People who like to COUNT?!? People who like hard-core math.
There was an earier review that claimed this book is for "people who like to count." That's a little silly. This book is a rigorous math text. And it's glorious. It's probably my favorite text. But it's not light reading at all.

I spent a semester actively reading and working on this book with my advisor. I read this book and worked on research, 50/50 split on my time. I got through 2.5 of the 4 chapters, and I'm damn proud of myself. It's a great book, but if you didn't know that 'enumerative' was for "people who like to count", you probably want a different text.

A Classic!
This book is a must for anyone who likes how to count. In addition to the superb exposition of deep and important mathematics, it contains so many intriguing problems, some of them even puzzle-like. Read this book cover-to-cover or open it at a random page. Either way you would love it!

Extremely handy and interesting to read.
A great book for those who want to spend a few months covering the entire region. Though a few geographical and historical errors are there, the good tips and listings give a great start for the intrepid traveler.

An excellent broad look of E. Europe
I am stationed in Germany and therefore have the opportunity to travel frequently throughout E. Europe. For several years now I have been looking for a travel guide that offers detailed travel info as well as historical and regional information. I finally found it all in Lonely Planet's E. Europe. Although it was an older version (1995) with often outdated prices, it provided an excellent source of maps, key sights, as well as a good, country-by-country historical brief. This book was so good, in fact, that someone in Ljubljana, Slovenia, decided they needed it more than I did, forcing me to buy the latest edition. I'm looking forward to seeing this updated edition.

THE best set of technical references in this area
In my 25 years of semiconductor process development I have never come across such a complete and in-depth collection of device and process knowledge in a single place. Years ago we needed to spend many hours with the journals to extract the requisite information to supplement our laboratory efforts. These volumes synthesize the basics with the most modern techniques now employed in advanced technologies. In addition, many subtle processing difficulties are addressed as well which will be much appreciated by the researcher. Through the years I have purchased in excess of 100 text references and none comes as close to these in the total knowledge contained within. These volumes are intended for the researchers and engineers working in this field yet they are so very well written and easy to comprehend that any one with such an interest in this field can understand them. Study these volumes completely.

Silicon Processing for the VLSI Era
This book provides an outstanding presentation of Silicon processing technology that is technically current, rich in detail, and most importantly, factually correct. The new edition of this book appears to have been completely rewritten, and covers every important area of Silicon processing in a comprehensive manner. I especially enjoyed that fact that in each chapter of the book the basic principles underlying a technology are explained first, and these explanations are then integrated into descriptions of the relevant technology (i.e. PVD, CVD, CMP etc.).

The two Lithography sections are beautifully done, and contain lucid explanations of concepts that I have not seen anywhere else.

For anyone who is seriously interested in semiconductor manufacturing, this book is a "must have". No other volume even comes close to being this comprehensive.

Birmingham Horrors

The Birmingham Horrors
This is a very interesting little book. It relates the story of a nightmare of domestic murder that took place in Birmingham, Alabama in 1888. Without editorializing, it presents the environment, and the characters in a way that puts the reader right into the picture.

The author of this book gives names, places, landmarks, etc. in a clinical way. He quotes the newspaper articles, magazine articles, and court testamony in a seemingly accurate manner. If there is any criticism at all, it could be in the way in which he sometimes quotes the black dialect, and sometimes does not. Since he is inconsistent in this, it would have been better if he had left out dialectic quotes all together. However, this is such a small (equivocal) error, compared to his overall accomplishment, perhaps it should not even be mentioned.

I am particularly interested in his method of factual documented presentation because I live in Birmingham and identify with much of the data he presents. If one likes true crime, presented comprehensively, objectively, with reserved sentiment, he will like this book.

Useful tool.
The issue addressed here has created much pain and disorganization in families. The book's importance lies in the authors' unique and excellent insights into the internal dynamics of individuals involved in substance abuse, and how those personal dynamics lock them into old and unfulfillable expectations. For anyone involved in treating the abuser, it provides critical guildelines for successful intervention.

Great Drawings and Illustrations from Punch, 1841-1901: 192 Works by Leech, Keene, Du Maurier, May and 21 Others.

