks, rub them together, and produce fire. But, once the fire is under way, it behaves on its own unless, of course, we dampen it or let it lose concentration. This, then, would be Rogo's picture of the poltergeist. On the other hand, we could argue that the poltergeist is more like a remote control car. Again, we put it into motion, but we direct it completely. The only difference being that r/c cars are powered by batteries and the willing of our conscious minds. A poltergeist, if like a r/c car, is likely driven by the 'unconscious,' whatever that may be.

To sum up, D. Rogo suggests that the poltergeist has characteristics of an entity and a non-entity. It has to be a kind of 'though-form' which probably has some kind of psychological purpose. Or, says D. Rogo, we may be dealing with personality fragments: for instance, the 'anger' of Hitler may separate itself from him and live on in the form of violence. Or, the moments when Hitler was loud and shouting are 'imprinted' on the places where they took place.

For my part, I agree with Harry Price and Colin Wilson that poltergeists are, 9 times out of 10, entities. I do not entirely agree with D. Rogo. However, like D. Rogo I see that this phenomena is tremendously baffling.

I recommend this little book because it has interesting observations on a phenomena that not enough scientists look into.

My review of this book.
In this book Rogo looks into the characteristics of poltergeists phenomena. Rogo does believe that their are entities such as poltergeists, but says that they are a part of the human concious, but they start to develope after that. It acts as like a figurative ripple that once we start the ripple it spreads out and goes of it's own accord.

I liked this book because it shows a new more non-spiritual way of explaing poltergists, that they start in our minds, but start to manifest themselves after we let them loose and they go about they're intentions, and not the hokey 'unfinished buisness' theory that so many believe is true wether from movies, books, or whatever.

To sumerize what Rogo is saying is that a poltergeist is real and nonreal, it has features of both thoght and nonseintnet.that although they're not real they have some kind of purpose in the material world.

I agree with Rogo that poltergeists are possibly a part of our mind that can start happining once we get it rolling in our minds.

Psychic Breakthroughs Today: Fascinating Encounters With Parapsychology's Latest Discoveries

Solid Overview of Parapsychology
The late D. Scott Rogo was one of the most prolific writers on paranormal phenomena, and also one of the few who did the legwork to check out the facts on his own. Although his writing is sometimes a little sloppy (subject-verb agreement seems to be a problem), his thinking is always clear and sensible. Far from being a true believer, Rogo takes skeptical objections seriously, sometimes accepting their validity, at other times debunking the debunkers by looking more closely into their assertions. (His research into the much-maligned "counting horse," Clever Hans, is fascinating, and his demolition of magician James Randi's unfounded attacks on parapsychologists Puthoff and Targ is invaluable. Both subjects are covered in the book's last chapter, "The Failure of Skepticism.") Rogo looks at the so-called Mars Effect, ESP in animals and humans, afterlife and reincarnation evidence (and its weaknesses), shamanism, and other issues in this fast-paced, compact survey of the field. Also recommended: THE CONSCIOUS UNIVERSE by Dean Radin.

very scientific
This book looks at parapsychology and psychic phenomenon in a very scientific and objective manner. It is definately worth reading.

The Search for Yesterday: A Critical Examination of the Evidence for Reincarnation

Historical overview of reincarnation research.
D. Scott Rogo offers a thorough, balanced account of the history of research into reincarnation. He breaks the phenomenon of past-life recall into its key areas, provides extremely strong case-studies, and then examines the possible alternative explanations. With a rare ability to look objectively at all possibilities, he avoids the dogmatic error of assuming "all or nothing". This book provides a solid background for this area of study, but is also worth reading just for the strength of the collected cases. He is unafraid of presenting cases which support reincarnation, telepathy, and cryptoamnesia, and suggests that all three may be present in any case suggestive of reincarnation.

this is the most boring book I've ever seen before
the author of this book spend pages and pages about experiences of people who has positive obe,but give very few exercises, the point that made mad with this book is that you read and read only testimony and nothing else,is good to read about people who has been succesfull, but is not fair that the entire book is dedicated to this

very mediocre book! I dont reccommend it

good
you should read this book before any others and before you check out the world wide web for information on astral projection. it's that good

Great book!
This is a great book with several different methods on how to get an Out-of-body-experience. I have had the book for about 3 weeks and allready I've had 3 OBEs! And the author do not get into his personal beliefs in OBEs, and that is very nice so you can make your own!

Not that much convincing proof
If you are a non believer, this book will not change your mind. I have been studying many things dealing with parapsychology. The "proof" they have in here isn't very convincing. Also, it's not very interesting. I gave it one star because I couldn't choose zero.

You Got To Love The Title
'Phone Calls from the Dead' doesn't it give you a mental image of a phonebooth standing in the clouds of heaven with a long line of departed waiting to use it? I agree the documentation in several cases is not as rigorous as it might be but you must admit they are darn good ghost stories! When it comes to psychic research my skeptical intelligence doesn't keep me from appreciating a good yarn.

