great introductions, great bargain
Of the two reprint volumes (Greek and German Philosophers) that Oxford has published of its Past Masters series, I think all of the individual essays (except the one on Plato) are reprinted currently in its 'Very Short Introduction to...' series. So these volumes are a good deal because i think the 'Very Short Introduction' series are 10 bucks each. As well as being very clear and concise introductions by world renowned scholars.

great introduction to some great philosophers
I was already familiar with Nietzsche but I enjoyed the skilled manner in which these authors condensed the profound ideas of these philosophers into explanations feasibly understandable to beginnners in philosophy. There were certain concepts I could not agree with in the works of these great men; however, I admire the systems and ideas they developed in their works.

The best of the hardest
These are highly admirable overviews by some of the best of the current set of the philsophers examining past greats.

This must have been a difficult book to put together. The editors would have to have found not one, but four great authors from which to put together introductions for the hardest authors in all philosophy.

He succeeded. This book makes immediately explaicable two of the hardest authors in all history- Kant and Hegel. I was amazed at the level of commentary in this short a work. It is almost impossible to pull this easy an introduction off. My hat is off to both Scruton and Singer.

The other commentaries and introcductions were as good as they come. Because of the ease of Schoepenhaur and Nietzsche, the authors had more room to give reasonably complete explanations and ruminations on their lives. Janner and Tannaway both make superb additions to these traditions, both commentaries worthy of being works in themselves.

This is four times a good book. My respect to all the authors, and my full throated call for people to read these books.

It truely energizes you!
A great book with stories that exemplify the main ideas contained in the book. Contains an "Insight to Action" after each chapter which helps you apply the concepts. If anyone is interested in finding ways to provide extaordinary service to customers, or become a better leader, read this book.

The One book that's as important as an new-employee manual
This is one of the most inspirational, motivating, and empowering management books available. After reading just a few pages, you find yourself picking up other copies to give to coworkers, clients, and friends.

Dow and Cook have found the ingredients to successfully attract, excite, and retain employees focused on customer-centric goals. Having read their insights, I now know why companies such as Marriott and Schwab are so successful. An excellent, must-read.

Great book.
One of the most important things in life or business is a sense of optimism and possibility. This book helped me renew mine in a big way. I recommend it highly.

A "must" for serious-minded job seekers
Peter Goodman's Win Win Career Negotiations: All You Need To Know About Negotiating Your Employment Agreement is a dynamic and extremely practical guide to understanding and applying useful negotiation tactics when seeking employment regardless of the size or nature of the business or corporation being approached. Individual chapters address basic negotiation skills, interviews, settling issues about salary, stock options, benefits, severance packages, annual reviews and more. Offering the real-life experiences of successful executives as positive examples, Win Win Career Negotiations is a "must" for serious-minded job seekers determined to get the most out of their career opportunities!

This Book is Amazing!
I loved this book! I found it to be an incredibly useful resource for anyone involved in the employment negotiation process. I was particularly impressed with the format of Win-Win Career Negotiations. The book starts with a primer on the negotiation process that was instructive and fascinating. Win-Win then walks you through the nuances of negotiating an employment agreement. The final section includes perspectives from real-world negotiators.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Surprisingly useful book amongst morass of career aides
I was happily surprised by this book. Often I will pick up a book and browse through it in the Business Books section of a store, and chuckle at how simple and useless the advice can be. However, Goodman has some very useful examples and tips. Of course, a lot of it is common sense, but for many people, this book will really get the juices flowing. In fact, a lot of books focus on getting a job, but Goodman has selected a very good segment to focus on: once you get a job, how do you negotiate the best possible compensation? The author gets a great concept across: that everything should be part of the negotiation, and think creatively in doing so. This book will help me when I re-negotiate my present contract, no doubt about it. I also found the case studies with real (and notable people) very effective edification of the principles he espouses.

