A book to treasure - simply stunning photography.
The photographs in this book are mesmerising, and the accompanying text gives you a real insight into the lives of this legendery group. Truly a book to have on display and not on the bookshelf.

It's a must!!
A beaut! The cover and paper qualities set the tone of the content. The candid humorous posed and unposed photos are an absolute delight. I love the edge to edge photos which are complemented by the definite lack of color throughout the book, enhancing it's stylish feel. A wonderful book for anybody to enjoy the most exciting musical group we have ever known. It's a must!!

Absolutely Must-Have Beatles Book
I have been a Beatles fan forever and cannot remember ever feeling as nostalgic as when I turned the pages of this beautiful book. It has become my most prized Beatles possession. Purely and simply, every Beatles fan should buy this book!

Fantastic Introduction to Western Philosophy and Ideas
This is an excellent introduction to the history and great minds of western philosophy. Even if you are not new to philosophical writing you will enjoy this book since it avoids "wordiness" so many other books in this area are guilty of.

My only complaint about the book was the awful artwork that lends little or nothing to the information being presented. Between the amateurish drawings and the pictures of the moronic looking punk girl I found it really distracting to the overall flow of this outstanding book.

The book is still a great deal, and worth every penny to someone interested in thinking deeper.

Gives a good feel of the thinkers and issues
This book gives a good feel for the major Western philosophers ranging from the ancient Greeks to Descartes, Hume, Hegel and Kant to Nietzsche, Marx, Feuerbach, Dewey and Sartre and how they have investigated epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics and political forms. If you don't grasp everything completely don't worry; some of these fellows, particularly the post-modernists, need to be operated on by Ockham's razor.

everyone should own this book
even if you're wel-versed in philosophy, this is such a neat compilation of succinct right on capsules of the greatest thinkers, that it can jog the minds of those of us who know it all, but can't recall it like we used to.

Outstanding Autobiography!!
Eddie Robinson is truly one of the greatest pioneers in the history of athletics. The way he transformed a football program at a little known (if not unknown at the time) black college in the piney woods of north Louisiana, into a program of both national and international notoriety, is a true testament to his greatness. It is amazing to see what this man has overcome and how he has perservered throughout his 56-year coaching stint. With 408 victories under his belt, he is the all-time winningest coach in college football history at any level. He taught his players how to be champions both on and off the field. As a Grambling State University alumnus, and former Grambling Sports Broadcaster, I was fortunate to witness, first hand, what a class act Coach Robinson is. He transcends the word "committment". This autobiography takes you on a journey of overcoming obstacles on the road to success. I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just athletes, who want to understand what it means to perservere!

wonderful autobiography
I'm a big fan of football, so of course i wanted to read, this book about Grambling's great coach. i'm a big fan of grambling except of course when they play Jackson state, or Alcorn. After reading the book, i found Eddie Robinson, to be a wonderful person who cared so much for his team, and his coaches. I felt bad for robinson when i read that a divison 1 school never even contacted him about a job, but what I liked best of all about this book, was he and his wife's Doris love for one another.

Great Book

Born to Win: A Lifelong Struggle to Capture the America's Cup

You feel like you were there
This book is fabulous! For sailors, the story alone is worth the read, but it is much more than just a story about sailing. Bertrand's description of the final race against "the red boat" (Dennis Connor) is so powerful that I felt what he and his crew felt, even before I had read what they felt! Any reader interested in the nature of sport and competition will find this book valuable.

A must for anyone who plans to win anything
Fantastic book. It is an instructive lesson in how to prepare for what you overwhelmingly want to achieve. Being set in the context of one of the most famous sporting events in history, the attempt to wrest the America's Cup from the US after 132 years, makes it that much more exciting. Sailors will love it, but anyone interested in the psychology of winning will gain from this book.

Great Highschool Ethics Book, everything that u need
Great book, simple to understand and easy to use.

