If you like Cornwell you will like this book
Evelyn Sutcliffe works as a third year resident at the University Hospital on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Her significant other, psychiatrist Phil Carchiollo, has lately turned moody and argumentative. Ironically, his withdrawal occurs even as their friends and family plan to celebrate the couple's one-year anniversary together. Guest Gary Seligman, RN, tries mushrooms from a food platter anonymously sent as a gift and soon dies from respiratory shock.

Evelyn believes the poisonous mushrooms were intended for her to sample, especially since she received a threatening note just a few weeks before Gary's death. Phil admits that a former patient has recently been stalking him. At first, Evelyn feels the woman wants her out of the way so she can attain her obsession, Phil. However, new evidence points towards Gary being the actual target by a criminal who will kill Evelyn and her cohorts to keep his identity quiet.

Leah Ruth Robinson is renowned for her entertaining medical thrillers. Her trademark, similar to that of Patricia Cornwell, is to leave readers feeling they are visiting old friends as characters return in new story lines. The lead couple is a delightful pair, especially Evelyn. UNNATURAL CAUSES is a winning medical thriller that will leave readers wanting more tales starring effervescent Evelyn.

Unusual Medical Thriller
Not a run of the mill medical thriller. The main character's frequent introspection's makes for an interesting flow in the story line. Good character definition and well plotted mystery make this a fast and entertaining read.

Good Characters
I really hope that we see a lot more books with Evelyn Sutcliffe as the main character...I liked this book because I found myself really liking the "villian" before we knew he was the villian!...OOPS! ...This didnt get 5 stars because the plot wasn't a five star plot, it was pretty basic, not alot of twists and turns but did keep the pages turning towards the end. I don't like Phil and I don't know why...Evelyn needs a new man.!

Psychological thriller that is a great prequel to First Cut

Evelyn Sutcliffe is a second year emergency resident at University Hospital where she shares a deep relationship with a psychiatrist. Evelyn should be a happy person, but the idyllic picture conceals a confused, anxiety-laden woman.. Her lover freely boasts that he is seeing another woman. While Evelyn is on duty, a close friend, Dr. Shelley Reinish, is rushed to ER, but dies within an hour.

Her colleagues, friends, and the police believe that an overdose caused the death. However, Evelyn cannot accept that her vivacious friend would commit suicide. There are too many unanswered questions so the doctor decides to do a bit of sleuthing. However, the facts she learns about Shelley makes Evelyn wonder if she ever truly knew the deceased. As she peels away the layers to Shelley's inner core, Evelyn places herself in danger of joining her friend in the afterlife.

Fans who enjoy action thrillers or works of psychological suspense need to read BLOOD RUN. In reality, this novel is more a coming of age tale of a woman struggling with many flaws and fears. This mainstream flavored novel is a prequel to Leah Ruth Anderson's best seller FIRST CUT, making it a must read for fans of Dr. Sutcliffe.

Couldn't get into this one
This one started out OK, but I gave up after about 70 pages. I had a hard time following this book because there was just so much going on that had little or nothing to do with the main storyline. I became bored with this story and gave up. I may try to read this author again if I can find her books at a used bookstore.

Killer on Loose in NY Hospital
I chose First Cut because it was a Literary Guild Selection. It turned out to be a disappointing choice for me. The author is obviously knowledgable about hospitals and medical terminology, but it was overdone and overwritten. The pace was frantic and I doubt any human could realistically continue to function as our protagonist, Ev, did in thise book. She is a resident who is a combination flawless physician, marvelous teacher, excellent detective, and sexually appealing to all men in this book. That is just too much woman for me. I began skimming about l/3 way through this tome and was relieved to finish. The lengthly explanation by our heroine of how, why and by whom the crimes were committed was just more (pun intended) overkill.

Fast paced and un-put-downable...
An amazingly good medical thriller. I love a heroine like Ev...strong, sexy, funny. I highly recommend the first novel in the series, Blood Run.
