Dazzle 'Em With Style: The Art of Oral Scientific Presentation
Published in Paperback by W H Freeman & Co (1994)

Must read for Ph.D. students!
There are many fine books that cover presentation skills. However, there are far fewer books that cover this topic as it specifically relates to graduate science research. Robert Anholt has done a wonderful job in this regard. Furthermore, this book has received rave reviews from many Ph.D.s with whom we have talked.

required reading
We use this book in a seminar course for seniors majoring in chemistry. When I first saw it, I realized that it neatly summarized everything I had learned about giving an effective presentation. I think it's a great resource for science professionals and students

I dazzled (thanks to this book)
Anholt covers everything you need to know about making a good scientific presentation (in any discipline)- how to structure a talk, how to present your data (on slides or overhead transparencies), how to use body language, how to answer audience questions. He illustrates his tips with real-life examples (photos and drawings) and amusing anecdotes, so you can see the logic behind his suggestions and know what to avoid doing too. The section on poster presentations was very helpful-- it includes a drawing of a real poster so that you can see an example of a good layout. The book is well-organized, easy to follow, and has really helped me avoid so many of the pitfalls that commonly plague science presentations.

Family History
John Stands in Timber is my daughter's great-grandfather on her father's side. I am purchasing this book to let her know the history she shares as a Northern Cheyenne and to show her how much her great-grandfather cared about his people. I have read the book previously and appreciated the sense of cultural awareness John portrayed through his words. It is a lesson for us all to remember where we came from and appreciate how we got where we are now. I would recommend reading this book, to learn the history of the people and to appreciate that he wasn't just a historian, but a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather and also a good person.

A Cheyenne Chronicle
The Cheyenne was undoubtably one of the most remarkable tribes of the Great Plains. Now you can have a very convenient one volume tribal history of them by John Stands In Timber with the help of anthropologist Margot Liberty. Stands In Timber,an old time Cheyenne, in his whole life collected the memories of his elders about the history of their Nation and he succeeded in editing it to a narrative from the creation to the reservation times. The effort of the author is of a rare kind and the result is also a rare one: you can learn the history of a native nation from the inside.

More copies of this book should be printed
This is a wonderful book, it has changed my life, I wish I had it 20 years ago. It's sad that it's out of print, the publisher should print more...

Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma

THE trauma set to own
Don't bother with the 7-volume set by the same author. It covers too many subjects in not enough detail. THIS is THE trauma set to own for the practicing OMF surgeon and residents. There is hardly a question not answered within these large texts. Surgical anatomy is reviewed, the pictures are excellent, it is well written, and it is current. It is a book that you should acquire as one of your first titles while an OMF resident. Useful for ENT and Plastics, as well, but really covers the discipline of OMFS trauma nicely.

1991 Ed. Recommended by the Medical Library Association.
The Previous editon (1991) was recommended in "A Basic List of Recommended Books and Journals for Support of Clinical Dentistry in a Nondental Library" in Bulletin Of the Medical Library Association, July 1997.

Experienced Accounts Not Found In General Histories.
This is a group of personal narratives of veterans of the US Navy Amphibious Force of WW II. These are the bluejackets who stood up under fire in the assault waves carrying the soldiers to the beach and without hesitation went back for more. This has the kind of first hand detail seldom found elsewhere or in news accounts on how it actually was to trim ship, beach, and handle the Landing Ship, Tank (LST) and the small ones which they carried along. LCVPs, LCVP(R), the Higgins boats so highly praised by Eisenhower, that were developed by the Marine Corps for beach assault. (see my review of a book on the Marine subject). These sailors picked up their LSTs just downstream from Pittsburgh, Pa, sailed down the Missisippi and then to Britain. After the Normandy invasion many LSTs went to Italy and North Africa for the Southern France invasion. Then some went around to the Pacific and landed at Leyte, Luzon, and Okinawa, and went to China after the war. All of this at sea in a high sided, flat-bottomed slow tub which rolled even in a calm sea. One narrative covers the Rhine crossing where they trucked LCMs across Belgium and France into Germany to carry troops across and then helped put up the pontoon bridges on which the Army crossed. This is one small part of the huge story of how the personal effort of millions combined with industrial might and training and organization to enable the United States to project its national power clear across the world. Nothing like it has been seen since. Even the great British Navy had to be equipped with US landing craft and ships as they could not turn them out in the needed quantities.