A Great Introduction to Ethics
This book is aptly titled, as it introduces ethics and provides a broad overview of the history of ethics and philosophy. It presents the varied views held by many different philosophers and groups (examples: Plato, Utilitarians). It is not a words-only book. On most every page there is an illustration with speech balloons containing further informative text coming from the illustrated characters. It seems to be used in a sort of comical, humorous way. In this way it is informative seriously and light-heartedly at the same time. The illustrations make for easier reading, though there are some high-level vocabulary words in the text. Everything considered, I would recommend this as a first book for those interested in ethics.

a "Peter Rabbit" version of Melanie Klein
The other reviews didn't say this, but this book employs almost a comic book approach to Melanie Klein's life and ideas. Every page has incredible graphics with captions by the people in the book describing their views. I read it in two sittings, and feel I now know something about object relations and child psychiatry that I hadn't known. There is a whole series of "introducing" books that I plan to investigate.

Excellent Visual Summary Of Melanie Klein's Psychology
Dr. Hinshelwood, one of the world's leading proponents of Kleinian psychoanalysis, has produced an interesting and readable synopsis of the work of the noted psychoanalyst, Melanie Klein.

Often difficult to understand, Mrs. Klein's work is centred on the intrapsychic aspects of human development. This slim volume allows the reader an opportunity to appreciate some of the more complex aspects of Kleinian thought.

Having digested Dr. Hinshelwood's excellent text entitled "Clinical Klein", I found the visual depictions in "Introducing Melanie Klein" of some of the same cases described in his other work to be helpful and clarifying.

I would recommend any interested reader pick up both volumes and use the "Introducing..." book as a quick reference guide to the "Clinical..." text.

Highly recommended to any Magician. Professional or Amature
I've been studying magic for about 3 years and would say this is one of the best informational books I've found. I now know where the "Tarbell Course in Magic" (considered to be the Bible of Magic and also highly recommended) obtained alot of it's info. Also, for being written back in the mid 1800's, it's hard to believe how much of the patter is still useful today. I would have loved to have seen these "Greats of Magic" perform. So if you can't find an original, pick a copy of the reprint that just came out.

Look for Prof Hoffmann's other two books "Later & More Magic" too.

This was my first book on the art of performance magic.
The material covered is sufficient to take one from wannabe amature to many effects which can be found in the acts of professional performers today (such as the classic cut and restored rope trick, the cups and balls....and others). Sadly, this book is out of print. For those who are able to find copies of it, however, I would like to say that I highly recommend it for the collection of amature and professional alike.

Spectacular
Just the sound of their names, makes your hair stand on end, and your heart beat faster. Bold Ruler, the sire of so many greats. Secretariat, can anyone ever forget his thirty one length win in the Belmont, making him the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Ruffian, the magnificent filly who came to grief in the fateful match race against Foolish Pleasure . The names go on Alleged, Spectacular Bid, Every page has a story to tell of these champions of the track

This is the book of all books for the thoroughbred lover. None can compare. The text is beautifully written, making you feel you know each animal, and all their quirks. The paintings by Reeves are magnificent, you feel you could reach out and stroke a velvet nose, or caress a silky ear.

I purchsed my copy in 1980 and along side my 1976 copy of Classic Lines these books are my pride and joy.

If you love thoroughbreds, this book is a must, you will thrill every time you read it.

*The* reference for anyone who enjoys wine
Some reference books sit on the shelf, forgotten, hoping to be used someday in the future when someone has a desperate need to know how to calculate the third log value of an arctangent.

This book is as far removed from that fate as a Petrus is from a White Zinfandel!

At least once a week I have opened up this gorgeous wine tome and looked up the answer to a question, or read more about a particular wine I was enjoying. With over 3,000 entries to choose from, you can explore the ancient roots of wine in Iraq and Egypt, or learn about new vine-growing techniques winemakers are using in Washington State. The information is clearly written, well illustrated, and not overly technical.

