Maybury cuts to the heart of what all well-intentioned religions and philosophies have in common with his 17 words: "Do all that you agree to do, and do not encroach upon other persons or their property." I have taught this as a mini-ethics course at my high school- one made up of over 60 ethnicities and nationalities- and all students understand it. Given the recent Florida election law war ,this book serves as a timely reminder that ultimately law must be found not in overly detailed law books, but in people's hearts. This book was recommended to me by author Harold Klemp (Autobiography of a Modern Prophet) who finds these 2 principles useful as an aid to spiritual living. So do I!

This easy-to-read book makes libertarian ideas accessible to any interested high-school or even junior high student. The concepts are simple, but not simplified. Buy it for your kid, or for the neighbor's kid, or for yourself. See other "Uncle Eric" books.

This is one of the very best books I have ever read,one of those that have actually shaped my thinking and that of many others! A book to be put in the not to be missed category! It deals with common law and politics and economy, all unavoidable aspects of our daily life, but most of all it deals with the hidden aspects of two laws, the ramifications of which politicians do not want us to know so we stay under their power. His thinking is so razor edged, one can only be thankful for having been woken from ones slumber.

After reading a few of the other reviews I felt like throwing my 2 cents worth. First of all, I am amazed and love the fact that Diebenkorn has recieved so much press. Its a shame he was shunned from the New York art world when he was alive.(Although, I don't think he was terribly upset by this) I didn't even hear of him untill I went to England to do my M.A.! I bought my first book of his then in 94'. I think its whitechaple press. In any case, this book is much more complete with great- great photos and essays. It is pure joy. The biggest problem I have with the book is trying to keep it out of my studio, so as not to get paint on it. If you happen to go to the San Francisco MOMA check out their nice collection of his work!

For an art lover Diebenkorn has the rare gift of sharing the sensation of painting. Lucious, sensual and pricise color harmonies, and those rythmic intervals. For a european it is another one of those deserving american miracles that such an artist gets a catalog and museum exhibition like this. The text is as precise as Diebenkorns color harmonies, and shows in depth great concern and understanding of his art and time.

Im one of Diebenkorn's fans, and this book is whatever you want if you like colorism, and pure painting! highly recommended!

The best cover artist of all time. No exaggeration. Some of the later work becomes, unfortunately, exceedingly literal--it's as if someone forced Powers to put Boris-Vallejo-like human figures into his abstract scenes in order to satisfy some PR/marketing goal. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

This highly recommended introduction covering the life of the artist Richard Power opens to a full-page color-embellished survey of 120 of the artist's fantasy images and contributions to the world of paperback illustrative art. An outstanding survey of images is created in an excellent keepsake edition for fans of science fiction and fantasy art.

Finally, a book dedicated solely to the works of the late Richard Powers... a dream come true. I was tired of always seeing him presented as one of many entries in books of sci-fi artists, shoved between others who were obviously not as talented as he. This is a true deal.... page after page of his beautiful/haunting/otherworldly art (yes, all 3 adjectives, and more, exist in each painting!). The reproductions are of a very high quality and clarity, some taking up 2 pages, allowing you to see the textures within the images. The text gives some very good insight on Powers' inspirations and personality, with some very funny stories. My only objections are - 1. There are a number of works produced in a fairly small format (4" x 4" or less) , and I would've gladly paid more if the publisher had enlarged them and expanded the page count. 2. No photos of Powers at work, just two self-portraits. 3. The text tends to ramble a bit, especially the first chapter, and I would have loved to see more art in place of it.

If you've read ElfQuest Book 1: Fire and Flight, be prepared to be astounded again. This book is the continuation of the plot of the first book, (indubitably). Within Forbidden Grove, the beginning of the true quest [the first of many of the ElfQuest series] actually begins -- please say "Wow" if you have only read EQ book one thusfar. This novel takes place seven years after the finale of book one, and it opens the saga that eventually lead to the ongoing storyline(s) for the next twenty years. Cutter, leader of the Wolfrider tribe, has found peace and serenity in his new home along with the other members of his tribe (and family, if you haven't yet read book one!). However, there stirs a longing in him, a new "need" to be fulfilled. He sets out, with friend Skywise, into the unexplored direction to find answerss; and unexpected surprises, as their journeyings reveal. While he and Skywise are away, the other members of the tribe are compelled to follow him: one exceptionally intuitive character has overwhelming feelings of doom, ones that the tribe feel can only be quelled by finding and averting Cutter in his path. An excellent, excellent book.

Swinging is fun. I like it. The feel of the wind flowing past your face is indescribable. Pumping your legs to get higher and higher. Sometimes jumping off at the pivotal moment but returning to claim your swing once more. There is nothing like it in this whole big universe. The book was good too.

This is simply an out of print version of book 2. The story-line is the same, but for those hardcore elfquesters out there, it's simply a must have.

This is a most useful, new (year 2000) 164 page, fully illustrated guide to preserving your family treasures. All of the information in this lovely guidebook was approved by a panel of experts. Topics range from protecting photos, film and videos, movies, paintings, clothing, furniture, glassware and musical instruments, to dolls, toys, natural items and military things, and more. The chapters are very concise, yet complete. Instructions are complete, and simple to follow. It even covers security and insurance of items. The time to begin preserving the items is now, and this book really shows you how. Add it to your library.