Phone Calls from the Dead

The Land Beyond Area Codes....
I'm nearly tempted to give "Phone Calls from the Dead" a couple of extra stars for what might be the best paranormal title in the history of publishing. Certainly, this insane and vastly entertaining non-examination of long-long-distance calls from The Land Beyond Area Codes deserves some credit for being a fun read. And the book is educational in its own way as a marvelous study in the practice of leaping (connecting?) to elaborate conclusions based on no evidence whatsoever. So maybe I should be kinder in my rating. It's a tough call.

Anyway, in this book we learn about "Theta-agents" contacting the living via telephone to give cryptic messages on behalf of the (usually) recently departed. We learn about living people sometimes placing phone calls without actually placing them. (I wonder what those look like when the bill arrives?) And we are presented with alternate theories, none of which I can reCALL at the moment. Paranormal writers always present a variety of theories, possibly in the hope that the reader will not get hung up on any one theory. And, in keeping with the paranormal party line, these authors don't hesitate to suggest that any or all criticism of their views is off-line. Obviously, we are to free our minds of any critical static as they ring in one theory after another.

Crank literature can be tedious, but this book flows quite smoothly, with a serious and busy tone that contrasts greatly with the sheer lunacy of the material. I eagerly await "Crank Calls from the Dead" and "Phantom Telemarketers." And I hope no one from beyond ever calls me collect.

Not that much convincing proof
If you are a non believer, this book will not change your mind. I have been studying many things dealing with parapsychology. The "proof" they have in here isn't very convincing. Also, it's not very interesting. I gave it one star because I couldn't choose zero.

In Search of a strange Phenomenon
"This book has been extremely difficult to draft since it concerns a subject upon which nothing was previously been written" note the writers in 1979 in their acknowledgments though this is actually not quite true:The first contacts from beyond via telephone were described in detail in a book entitled "Voices from Beyond by Telephone" written by the Brazilian Carlos G. Ramos under the pen-name Oscar D'Argonell in 1925.However these two books seem to be the only ones written exclusively about an object that -among many others- gained the attention of writers who were involved in ADC [After Death Communication] phenomena and was included -wrongly to my opinion-in the research field of ITC. [Instrumental Transcommunication] The cases examined by the authors in the book -without estimating the statistical details-are less than one might expect, about 10-15 but were analysed accurately and intensively. Notable also is the element of spectacular coincidences related with the cases mentioned and can not be ignored. In order to approach an explanation about paranormal Telephony the writers examine three theories:The spiritistic or survival theory,"to begin with, we of course felt that these alleged phone manipulations might indeed be masterminded by the dead during attempts to contact us",the EDB [extradimensional being] theory "however we could not dismiss the possibility that some other types of paraphysical or extradimensional being-perhaps invisible denizens which co-inhabit the Earth with us or exist in some parallel universe- might be playing a huge cosmic joke on us..such beings might be endowed with the ability to manipulate our phone system and mimic the voices of the dead" and finally the PK [psychokinetik]-from the living theory."Finally we also thought that the witnesses themselves might be unwittingly manufacturing these calls through their own innate mind-over-matter [or psychokinetic] abilities." [Chapter 4.The source of the calls I. Problems and possibilities]The calls themselves are collected into the following categories: 1."crisis" calls , received within 24 hours of the caller's death,2.postmortem calls, received within 7 days after death 3,4,5. calls within 30 days, from 2 to 6 months and after 6 months. The authors also try to explain the "Mechanics of the Calls" [Chapter 6] which seems to be the most difficult of all. "To date unfortunately no phantom caller has ever explained to his bewildered listener just how he produced his call so all we can do is guess" Their remarks though are interesting indeed. They examine two different theories , the electromagnetic theory "If these calls are incoming signals, then the phantom telephone voices would have to be an electromagnetic phenomenon...our witnesses really heard only a pattern of electrical oscillations that imitated human speech." and the paraphysical theory "if however these voices are somehow being produced over or within the specific instruments on which they are received , their nature might be different...they might be some sort of human speech or "independent voice"..speaking directly over the amplifier in the receiver." The authors also include in their book a chapter about the history of EVP [Electronic Voice Phenomena]that is to my opinion -regardless of the informations reported- a mistake of them,[Electronic contact with the dead:A wider Perspective Chapter 8.]since the reader might be confused with informations that don't have to do a lot with the object of the book.Last but not the least in their last chapter [Appendix: some critic of the evidence] the authors don't hesitate and that is to their honour to include in their book the critique of others about their work , though it seems that some of it is against them!"after completing the first major draft of this volume copies were sent to three well known and highly respected parapsychologists , each of whom agreed to write some comments for us.[Dr.Gertrude Schmeidler, Dr.John Palmer and Dr John Beloff.] D. Scott Rogo who unfortunately was brutally murdered on 16 August 1990 and ever since did not communicate with nobody in this mortal world by the phone ,together with his colleague Raymond Bayless seemed to know very well the difficulties of their attempt to explain this paranormal phenomenon. Their investigations lasted two years and reading them is no loss of time. More than two decades later uncountable writers mention their book to their bibliography about several paranormal phenomena mostly related with EVP and ITC investigations. I would like not to write and publish all this , something that it was found out to be against my best will but a review i read about that book to my opinion was completely unfair.Anyway the book is so rare now that the continuation of publishing opinions seems to be hardly expected.
