Estrogen and Breast Cancer: A Warning to Women
Published in Hardcover by Hunter House (1996)
Author: Carol Ann Rinzler
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Brilliant and prophetic
I bought this book when it first came out in 1993, and everything journalist Carol Ann Rinzler said then has now become accepted by the top medical researchers. Estrogen (especially when combined with progestin) DOES cause breast cancer, and the supposed benefits of estrogens for preventing heart disease are now being hotly debated. The HERS study (the first big randomized controlled trial on women with heart disease)actually found women had more heart attacks during the first year than women not on HRT. If you still have any doubt that estrogen causes breast cancer, READ THIS BOOK. Only when we're fully informed can women make clear-headed decisions about whether or not to take estrogen drugs for the rest of our lives.

Good case re estrogen causing increase in breast cancer
An good example of, I have no conflict of interest, journalism. Ms. Rinzler has done her homework. She makes a sound case for the idea that the exponential increase in Breast Cancer is mostly the result of the massive introduction of estrogen into women's lives. Birth Control Pills, Hormone Replacement Therapy, DES and more, are all clearly implicated. Why then do they continue to be sold, with ever increasing favor? Why is this being denied/ignored? Why is this just shuffled off as a factor to consider? Why has this book received so little attention? Women should read, study and meditate on this book. Take it to heart. Ask yourself these questions. A fine example of excellent journalism, well written, staight foward and easy to read

A comprehensive index enables quick and easy referencing
The New Complete Book Of Herbs, Spices, & Condiments: A Nutritional, Medical, And Culinary Guide presents a new, unique, and comprehensive way of approaching herbs and condiments as individual health products. Included is specific information for each plant or item. The "reader friendly" format is one of a guide presented alphabetically and all entries are completely up-to-date. Each entry includes basic information abut the plant or item including its origins and what parts are used as food or drink; a nutritional profile; how it is used as flavoring; how it affect the body (including benefits, adverse effects, and plant/drug interactions); how to use the plant in preparing food, around the house, in the garden, or as a home remedy; and significant, new information for women who are pregnant or nursing. The text is enhanced with extensive appendices listing plans and condiments used only in medicine, as well as those hazardous to health. A comprehensive index enables quick and easy referencing. The New Complete Book Of Herbs, Spices, & Condiments is an important and core addition to any alternative medicine, personal, family, or community library reference collection.

Fascinating, if a bit out of date
First published in 1979, Carol Ann Rinzler's "Dictionary of Medical Folklore" provides a nearly complete collection of our medical myths, beliefs, and delusions, from acne to zinc oxide. Often, they are fascinating. For instance, most people have read a mystery in which a corpse's nails keep growing after death; according to Rinzler, that's absolutely false: the cuticles shrink, making the nails merely look longer. I was also pleased to learn that chocolate does not cause acne, which would have made my adolescence a little less argumentative. There are a few items that have become outdated as medical research rolls on, but on the whole, this is a worthwhile book to have in your library, to help answer trivia questions or do research for stories.

Overall a good resource
Weight Loss Kit for Dummies is an overall good starting resource. The book covers a lot of ground. It doesn't get too technical and seems to be pretty update on what is going on. There a lot website references in the book to help learn more. The book covers fad diets, several of the commercial weight loss program like Jenny Craig and how they work, the high protein diet, the high fiber diet, and the high carb diet. There is also a pretty good section on nutrition. I do have to say that after following the advice in this book I am losing weight.

A great book for those who wish to create their own diets
This book title may be misleading, as it is not for dummies, it is for those who know little about nutrition but wish to know more It is highly informative, covering all aspects of nutrition, including vitamins, minerals, etc. that are stored in the body as well as those are not. Examples are given for foods that promote good health with plenty of references and studies that back up these claims. The digestive system is explained to give a very good and necessary knowledge of how foods are metabolized in the body. Scientific names are given, always with the layman's term or at least a thorough explanation. Plenty of websites are given for further reference. I highly recommend this book for those who wish to further their knowledge of nutrition. An excellent companion book, which is almost completely a very thorough list of food values and little else is 'Bowes And Church's Food Values of Portionz Commonly Used'.

Lots of food for thoughts here
Like any book of the Dummies series, this book provides a lot of information, and establishes a strong foundation in an incredibly complex and confusing field. I am a big fan of the Dummies series. Thanks to them, I learned a varied set of skills including EXCEL software, Chess, and cooking. But, nutrition is far more confusing than a user friendly software program.

This book gives you all the basics you need to know about nutrition. This includes a good description of the macro nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats). The author even describes their respective chemical molecular compositions. Coverage of micro nutrients (vitamins, minerals) is just as good. This book gives you the information so you will eat healthily, understand what you eat, and what are your eating requirements. It is just like an excellent textbook for a college level course on nutrition. Except, as all Dummies book, it is a lot funnier and user friendly to read and extract the information than a college textbook.

Brain author laudes excellent write, well documented.
Many of the diet books and even the how-to books on health are lousy. Some of the dummies books are great, most are good, and some are just OK. This one is superb. Gives the lay person a view of nutrition that is lacking in our public education system and which is sorely needed. Nutrition is so important. Your diet is probably the single area of life which you can influence you future health and well being second only to quitting smoking and attitude. I recommend this book whole heartedly and with my "whole brain"...best, Kenneth Giuffre MD, author "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain", career press 1999.