Jancis Robinson, the editor of the tome, is well known in the industry for her knowledge and fluency in wines of all types. Combine her amazing knowledge with fantastic photographs of each wine region, and even reviews of various personalities in wine, and you have a book that you'll keep on the coffee table and actually read often! Be warned - you can lose guests in its pages for hours.

The book is great for a beginner. Confused about Beaujolais Nouveau? Want to know how a White Zinfandel differs from a Red Zinfandel? The Oxford Companion to Wine has clear, concise descriptions of all wine types, explaining their histories, their characteristics, and where they're found now.

The Companion is also a boon for experienced drinkers. It goes into the fine details of how wines are grown, and how various winemakers use different techniques to bring out the best in their particular grapes. There are maps of wine regions, and insights into what makes certain wines unique.

Great as a gift for your favorite wine drinker, but buy one for yourself, too! The book is a wonderful reference tool to have around the house. With its lovely photos of France, Italy, and Spain, it serves as a wine-lovers guide to places to visit or dream about, and wines to drink while doing so. Highly recommended as the only wine book you should ever need.

FROM VINE TO WINE ------- A MINE OF INFORMATION
.

Thirty years ago this book could not have been written. With the increasing ascendancy of the New World wine makers and in particular the influence of the Davis campus of the University of California, viticulture and oenology are now rigorous, scientific and commercially oriented professions. This is reflected in the "Oxford Companion to Wine" which has to be the most comprehensive, authoritative and accessible resource dealing with all aspects of the world of wine.

Jancis Robinson who edited this encyclopedia of wine is a highly respected wine writer and educator. She is also very well credentialled, holding the prestigious title of "Master of Wine".

The real power of this book as an information source is the very effective use of cross-references. Its great fun to see how far one reference will take you on subjects of particular interest to the reader. It would be good to see this book published as a CD-ROM. Hyper-linking all the cross-references would make it even more powerful.

The changes in the wine business over the past generation have seen the previously exclusive, "clubbiness", almost snobby world of fine wine appreciation opened up to everyone. It is books like this that have provided the sources of knowledge which give people the confidence and curiosity to pursue their interest and enjoyment of wine.

France is the traditional home of fine wine. The French approach to wine making is still dominated by practices and methodologies that go back centuries. It is interesting to see in the "Oxford Companion" the strong contrast between the empirically rigorous New World (particularly USA and Australian) methods and the mystery (or mystique) that even today, shrouds much of the French industry.

One of the best illustrations of this dichotomy in the Companion is the entry on "Terroir". This French term encapsulates the mystique that defines a particular vine growing area. It goes well beyond the issue of soil and microclimate but instead embraces everything that makes a particular wine unique.

In the "Companion" the terroir debate seems to come down on the side which believes the term is used to cover vagueness and explain characteristics that are otherwise difficult to explain. This allows sometimes ordinary wine to be passed off as something special.

Compare this to the innovative, scientifically supported approaches used in the New World. A good example is the development of "Canopy Management" the varying techniques used to optimize the yield and ripening characteristics of a grapevine.

Similarly we have see the arrival of "flying winemakers" from Australia into regions like the Languedoc-Roussillon area of France. They have introduced stainless steel fermentation vessels, temperature control and meticulous cleanliness, to what was previously a very rough and ready local business. They are now producing some of the some best Merlots, acknowledged by even the French.

This book will no doubt become the definitive reference book on all matters to do with the world of wine. It will be of the highest value to both the wine professional and the enthusiastic wine lover.

.

Big and Good
This encyclopedia is extensive and very good. It is also very heavy. You may want to get a primer on wine (e.g., "Wine for Dummies") before getting this as a reference, but this is one for your shelves. It covers many aspects of wine and to a great deal of detail in some areas, which is welcomed. Almost all of the information is current. What little is not current is insignificant in size and importance. Take at a good look at this reference.
