Eating New England: A Food Lover's Guide to Eating Locally
A must for all food lovers traveling to New England. One of the few books for those who travel to experience food, rather than eat while they travel.

Travel, with food
A few reviews I have seen of this book elsewhere expressed surprise that it wasn't a restaurant guide or cookbook. Thank goodness it isn't! There are plenty of New England cookbooks and restaurant guides, but *this* book isn't meant to be either. Instead, it's a travel guide centered around local foods. "Eating New England" directs you to places where people make and sell good food and don't mind putting the process on display, from farmstands to factories, so that you can not only get something tasty and locally produced but also learn a little something about where food comes from. The book is a good resource for planning road trips, or for checking out what local food producers you can visit in a given area.

If you live in New England, you probably already know where in your area you can pick your own berries or apples, or where you can find the closest place to eat lobster caught in sight of your table, or where you can buy goat cheese and pet the goats that helped make it, but if you're even an hour away from home and care about this sort of thing then you'll want this book.

I should point out that there are a few restaurants which seem to have been included because they showcase local foods, but they're not the focus of the book. There are also a couple of recipes as a bonus, but if they'd included more recipes and restaurants there wouldn't have been room for the more interesting stuff you can't find easily elsewhere.

Fabulous!
I acted on Kathleen's review and bought the book. Of the five yoga books and three videos I have purchased in the past month, this is by far the best organised and most well presented.

For an absolute beginner like me, its clear, uncluttered and unintimidating format is essential.

There are ten lessons. You start with lesson one. Once that has been conquered, you progress to lesson two, alternating them. And so on.

There is no pretentious impossible to pronounce jargon. This, for a beginner, is distracting, meaningless and unnecessary.

If a posture is challenging, she says so while encouraging you in your progress. She does not make it look so easy that you wonder if the persons in the photographs are contortionists and you are just a stiff lump.

The photographs are large and clearly illustrate the postures.

The suggested meal plan to accompany the exercise regimen is very easy to adapt to one's likes, dislikes and budget and does not require any expensive shopping excursions to fancy food markets.

I appreciate most the clear progression of lessons that are challenging yet doable and are of reasonable length for the working person.

After one week I am on lesson two and I am already feeling more flexible and confident that at last I have found a programme that I can and will stick to. I am looking forward to my fabulous shape and I know that it will happen because I am already feeling the difference in my clothing. (Particularly around the waist)

FABULOUS FEELING WHENEVER!
This book truly is sensational. Whether you want to lose weight, improve body shape, firm muscles, increase flrexibility, or simply FIND A WELCOME ESCAPE FROM THE INSANE AND INHUMAN STRESSES OF EVERYDAY LIFE! THIS BOOK is for you! Add it to your shopping cart now! Now, I tell you!

As a devotee of Hatha (physical) Yoga for some 6 months now, I've searched high and low for great books which I can introduce to friends just starting out and yet also appreciate at my stage of advancement.

This book is the best I've found in 6 months of earnest searching!

The clearly set out lesson plans guide you as to how much to do and how to incorporate Yoga into everyday life without retreating to mountain solitude or throwing your 'real-life' schedule completely out of whack!

The pictures are wonderful as they show each step of the movement progression (rather than just the maximum position as is the case with maany other books!)

Breathing for each exercise is also included (VERY helpful for maximising effectiveness!)as are Barbara's own motivating hints and tips for both beginners and advanced students.

The diet plan and accompanying notes at front and back of the book will keep you on track to weight loss and muscular dexterity if you decide to use Yoga as an entire fitness program.

However, by far the greatest highlight of this book is the content, and the great ease with which it can be incorporated into your life routine. I am a full time student and part time secretary and waitress, extremely busy, but I spend one hour per night on my yoga while watching my favourite TV.This book strips away the mysticism and gets right down to the benefits. A session with Barbara Currie will open your body, mind, and soul and leave you refreshed, relaxed, REVITALISED! As she says, when you begin Yoga "you realise the brilliant stretches go systematically through your whole body, releasing tensions that may have been lingering for years..."

I cannot recommend it highly enough. Change your physicality, your flexibility, your life, even! Feel the best that you've felt in years, and gain that sense of achievement that comes from knowing you are truly doing something worthwhile for yourself!

Great for beginning and experienced osteopaths.
This is the long awaited basic textbook for osteopathic medicine. It is surprisingly complete, covering philosophy, history, research, and manipulative techniques. The beginning osteopathic student may find it most useful for its practical discussion on the techniques--high velocity, myofascial release, etc. I believe it is also helpful in standardizing our terminology, which will make it easier when taking board exams or talking with colleagues from other osteopathic schools. It includes contributors well known within the osteopathic community, including Michael and William Kuchera, Melicien Tettambel, Eileen DiGiovanna, and many others. As a family practice resident I frequently turn to this textbook first when I want to know more about how to treat a patient or when preparing lectures for students and housestaff.

The osteopathic manipulative therapy bible!
This text is actually required reading for most if not all osteopathic medical students. It is a 'textbook', however, and hence completely (sometimes exhaustively!) comprehensive. But it is easy to read so that anyone with an interest in OMT will get a methodic how-to for myriad techniques, also a thorough history of osteopathic medicine to boot! One of my OMT professors at the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine wrote or co-wrote a few of the chapters so of course, I think those are the best! If you are looking for an educational approach to learning manipulation and the reasons behind it, this is a valuable resouce.

