A fun little book!
This is a fun book to take on a car trip. It has some puzzles that involve math (you know- car A leaves going 60 mph, car B leaves going 30 mph, that sort of thing). Some don't involve math (my personal favorite) such as "name 10 cities with over 1 million people each that start with the letter M (one city per country)".

if you like this sort of thing, you will enjoy the book.

Save your money
I purchased this book as a gift for my mother-in-law, a retired judge. It is fortunate I previewed the book before I sent it on, or she would have sentenced me to the workhouse. This book is an absolute waste of time and money.

The author apparently collected statutes from a variety of sources, and spends 90 pages usually listing one sentence summaries with no reference and little organization. Examples from this book include:

"In Marblehead, Mass., it is illegal to cross the street on Sunday, unless it is absolutely necessary."

"In Atlanta, it is against the law to secure a giraffe to a telephone pole or a street lamp."

And it goes on and on. Forget about this book, and save your money.

Law-makers: Lighten Up!
Not a law book, not a reference...Just a reminder that when it comes to making the rules, it's easy to get carried away!

With election season upon us, it's good to be reminded that it's possible to look pretty silly when you try to regulate everybody's behavior all the time.

This is a book just for fun, filled with humorous illustrations.
Send a copy to your favorite politician!

Sad
If this book really does cost what it says it does, then the editorial review is less than useless. It's sad. Hey, I understand your stock prices are dropping, but don't start loosing the quality.

Content issues
My high school history class uses this book, and I'm very disappointed with it. I have not noticed any outright mistakes, but the authors tend to imply things that aren't quite true. Take one of their statements from a chapter on the presidency: "Despite their unhappy experience with George III, the creators of the American political system perceived the need for a single person to serve as both the symbol and the leader of the new nation, and so they created the presidency" (87). They go on to talk about the powers granted the president by the Constitution, conveniently ignoring the Articles of Confederation. This type of oversight is common in the book, as are the poor placement and the overuse of footnotes. And the authors' use of exclamation points is amusing. ("Ford had not even been elected vice president but had been appointed to the office by the now deposed Nixon less than a year earlier to replace Spiro T. Agnew, who had been forced to resign when evidence emerged that he had taken illegal payoffs while vice president!" (89).)

As a high school student, I am certainly not qualified to judge this book. When a person as unschooled as I catches problems with a book, however, I worry that there are other problems--deeper problems--that slip by unnoticed.