Great first hand knowlege
I agree with the authors review. They always tell the story of the Army or the Marines after they land on the beaches, but little has been written in book or script form as to how the Hell they got to the beach's and crossed rivers. Mr Witter is to be commended on collecting and publishing the Naval Amphibious Force side of the story. They have been ignored for to long.

MOST WONDERFUL BOOK OUT OF PRINT
I stumbled upon this book, in a japanese bookstore in N.Y., several years ago. Only now, that the common mortal cannot buy it, I fully realize how lucky and well directed my compulsion to buy books was, in that instance. An excellent travelling companion, this anthology of japanese folk zen sayings has never let me down, in times of trouble, sorrow and joy.
This is an outstanding compilation, by Zen scholar Soiku Shigematsu, of japanese tanka (five lines), haiku (three)and dodoitsu (four) mostly from the Zenrin Segoshu, a handbook compiled in japanese by Zen masters to meet the demands of those Zen students that found the Zenrin Kushu difficult to read, because it was written in Chinese. It must be remembered that the classical study of koan in the Renzai Zen monasteries required students to dwell in jakugo or capping phrase exercises. Once the first phase of the koan analysis is over, the student must pick a capping phrase from thousands of poems in a special anthology (the only book allowed in the meditation hall), that best expresses the mental and physical state reached by him through meditation. This exercise
of course leads to the study of all the poems in the anthology and therefore expands the students knowledge and understanding of the Zen culture and classic texts.
In order to give an idea of the poems that this book contains and to promote a new printing of it, here are some of the jewels from this paper box:

There seems,
But there's never:
Moon in the water.
-------------
"There is", someone says,
And we stick to that "there is."
See there's nothing-
Only the sound
Of the pine wind from the beach.
---------------
Since legendary times,
Nothing has changed:
Running water and the love
Between woman and man.
-------------
In the dark
I lost sight of
My shadow;
I've found it again
By the fire I lit.
--------
Little clear streams rustle
Down through the mountain rocks
And finally let the battleship
Float on the sea.

THIS BOOK MUST BE REPRINTED FOR THE DELIGHT OF COMMON FOLKS AND POETRY FANS.

Best Zen book to take when stranded on a desert island..
The night before I found this book I had a dream about it... A mentor of mine who died two years before was in the dream and he showed it to me and I think he said to read it or he had read it... The next day I saw it at a half price book store... It caught my eye because the cover was the same as in the dream.. When I read the introduction it said this was the same book Zen monks must memorize and always have a copy of in their pocket... Upon reading the book I thought it was excellent..!! I forgot all about why I picked it up... I think I must have read it three times... Like a block head I traded it in at a used book store for beer money and thought it would be easy to find somewhere else... Now it's out of print... and I'm still looking for it...sigh..

Blaeser adds continuity and coherence to the Vizenor canon.

For students of Native American Literature puzzled by Gerald Vizenor, perhaps the most important--but often the most difficult--Native writer, Blaeser's book is long-awaited and highly recommended.

Blaeser shows how Vizenor's prose, oftentimes cryptic and fraught with neologisms, parallels influences that come from his interest in Chippewa oral tradition and haiku. She explains how Vizenor's concept of "word cinemas," for example, stimulates the reader into active thought. Vizenor's prose leaves a great deal unsaid and unfinished, and it is up to the reader to participate in the production of ideas Vizenor introduces.

Finally, Blaeser shows how Vizenor's prose is most effective in dismantling stereotypes regarding Native identity; by creating an active relationship with the reader, the reader's conception of "Indianness" becomes a dynamic, continually changing process, never static.

For a critical study of this type, Blaeser's book is well-written and not difficult reading. This study is highly recommended, and readers who are interested in Gerald Vizenor and Native American Literature and culture will find this book essential
