Fun way to learn history
When I ordered this book, I thought it was a short textual history of the assasination of President James Garfield. It turns out that this book is in comic book format with the story being told by dialogue and cartoon illustrations. However, I really enjoyed the book and learned a lot about Garfield, his assasin, Charles Guiteau, and Garfield's slow death.

Guiteau was basically a loser in life and had even served time in jail. He was constantly skipping out on creditors and and he showed signs of mental illness. He was dillusional and thought that Garfield would apppoint him to an ambassadorship. He literally stalked both Garfield and Secretary of State Blaine in an attempt to secure the appointment. When it was not forthcoming, he stalked Garfield (this was in the days before the secret service) until he had the opportunity to shoot the President.

The wound caused a rupture in an artery but an aneurism sealed off the opening so he did not bleed to death. Garfield lingered for many weeks until the aneurism ultimately ruptured and Garfield died. The location of the bullet had not been located and the aneurism had gone untreated. Today, Garfield's condition would have almost certainly been diagnosed through an MRI and he may have survived delicate surgery which would have saved his life.

In reading history, we generally get a line or two about Garfield being assasinated by a "disappointed office seeker." It was enjoyable to learn more about this event, particularly in such an unusual literary format.

A true eye-opener....
As a history buff, and a fan of Rick Geary's, I knew I'd enjoy this book, but I had no idea how much! The book tells the paralell stories of President James A. Garfield and his stalker (and eventual assassin) Charles Giteau, an abysmal failure in every aspect of life; indeed, his ONLY success in life was the murder of President Garfield, and he almost botched that up, too. Garfield lingered for months after the attack, dying perhaps more as a result of medical incompetence than Giteau's efforts.
Geary's wonderfully cartoony art is reminiscent of claymation; it gives a true illusion of depth and form. He is truly one of the underrated geniuses of the Comic art form. His meticulous research gives us many interesting facts, such as The President being allowed to walk around Washington D.C. unescorted (No Secret Service yet), Abraham Lincoln's son's association with Garfield, and too many others to count. Do yourself a favor- read the book!!

Excellent introduction to this little-remembered event
This entry in Rick Geary's series on Victorian murders examines the assassination of President James Garfield by Charles J. Guiteau, a megalomaniacal failure at preaching, the law, and almost everything else he had tried. The drawings are evocative of the time and place, and give a clear idea of the events. The lives of Garfield and Guiteau are traced, and Guiteau's mental illness is made quite clear; today, he would almost certainly be sharing a room with John Hinckley. I'd like to see this whole series reprinted: one of them is out of print and apparently unavailable.

Star Wars Masters Of Teras Kasi is the best!
Star Wars Masters Of Teras Kasi is the only 3d fighting game to own! It has everything you need! Trust me on this one, if you are unsure whether or not to buy this game then, PURCHASE IT! It is the best of the best of 3d fighting games! It is not lame as though Mortal Kombat is because of the so many a year but Masters is one that you'll never get tired of! If you're a true Star Wars Fan, then you need to own this game because if you don't, then you won't know what you are missing!

Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi is a Must Have!
This game delivers that distinctive "Star Wars flavor" often missing in most of the other games licensed by Lucasfilm. There's alot of moves and diversity with the gameplay, which is an interesting cross-breed of Tekken and Soul Blade. The visuals are graphically stunning, with fluid animation and fascinating backgrounds taken straight from the films. The sound effects are explosively accurate and the soundtrack is pure John Williams. As an added bonus, the game features some hidden characters which were derived from popular works of Star Wars fiction. Like Mara Jade from Timothy Zahn's novels, and the bounty hunter Jodo Kast! Aside from Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, make this an addition to your Star Wars collection. Oh, and the guide by Anthony James which delineates all of the various maneuvers and combos can be helpful for new players too!

Good for all ages
This inspiring and fun-to-read book profiles 23 Ohioans who have exhibited outstanding character and courage. Some are quite famous, others not at all. Among the famous are the Wright Brothers, Tecumseh, Harriett Beecher Stowe, Toni Morrison, and Jesse Owens. Among the not-so-famous, but should be, are Jacob Parrott, Mary Ann Bickerdyke and Janarius MacGahan.

I put this book at the top of my Christmas giving list for these reasons: 1. All the stories make you appreciate the sacrifices and character of the individuals profiled ("Could I ever be that brave?"). 2. All the stories are well-researched. I thought I knew about all there was interesting to know about some of these Ohioans, but the book taught me otherwise. 3. It's written in story-telling fashion, making for a good read-aloud book for the family and an interesting read for the junior and senior high school set. 4. It well represents the diverse interests and ethnic backgrounds of Ohioans.

a clear answer to many broken lives for recovery
I am very impressed with both the brevity and clarity that this little book brings to some of the most difficult cases of abuse we handle. The book is both a clear and concise description of the true Christian lifestyle but also a manual for minister and abused alike. Major topics we continually use during ministry from the book are Maturity Levels, Fear and Love Bonding, Types of Trauma, Healing in Community, and Spiritual Adoption. Our organization, The Dwelling Place, gives a copy of this book to each man visiting us for ministry. (We minister to men, women and children dealing with the results of many forms of abuse.)

Highly recommended for multiple reads...

One of the best literary magazines around
Open City consistently publishes great stories, poems, essays, and artwork. I look forward to each issue, because each one is so different, and because this magazine continues to be vital and relevant, esp. because many literary magazines are so staid and dull....

