Elegant and harsh, Larkin cuts to the essentials
I had the unique privilege of studying with Ms. Larkin last year, as a senior in college, but I had never read any of her work until I purchsed this collection, and was immediately blown away by her mastery of lyric form and cruel truth-telling. This is not a book for the faint of heart, since Larkin explores such timely issues as a loved one who is dying of AIDS, and the loss of lovers and stability in an ever-complicated world. She knows initmately how to break a scene down to its component parts and let you see, touch, smell, hear and feel what she examines with such precision. If you're an old poetry fan, or are dipping your toes into the genre for the first time, this is an excellent example of what is true and good in modern urban poetry.

Grace and strength in the face of loss and challenge
I can add little to what others have said here. Joan Larkin brings to bear the entire weight of her experiences of loss, as well as those of joy in self-definition and the quest for a community.

I had the great fortune to work in a year-long conference course with Joan at Sarah Lawrence College. As a teacher she possesses the same qualities in evidence in COLD RIVER: honesty, courage, and a deep respect for life's lessons. Buy this book!!!

Extremely honest
Joan Rivers did a fabulous job with this. She was extremely honest in her descriptions with show business and describes the "business" of it so openly. Her vulnerability and strength are intertwined so vividly. She is funny,honest,intelligent,good-hearted and insecure as most, but brave enough to admit it. I would highly recommend the audiotape and book as well. It is a great tool for anyone dealing with the emotional aspects of show business rejections. Joan Rivers proves that not only has she been a survivor thru tremendous hardships, but that she is indeed a fragile, yet strong human being. The audio makes for great listening for days stuck in traffic jams.

Joan Rivers-What a book!
Joan Rivers book-"Enter talking" was a really good book and introduced em to details about her life as a child and her personally.. It felt like i was sitting there-listening to Joan talk/. I think this is a really good book and i think many people would enjoy it.

Funny, Sad, Inspirational
This is one honest book! Regardless of how you feel about Joan Rivers (I happen to like her), there's no denying that she's been through hell and bounced back more times than most people. Filled with lots of funny anecdotes of behind-the-scenes Hollywood. Read this book!

Joan is on Top of the World because of Fat Liz
This book is great. It gives you a inside look into the rise and fall of Joan River's career, and how she got herself back together again after being fired from Fox, and her husband Edgar, ending his life, while she was getting plastic surgery. Its also great to read about the different Stars.Joan talks about the late Michael Landon, and how mean he was to her while she was sitting in for Johnny Carson, and her on going fight with Victoria Principal. There's alot of funny jokes, especially the Liz Taylor one's.I think Joan was the main reason Liz got herself together in the 80's,and looked better than ever.Joan also talks about her childhood, and her rise to fame. If you like Joan Rivers humor, you will enjoy "Still Talking."

Praise for "Chicago from the River"
Imagine yourself lazily drifting down a placid river on a perfect summer afternoon, flanked on both sides by towering monuments erected by the architechtural geniuses of the ninteenth and twentieth centuries, their long shadows passing over you like the ghosts of the men themselves who labored over the planning, design, building, and occupation of these priceless pieces of history.

The sounds of the City surround you and the voice of your guide is almost an aria illuminating the stories behind the breathtaking views of some of the greatest architectural accomplishments of our time in the greatest city of all time...Chicago, Illinois.

Ms.Lindsay's knowlege and enthusiasm, not only of the architechtural importance of the buildings that line Chicago's famous River, but also for the nuances of their unique stories, their histories, and the personalities of the men who created them is contageous. Before you realize it, you are a convert to the wonder of this place and the energies and drives that built it up on the praire.

Ms. Lindsay captures the experience in "Chicago on the River", through breathtaking photographs which she took over the course of the thousands of trips she has made from the mouth of the River to the south end of the city and back, while illulminating and entertaining many many thousands and bringing to them her appreciation for this unique viewpoint.

Read the book and then take the tour...experience the world's greatest city from a truly unique point of view!