The artists of "Punch" tell the story of Victorian England
"Punch," also known as "The London Charivari" began as an imitation of the French satirical periodical "L'Assiette au Beurre" and became a British institution. This volume, edited by Stanley Appelbaum and Richard Kelly, reproduces 192 choice illustrations by over two-dozen staff and guest artists from the first half-century of the magazine's history. Obviously 1841-1901 is basically the reign of Queen Victoria, which means artists like "Alfred Crowquil", George du Maurier, Linley Sambourne, and Sir John Tenniel. Most of the drawings, which are arranged alphabetically by artist, were engraved on wood by "Punch" graver Joseph Swain. They were chosen primarily for their graphic quality, although Victorian society, politics, personalities, and fashion are portrayed as well. The drawings are dated along with an introduction and the volume begins with biographical entries about the artist. Several drawings have accompanying scraps of verse or satirical commentary. You will also find the familiar faces of Mr. Punch along with John Bull (and his American counterpart Brother Jonathan). When it comes to capturing the culture and politics of Victorian England, there is nothing superior to "Punch." True, the specific historical references will be lost on most of us, but reading between the lines you will still understand the gist of the barbs. There are more subtleties here than we find with contemporary American editorial cartoons, but that just underscores the significant differences in time and place. Whether you are a student of the Age of Victoria in English history or a fan of magazine illustrations, this collection of "Punch" drawings and illustrations.

The Wars of Watergate: The Last Crisis of Richard Nixon
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (1990)
Author: Stanley I. Kutler

Used price: $10.00
Collectible price: $10.59

The most comprehensive Watergate compilation
The Watergate break-in and coverup scandal that toppled the presidential administration of Richard Nixon is, maybe arguably, one of American history's watershed events. Why is clearly explained by Richard Kutler in his historically rich book that is very probably the most comprehensive and easily understood publication on the subject. Kutler begins with the approval by the president's men of the break-in at the headquarters in the Watergate complex of the National Democratic Committee and, after the plot's five burglars are nabbed, the conspiracy to cover up the involvement of the White House in the break-in. Kutler is rightly clear in pressing the point that there has never been any evidence that Nixon himself approved the break-in (that was OKed by the president's operatives). But, just six days after the June 17, 1972, break-in, Nixon ordered the coverup in the now infamous smoking gun taped conversation with chief of staff H.R. Haldeman. From the apprehension of the break-in's participants, Kutler takes us to the Senate investigative committee that gradually chipped away to lead to the articles of impeachment that were being advanced but not forwarded to the House because of Nixon's resignation. The number of participants in the Watergate affair is sheer numbing, but Kutler does a tremendous job in not getting his reader too bogged down in trying to keep the cast straight. In the end, though, the historical value of Kutler's contribution is why Watergate essentially redefined the presidency, how it altered the American public's perception of the nation's highest office and why and how the built-in safeguards against a tyrannical presidency worked. As for Nixon, it goes without saying he was a truly tragic figures whose pettiness sabotaged what could likely have been one of the most effective presidential administrations in history. Kutler concludes with a tantalizing question: assuming that Nixon did, to some extent, rehabilitate his public image in the years before his death, was that rehabilitation due to the fallen president's changing his character's fatal flaws, or was it because he simply out-lived most of what he called his "enemies?" All this and more in one of the most compelling documents in the Watergate fiasco.

Watergate as History
Most books on Watergate were written not long after the scandal broke by either journalists or by the participants. Stanley I. Cutler is one of the first to look at the scandal from a "historical" perspective. He does an excellent job of presenting the events in the proper historical context, removed as they now are from the political passions that bolied over at the time. Nixon then was a discraced figure with a core of ardent supporters. He managed to partly rehabilitate himself before his death by outlasting many of his enemies. This book shows, in all grim detail, why Nixon should never be allowed to complete his quest for rehabilitation. It shows clearly the dangers of electing a President willing and able to deliberately misuse his power.

Outstanding political reporting
This is the clearest, most concise, most accesible book on Watergate I have ever come across. Its most important feature is providing the reader with a deepr understanding of Watergate beyond the mere surface aspects of the cover-up, but instead lets one understand the implications the Nixon Administartions activities had for the nation. At times, the book may seem too partisan, and the large "cast of characters" can be hard to juggle. These minor criticisms aside, it as an important book to read, particlulary for young people in light of the recent Clinton impeachment hearings, so that they may judge for themselves whether or not that scandal in fact had the gravity and import of Watergate.