THE must buy
I'll be sincere, I wasn't very impressed by Unknown Armies.
Yes, it was a good book and wasn't expensive, but after tons os modern-conspirational-supernatural-horror-RPG, the things that made UA shine didn't justfy all the hype for me.
But the sourcebooks are another matter.
I would call most of them masterpieces and the ones not included at this category, just great.
I would rate Weep in the first category.
It's not just a adventure module but a book full of ideas, inspirations if you mind, that can put a SOUL not just in UA, but in any other similar RPG setting.
If I have any complains about this book is:
* They are so good thay I just can't decide which one use first.
* Now I MUST buy the next UA sourcebook "Ascension of the Magdalene"
Thank you for all the people of Atlas Games.

The finest Titanic pictures anywhere, all in one deluxe book
Having been a"Titanic Buff" since 1969, I never then could have imagined that someday I would have in my hands these absolutely breathtaking views of Titanic,so many, one better than the next, and all in one volume. It is one of my dreams come true.Ken is very gifted, and anyone interested in Titanic, would be thrilled to have this in their collection. I would like to say to Ken,if he should ever read this:"Thank you for bringing Titanic back to life."Go buy this book...it is one you will look at for years to come......Tom Smith

A Titanic must-have
Ken Marschall has become the definitive artist of the Titanic, and his art has the reality of the photographs we so often lack. This book includes much of his Titanic work, including his very first painting of the great ship, and as a bonus includes some of his other liner artwork, of the Lusitania, Mauretania, Queen Mary, Normandie, and the Andrea Doria, as well as Titanic's two sisters Olympic and Britannic. The Titanic was simply the most beautiful ocean liner ever built - her lines are absolutely perfect - and Marschall captures her with love and respect. Very highly recommended.

A Must for Any Titanic Library
I discovered this wonderful book at a Titanic Historical Society convention and it is one of my most prized possessions of all my books on the subject. Ken Marschall is not only a foremost Titanic historian, but a maritime artist of great talent. Like many, he fell in love with Titanic legend as a child and his passion for art soon combined with his passion for the "unsinkable" ship. This book is a presentation of his love, from art he did as a young boy, to his later paintings. There is art of Titanic in her moments of grand triumph when she was the "ship of dreams" -- and then heartwrenching ones of her in her final moments that freezing April night. We see detailed, haunting Marschall works of how she is now in a watery grave, based on photographs taken by Dr. Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who discovered the wreck site in 1985. Near the book's end, however, is one of my favorite Marschall drawings, one of a scene that never happened, a beautiful Titanic entering New York harbor as her maiden voyage ends. This alone is worth the price of this magnificent book that belongs in any Titanic buff's library.

The Heart of a Soldeir
Outstanding read! Given their incredible life stories, I couldn't believe I had never heard of either Rick Rescorla or Dan Hill prior to reading this book. Mr. Stewart has done a great thing bringing their story to the public. It appears to be a fitting tribute to these two warriors....I couldn't put it down. My heart goes out to Susan Rescorla, along with my compliments for her touching testimonial to her husband in the Epilogue.

He answered the call - what an example for us.
We have all seen and been deeply affected by the pages and pages of short biographies (and pictures) of those who perished on September 11, 2001 in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and aboard the hijacked planes. This wonderful book is about one of those people, his best friend, David Hill, and his last wife and soul-mate, Susan.

I didn't know the name of Rick Rescorla, although I have since found that I have a friend who fought with him at Ia Drang and thinks highly of him. When I heard the news stories describing a man who had been a hero in that battle and then died saving others on 9/11 I wanted to read more about him. I think you not only enjoy this book, you will be moved by his story.

It isn't a fairy tale, but it reads like one. Here is a poor kid from Cornwall, UK who heads to Africa to fight, becomes friends with an American soldier. He then joins the US Army, fights in Vietnam, becomes a US citizen. His life ends in the fall of the South Tower.

Mr. Rescorla's life, like ours, had its peaks and valleys. He was a hero, no doubt about it. But he also had parts of his life that didn't work out as well as he had hoped with ordinary failings (again, just like us). The difference is, that when the call came, he heard the call to duty, and putting others first, went back into the building when he could have gotten out. In doing so, he perished. As you read this book it will be clear why.

What is especially nice about this book is that the reason you will know why he tried to save others isn't a comic book version of heroism. It isn't just Mr. Rescorla's nobility and intrinsic heroism, though there is plenty of that in my view. It also came out of his own sense of who he was and his sense of what he needed to do.

He likely wouldn't have survived even if he had "lived". If those he was charged with protecting perished it would have been nearly impossible for him to live with that. He had to try and save them just as he had done in other places and in other times. What was an amazing man.

Mr. Stewart always writes well. I especially like the way he talks about the heroic, the ordinary, and the whacky in elegant and clear prose. He doesn't cue how you are supposed to feel about this or that aspect of Mr. Rescorla's life or the lives of his friends and family. Mr. Stewart tells the story and its internal power communicates through the author's effective prose.

Pointing out Mr. Rescorla's heroism doesn't in any way detract from the hundreds of heros who gave their lives that day also trying to save others. This story just makes one of those heros more real for those of us who weren't directly involved.

This is a story you will not want to put down.

Surprising and very good
When I picked this book up, I was in a mood to read everything I cound about September 11. I was surprised by this one, though. Rick Rescorla plays a part in the tragedy, but the book is really about his amazing life leading up to September 11. A fascinating read, but not for the reasons I thought when I first got it. I kept turning to my wife saying, "I'm on page 100 and Sept. 11 still isn't mentioned..." or "Now I'm on page 200 and Sept. 11 still isn't mentioned."

Fans of James Stewart will not be disappointed. The rest of you will not be either. A highly engrossing read about Rescorla -- soldier, father, husband, Englishman, American, etc. -- and the people around him.