The Confessions and Correspondence, Including the Letters to Malesherbes (The Collected Writings of Rousseau, Vol 5)

This series of Rousseau's collected works is wonderful. . .
This series published by Dartmouth and the University Press of New England is excellent in every way: superb translations based on reliable texts with helpful notes and introductory essays. If you're looking for an edition of Rousseau's "Confessions," forget the obsolete Penguin paperback and stop right here! It's too bad that more of these volumes are not available in paperback--I have only the "Confessions" and "Julie, or the New Heloise," Rousseau's massive and wonderful novel. I imagine that if this series had been published by Princeton as a Bollingen series that it would be available as a complete paperback series, like their edition of the works of Kierkegaard. As it is, you can't go wrong with the Dartmouth edition of "Julie" and the "Confessions"! (Also, by far the best translation of Rousseau's classic "Emile" ever to appear in English, by Bloom, is published by Basic Books.)

Great edition of this classic
What can one say about The Confessions? I would recommend this particular edition because of the inlusion of the letters to Malesherbes, which can shed some light on the process Rousseau's writing of The Confessions. We can also see where the text differs from what actually happaned: there are some discrepiences in his re-telling of the same event. There is as well an excellent introductory essay.

Review of The Feather Quest
A superbly written, thoroughly enjoyable account of birding in the United States. Birders will recognize many of the places which they have visited, and will learn of new spots to see in their own "feather quests". A must read!

Pick up your binos and get outside!
Pete Dunne and his wife Linda are lucky enough to take a whole year off to go birding. And we are lucky enough to come along with them in this part travel book, part bird life list. They start in his boyhood home of Whippany, New Jersey, and criss-cross North America in search of birds. They travel from the tip of the USA at the Everglades to the top of the continent at the Artic Refuge in Alaska. Not only do they write about the birds they see and hear but they also take a look at the many differnent types of people who bird. And it is all done in a comic style but with serious overtones concerning the environment, pollution, and urban sprawl. It makes you want to dust off your binos, find your bird book, and head out into the fields and forests. There is nothing more stirring then seeing a new bird for the first time. In reading this book, all the birds seem to be your first one.

LIKE A MULTI-VITAMIN FOR YOUR MIND!
I read this book at a time in my life when I was feeling very down. I was recovering from a couple of very trying life crises when I came upon this remarkable book. In its pages the origin of negative thinking is revealed along with its effects on our mind and body. As I turned the pages I found myself nodding in agreement as if the authors were revealing something inside of me that had always been there but up to that point had been inaccessible.

Negative thinking can be overt or quite subtle but either way it makes for a chronic, low-grade infection of the mind and soul. This book shows you the way out of the traps of resentment, jealousy, judgement, unhappiness, and despair. Far from being preachy, this book uses common sense along with a brilliant layout to help you to a better life. Whether you are sick in body or mind, you will find the tools in the pages of this book to build for yourself a whole new outlook on life.

P.S. If you can find the companion cassette-tape series read by David Warrilow (now out of print, unfortunately) get them! Warrilow's rich voice bring the pages to life in a wonderful way and you'll find yourself listening and reading or both over and over again!

This is a really wonderful book
I have battled depression on and off for much of my life, and I have to say that this is the best self-help book I have ever read. It is absolutely wonderful. It makes you want to memorize every quote and every precious, uplifting word of wisdom. Some people might say that the things in this book are common sense, but if that's the case, when I look around I see that common sense isn't so common! This book really is a must have for anyone who wants to improve their disposition and feel better emotionally.

A good one
Like any other self help book this too was interesting and most helpful. Unlike other self help books at times this book is very funny too. Writers suggest to have healthy fears such as having sex with gorillas etc. and that all other different fears are not
more but just illusions.
The bottom line - if you strive for knowledge or if you have negative thoughts swimming safely in the ocean of your mind. Have this book, then read it, then apply things you've learned from it in daily life. RESULTS = almost PERFECT

Robin Williams move over
This is a funny book and much more! Great humor to help relieve the sadness of recent events. Also very empowering. I'm a definite "type A" ... lead a very successful and stressful life.
By pumping up my sense of humor and using the author's tips I feel much more relaxed and in control of stuff. Another great side effect is I've discovered laughing my way to sleep helps me sleep soundly and wake up in a good mood. I now relish my nightly reading time. It's like having a good box of chocolates, without the guilt (I'm Catholic). And with my new humor muscle, no one's falling asleep on me any more during my presentations. My only complaint is that I will reach the end soon and there is no sequel yet. I just may read it again.

I recommend this book for presenters because
It is beneficial to presenters because:

It is an easy read, entertaining, funny & instructional. For anyone wanting to be a comedian, a professional speaker, or just wanting to add humor to their life, this is a must-read!