This book is a treasure and a saviour. I was able to preserve my family heritage using advise and techniques I learned from this book. It describes how to salvage and protect everything from paper items to military mementos. I cannot recommend it enough for anyone who is interested in keeping their family's keepsakes in good shape. Kudos to those who put this book together. It was as if they were talking to me!

This is the best introduction to Buddhism I've seen. It's clear, concise and enjoyable. The graphics are entertaining, as well.

If you want a concise yet accurate summary of the origin and development of Buddhism, this is the book to buy. The text is easy to understand, and the book covers a lot of ground on the subject without using a lot of jargon. The illustrations are vivid and often humorous. A lot of people have misconceptions of what Buddhism really is; this book will help you understand the true spirit of the teachings of Siddhartha. It's a lot different than what you may have thought!

The translation here strays a bit from the original for the sake of making it rhyme. Although this may raise the eyebrows of some purists, I feel that the english version has charms of its own. The design of this book is really outstanding, and the old duo-tone photographs used to illustrate it are quite poetic in their own right, and seem even more so as a result of the way they are combined with the text. The book as a whole evokes images of a lost paradise, which I have never seen expressed so well outside of the writings of Proust. I even like the way it smells! This would make an excellent gift for any lover of poetry or photography.

This book is not only gorgeous to browse through yet exceptionally poetic and useful at the same time. It is a bilingual book- french and english with absolutely fabulous illustrations to aid the imagination. Sucha lovely work and an intriguing way to involve both adults and children into Baudelaire's complex poetry. Well done!

You don't need to have a sophisticated vocabulary to play these games. It's wonderful with children. We play in the car, at the dinner table, as a homework break. This book goes on vacation with us. I highly recommend it!

This book is full of great ways to have fun with the English language. I have used it during my teaching practicum to teach my students (grade 8 & 12) basic poetic terms. The games are great fun and a wonderful way to start class everyday! The kids keep asking for more & I don't think there's anything better than that. Lederer spans the language from sound devices, to metaphors, to names, to language logic. It's one book I wouldn't want to teach without!

You just can't keep a bad Slayer down - not in Sunnydale, at least!

Buffy finds herself up against a body-hopping nightmare with attitude - a single intelligence animating all sorts of evil undead nasties, with a special taste specifically for her and her Scooby Gang. What - or who - could it be? Buffy's best clue should probably be who is suddenly haunting her dreams: Faith the Fallen, still in coma in the hospital, but active as hell on Buffy's psychic psyche. Every time the battle-weary Slayer falls asleep, her arch-nemesis combats Buffy in "Dreamland" - a place Faith has learned to navigate especially well, given the several months she's been in that netherworld between life and death. Which raises the old question as to whether or not, if one dies in a dream, they will also die in real life - but then (so Faith informs her), Buffy is already dead...

Veteran Buffy series writer Jane Espenson penned this little goodie, which heralds the welcome arrival of that great diabolical duo, Faith and the Mayor - yes, the discarnate intelligence stalking the Scoobies is, of course, the Mayor (which is revealed in the opening panels, so I'm not spoiling anything) - to Buffy's comic book adventures. The artwork, in common with all the Buffy graphic novel series, is spotty - sometimes good, sometimes not so good - but the story is strong, and the writing of Faith and especially the Mayor is fabulous. There are also some nice tie-ins between the third and fourth season of the show (when this story is set), bridging the demise of Sunnydale High and Buffy's discovery of the military underground Initiative.

Given that the evil Mayor Wilkins is such a nerd, there's as much humor as horror to this particular story, making it one of the most entertaining the series has to offer. Perhaps his own exit line from Season Three - the best ever, in the show - sums "Haunted" up best: "Well, gosh!"

This serious book about our language,English, the lingua franca of the world, afforded me more laughs than many a so-called comic book. Lederer is truly a master of English, a magister and advocate. I have several other books by him, and have enjoyed each one tremendously. I always have great trouble setting The Miracle of Language down once I open it. I'm always tempted to go through it once more in one sitting. As a writer, editor, and teacher, I refer to it constantly. Now, if only I knew how to get in touch with Lederer ---

Richard Lederer makes the English language so much fun. This is my favorite book of his-- who knew that Shakespeare had made up so many of the words we use every day? I thought it was so great, I sent a copy to my English teacher from high school, who also loved it.

And I happen to know this book is the "favorite child" of this much-published author. I read it with just as much, if not more pleasure than Anguished English and Get Thee to a Punnery, some of Richard's more famous works. Don't expect the usual mad romp through the English language; this book is more literary than light literature.

If you want to improve your writing, you will profit by reading the chapter on the beauty of using short words. The examples of student writings that employ only single syllable words are dazzling.

If you teach English, you might enjoy using some of the student writing examples in your classes to inspire your own students. In fact if you are an English teacher or just a lover of the English language, I don't see how you can be without this book. It is a treasure.