A Good Where To Go and How To Get There Skiing Guide
The Rogers' have done it again! I have been down hill, crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing for many years and I thought I knew a lot about the Northeast snow country. I have just read about places and activities that are new to me and I thought I had been all over northern New England! Not only do they provide a good overview of the most popular ski areas and in some cases even a small history of some features and events of those areas but they also give any new (or old) visitor a varying list of other activities that might otherwise be overlooked. I have been interested in maybe a dog sled tour but never really knew where to go for information. Now I know what to get for a friend of mine for a Christmas or a birthday presant, an all day dog sled ride. I just know that we will both want to drive our own sleds! I did not know that was possible either. Although for the most part I like to "bushwack" on x-country skiis, my interest in some of the groomed trails that are available and rather inexspensive, has been peeked because of the other possible after ski activities that are available in the area. I never heard of bowling with a frozen turkey but I want to go and watch and maybe even try it now. I like museums and now I know which ones might be open in the winter if the weather turns bad. Snowmobiles anyone? Now I even know where to rent and ride be it for an hour or all day. You say you don't own any kind of skiis? Well with this guide you can find just the kind of place for you first time out and if skiing does not agree with you, because you just hate getting all covered with snow, just try one of those fine libaries or places to eat. Snowshoeing at the Balsams hotel? Yes! I've always wanted to see the ponds that are up in the woods behind the hotel. And afterwards I can maybe either relax there or head back to my snug room in Colebrook or to my favorite cabin by the lake in Pittsburg. How ever you look at it, this guide has something for everyone, skiing nut or not. Take the friend that likes to stay inside while you do "outdoor " things and then spend the evening talking about the good times you have had all day over a drink and a good meal. This book will stay in the truck all winter like my skiis and snowshoes do!

Great book for New England visitors
Skiing in New England can be fantastic, but it's not the only wintertime activity available. In fact, in New England Snow Country: 701 Ways to Enjoy Winter Whether You Ski or Not, authors Barbara Radcliffe Rogers and Stillman Rogers describe 700 additional ways to enjoy a New England winter, from snowshoeing to igloo building to ice-bowling with a frozen turkey in the wilds of Vermont. (Don't knock it until you try it, we say.)

The 188-page soft-cover guide, published in October, 1999, is broken down into regions, including New Hampshire, Maine, the Berkshires in Massachusetts, and the Green Mountains of Vermont.

For each region, the authors describe activities ranging from winter recreation (cross-country and alpine skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice skating, ice fishing, dog sledding, and more) to pursuits such as maple sugaring or visiting the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences Raptor Center, where ailing birds are rehabilitated.

The book is sprinkled with New England winter trivia, debunking some myths such as the reason for covered bridges. Were these bridges originally covered to keep out snow? No; snow had to be shoveled on the bridges so sleighs could pass, but the covering did keep the snow from building up too high and putting too much pressure on support timbers.

The guide includes detailed information about places to lodge and dine at each area, as well as event listings. This book is perfect for groups that include a non-skiing member, and will be priceless for those occasions where the slopes turn out to be less than ideal for skiing or boarding - a little freezing rain or a January thaw can make off-slope activities look rather desirable. And, the day doesn't end when the lifts stop running.

New England Snow Country retails for $ and is a fantastic value. (Review reprinted with permission from dcski)

Graet N.H. Guide
This book gives very concise and complete directions to the locations of the places listed. Not only was I able to find every location that I wanted to see and with little or no problem, but also there were good places to eat and other things to do along the way.The accuracy in the distances from the starting points to the destinations is so good that with care there is almost no chance of getting lost. Obviously the authors took great care to be accurate in their discriptions and directions and have written a book that is a real joy to use. I look forward to using other guides by the same authors as I know the will be correct in their information.

Useful!
Spent a week in the White Mtns and used the book extensively. Most interesting was "discovering" the old Mineral Springs resort in Conway. Book was well written, concise maps and directions were very clear. This book, combined with a good road map and a general guidebook make touring NH very enjoyable.

A really delightful introduction to the Dominican Republic. The photography is superb and both the pictures and the text are sophisticated enough for adults.

Wow...
I thought that this was a great study of various Jungian archetypes and their applications to Shakespearian "myths". This was especially a nice addition to the plays I saw in Ashland, OR. I totally reccomend this in depth analysis.

First Book I Grab to Solve Problems
This is a great book and the first I grab when I need to get information or to solve a problem. If I could only have one book on organic solutions I'd pick this one hands down.

Super compilation of info
I have lots of organic gardening books and this is one of the best overall. It is detailed, informative and written in an easy to understand manner. Great as a first book for the budding organic gardener.

Help with learning what is wrong -- and what to do about it
I find this book to be quite user-friendly and helpful in identifying different diseases and pests that are affecting my garden. It is also helpful as I plan what to grow because I can decide which varieties are most likely to be successful with relatively little pest and disease control effort on my part.
