This is one of the best histories written on the practitioners of Western Esoteric Occultism at the turn of the century. Richardson does and admirable job of introducing the Seymour/Hartley diaries and includes some never before published G.D. meditations.

R.C. Richardson has done all students of the English Civil War a great favor. As hotly debated as the U.S. Civil War, this book surveys the historiography (i.e. the history of the history of the "variously explained" - English Civil War, English Revolution, Puritan Revolution, Great Rebellion) of this transformative 17th century event from the 17th to the 20th century. Richardson frames his analysis in the context that "at no point since 1640 has consensus characterized historical writing on this subject." (p. 240) Highly recommended for any student of British history.

This volume contains parts of Richardson's work on international conflict that did not make it into the books published posthumously in the 1960s _Statistics on Deadle Quarrels_ and _Arms of Insecurity_, including a number of shorter communications and debates. Richardson's work looks quite different from contemporary research on conflict within and among states, but much of it still makes for fascinating reading.