Great intro to comediennes
I used this as a textbook for a film class I taught last year and the class loved it. The book contains solid biographical information and it's really fun to read. Plus, author Horowitz offers some very perceptive insights into women's comedy. My only criticism is that footnotes would have been really helpful because the students wanted to follow up on some of the sources -- but overall I highly recommend it.

Very Interesting
I really enjoyed watching Kathy Levine on QVC. I was interested in what she had to say by reading some of the reviews. I purchased this book and couldn't put it down. She talks about behind the scenes of QVC and the Jeff & Judy Crowell saga. I never knew about those two. I think you will get a good kick out of this book. You can see Kathy on HSN now, but not as a host but a vendor with her own clothing line.

Diva Delight
You really have to be a fan of QVC, America's leading retail broadcasting network, to appreciate this book. And if you are, you will! Within these pages, The Diva of Diamonique reveals everything! Secrets, desires, hopes and regrets. It's all here. If you watch QVC, you don't want to miss this book.

How she can keep her hands off that impossibly handsome Dan Huges is simply beyond me! He makes my morning every single day! With his Morning Show, at 7 p.m. EST.

Kathy's book is a real joy to read! Although most of us will ever get the chance to meet Kathy in person, this book offers us a personal look into her life.

As a Proud Gay Man, I am not ashamed to admit that Kathy is a role-model for me. And my dream is to someday meet her. And maybe then she will introduce me to that hunk, Dan Hughes!!!

An Honest view of Life and how to laugh at it.
Kathy tells all from grade school to nose jobs, from failures to success. I've read this book three times and love every minute.

A passion for jewelry design
Joan Rivers is one of America's most successful comedians (a tough field for a woman, as being funny and being ladylike would seem to be mutually exclusive.) Ms. Rivers has always been a fan of high fashion. Her late husband Edgar indulged her love of designer jewelry such as Faberge's, but not content to merely own such works of art, Rivers started her own costume jewelry line inspired by Russian pieces, Edwardian, Victorian and modern classics.

The book contains a section on the major designers like Faberge and Cartier, a section on the reproductions in the Rivers line compared to their original versions, and one about the process by which costume jewelry is made, from artist's model to casting pot metal, electroplating and setting rhinestones. The book is well-photographed and should be of interest to anyone who collects costume jewelry, whether from Rivers' own line or vintage pieces of other makes.

Joan Rivers Jewelry fans will love this book! :)
Joan's book has lots of beautiful photos of her classics collection jewelry from the first 5 years. Her book explains how she got started with QVC & why she decided to create the jewelry, how the jewelry is made, where she got her inspiration for her classics collection jewelry, personal stories & information about her favorite jewelry designers & stores. It's a fun book that is a very easy read with lots of beautiful photos. If you collect Joan's jewelry like I do you'll love seeing all the different pieces of jewelry she did in the early years. It's great to see jewelry pieces I have & other items from that year's collection. This book was well worth the price!

lot of good ideas here...and funny, too
enjoyed reading this book. felt like joan rivers was talking directly to me. my only regret: wish there had been more examples for guys. (it is written, it seems, mostly for women--though it is applicable to either sex.)

Great Advice
Joan Rivers has her fans. And she has her detractors as well. Yet not even her detractors can deny that she is an honest, gutsy lady who doesn't miss a trick, who took every lemon that life tossed at her and squeezed it until it became a delicious lemonade.

As with her earlier books, DON'T COUNT THE CANDLES is written in her typical breezy style, with plenty of laughs thrown in for no extra charge. That's what this book is, too: a charge. Rare will be the reader who fails to be both enlightened and refreshed by Joan's entertaining outlook on life. For her fans, this one's a must.

Can we talk? Joan's latest book is fabulous in every way!
Reading "Don't Count the Candles. . ." is like having Joan Rivers talking directly to the reader--as an old (but fighting it every step of the way) friend. Her honest, shoot from the hip (liposuctioned, of course) game plan and advice is well-written and is done so with Joan's typical humor and wit. I'm buying a copy for all my friends and even my ex-mother-in-law! Go Joan! Keep up the great fight!