If you want to learn about laughing, personal benefits of humor, why we laugh, or how to see the funny side of life, this is a great place to start.

If you are a professional presenter, or want to be, this book takes you, step by step, through the hows and whys of finding and using humor.

It explains types of humor, how to remember and tell a joke, how to prepare and present your humor.

I have implemented several of Roger's tips in my presentations and in the Therapeutic Humor class that I teach.

HOW TO BE FUNNIER (Happier, Healthier & More Successful Too)
HOW TO BE FUNNIER gets a five star rating. For speakers and entertainers this guide is a must read. For everyone else it's a fun read . . .with much to be gained. The material is mostly inside tricks and techniques used by professional comedians and humorists. It's presented in a very funny and very easy to understand and easy to use manner. It's something that anybody can put to use since everybody can benefit from a stronger sense of humor. The examples are great! You see exactly how it's done and whether you want to improve your ability to be funny, write funny, delivery funny, be quicker witted, recall jokes and stories or just have a stronger sense of humor in general it's all there and very easy to follow. It's even makes a good "self help" book for improving attitude or moods. It has the widest variety of humor and humor styles I've come across. My appreciation for humor has skyrocketed since reading this.

Life 102: What to Do When Your Guru Sues You
Published in Hardcover by Mary Book / Prelude Pr (1994)

Excellent book for anyone who has tried to leave a star
There is a lot of excellent information in this book for anyone who has been in a cult, certainly. I bought it for a slightly different reason: I wanted to hear how Peter McWilliams explained to himself the incredible stupidity of being sucked into such a bag of lies. I am satisfied with his descriptions, and the book is cheerful, and upbeat! Well worth the purchase price, and I am lucky to have stumbled upon it.

Like Peter, I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, etc., and yet had been married to a person for 20 years (and tied up in court battles with him for the next 7) who was recently diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He was punitive, abusive, and selfish. I wondered if reading Peter's account of having made a similar series of terrible choices would help me in my recovery.

It did, and I highly recommend this book, and would love to thank Peter in person, if I could find an address for him. Also, like Peter, I was depressed in this negative relationship, so in 1992 I bought his book You can't afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought. Again, paralleling the author, as soon as my depression lifted, I was able to "get out" of the problem relationship. How interesting, then, that as the saga of disengaging reaches it's completion, Peter has again left me some "bread crumbs" to find my way home again.

This book is extremely valuable for anyone finding themselves in the unpleasant situation of feeling ridiculous for having succumbed to a bad relationship.

Tragicomedy At Its Best in a Sick and Twisted Karmic Drama
That MSIA now owns the copyright to "Life 102" is a telling admission that John-Roger wanted this embarrassing book killed and sent to hell. The book is an astonishing expose from Peter Mc Williams, a MSIA insider. While the book dishes the dirt on
J-R, the real untold story is still out there: How did MSIA get the copyright? Did Peter McWilliams sell the copyright because he is sick with cancer and needed the money? Did MSIA prevail in court in a legal fight? I have not been able to find out on the internet. Search engines are all linked to MSIA. This reeks of a MSIA tactic to control search engines -- something easy to do if you have enough of the faithful's tithes to spend on endarkenment.

J-R is rotten to the core if we are to believe Mc Williams' story. Yet Mc Williams comes across as being no better than J-R when all is said and done. Mc Williams plays the victim and J-R the bully. The two deserved each as we read of their sick and twisted karmic drama being played out in the pages of Life 102.
I would like to see J-R write "Life 103: What To Do When Your Devotee Writes a Sensationalized Expose On You."

The book is well worth reading and should belong in the library of anyone interested in the history of the New Age movement in America. Personally, the book did its job insofar as it convinced me to stay away from John-Roger and MSIA. I am of the opinion that MSIA has survived David McLane, the L.A. Times, and Mc WIlliams not because of its spirituality, but rather because of the power of its lawyers, a war chest full of money, a PR firm, and the ability to maintain a legal war against to grind its enemies to powder and outlast the interest of the critics.

A marvelously witty debunking of a true sleazeball!
Peter McWilliams has done the world a great service by writing this book. If only one person avoids the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness because of his efforts, his time and trouble (and he's had a lot!) will not have been in vain. His skewering of Arianna Huffington is particularly delicious.
