Cajun Night= Guaranteed Pleaser of All Ages
This book I used in a Christmas theme when I student taught 3rd grade. They absolutley loved it. Not only was it funny but very very well written and entertaining. In fact, when I came back to visit them a week after I left, they made me read it again. Good spinoff of The Night Before Christmas.

Wonderfuly funny!
I read this book every year at our Christmas meeting at work, and everyone loves it!

Fun
This book is a real gem, both for a twist on the usual Christmas story (the paw prints of 8 tiny gators) as well as the regional aspect. It is a hoot to read out loud, to yourself and others!

Great reading, takes you back to the 60's.
Loved the entire book! It was like reliving the 60's with two good friends. I loved the entrepenurial spirit of the young men, and identified with their hard work, troubles and successes. Hope there is a sequel in the works so I will know what happened when they reached California.

Should be required reading about the "60"s.
Modern Cabins is an autobiographical story set against the background of the most exciting decade of our lifetime, "The l960"s" The story of two young men revitalizing a run-down tourist court and gas station. The reader sees how the events, riots, protests, assassinations and political happenings filter down to their lives making them take a stand in everyday life in their attitude towards race and political happening at their local level. You feel their successes as your own. The book reads easily and you get so caught up you don't want to put it down, I read it in one evening. James L. Rice has written a book that should be read by all social-psychology students to see another side to "The 1960s" Truly a gem-five stars--read it.

An interesting piece of American History
A great story about two young men making their way in the 60's. Mr. Rice tells their story of buying a run-down gas station and motel in Kansas City and turning it into a viable business by way of extreme cleverness and hard labor (doing much with little), in spite of many obstacles, as he also parallels the political happenings of the era. You can't help but be drawn into the story, perhaps thinking about what you were doing at the same time, or your feelings as you are drawn back into the 60's race riots, Kennedy's assassination, etc. At times the main characters show much bravery as they defy the accepted attitudes of the time by doing the right thing. An interesting piece of American History. Mr. Rice is a great storyteller.

Great Twist on a Christmas Classic
I am a third-grade teacher, and I loved this story. The chaos that is portrayed on the pages of this delightful picture book is so true regarding what it is like the last few days before Christmas vacation. I especially loved reading about the room mom commandos and the yearly Christmas pageant. I have bought this book as a gift for several of my colleagues who have also thoroughly enjoyed it.

What a find!
I had the pleasure of receiving this book as a gift from not one but two different students ... I read it aloud and fell in love with it. The author is a teacher (no surprise), and I ... met him at a conference! He couldn't have been nicer. I have every intention of giving this book as a gift to my own children's teachers ... If you work in an elementary school or know someone who does, this book is a find. Best of all, the kids think it's hysterical!

A Book School Children and Adults Alike Will Love
Clever illustrations and a humorous storyline make this a must- read Christmas picture book for both children and adults. I am a first-grade teacher, and this book is the story of my life. I read this book to my students, and they could not wait to see what funny incident happened next. They have also asked me to read it to them over and over again. I highly recommend this title.

In praise of the series...,
I have found nearly every book in the "Little Colonel" series, some being first editions. I prefer the older editions, despite the numerous "racial slurs," because they are the product that the author intended to present. I have heard from various sources that the later editions have been revised, removing the colloquiallisms and unifying Lloyd's speech patterns and mannerisms with those of the other characters. I call this a shame. Obviously, no harm was meant by the author when she portrayed the African-American servants as she did, and reading Lloyd say, "...honah," rather than "honor" paints a lot more colorful picture of her character. In rating this series, I must declare it a "must read" for both boys and girls. The morals and lessons are invaluable, and would be a refreshing balm for the wounds today's youth are suffering from, even at the youngest age. I do believe if I had read the tale of "The Three Weavers," as told in "The Little Colonel At Boarding School," MY life would have been touched, sparing me much grief in later years. So, parents, grandparents, caring adults, find these literary jewels and READ them with a child. Their lives and yours will be the richer for it.

sweet stories teaching worthwhile values.
My mother was born in 1896, She read all the Little Colonel books and read them to me. I read them to my children and grandchildren and now have a greatgranddaughter who will get my old old and dearly loved copies. These books teach a love of classics as well as good moral values, plus, providing interesting stories.

A classic series for young readers
I have a complete set of the Little Colonel books that my mother accumulated for me over a period of years in the 1940's, when they were already long out of print. A classic Shirley Temple movie of the late 1930's (I think) was based on the first book, but I enjoyed the later ones even more. I am delighted to see them reissued after all these years. Lloyd Sherman and the other characters introduced in the later books (The Little Colonel's House Party and succeeding titles) were almost as real to me, when I was 8 to 12 years old, as my own friends. My favorite character was not Lloyd herself, who seemed overprivileged and a little too perfect, but Elizabeth Lloyd Lewis (Betty), the daughter of one of Lloyd's mother's girlhood friends. The stories also provide fascinating insights into post-Civil War Southern society.

A charming holiday-themed, full color picture book
Firefighter's Night Before Christmas is a charming holiday-themed, full color picture book story, told in rhyming verse by Kimbra Cutlip (and enhanced with the artwork of James Rice), about a firefighting team who are called away to handle a blaze just moments before a familiar Christmas holiday visitor slips down their chimney and leaves some very special surprises. Firefighter's Night Before Christmas is recommended for any family, school or community library Christmas bookshelf as being a heartwarming and entertaining story celebrating the courage of brave people who serve the public, as well as the manifold joys of the Christmas season.

A Beautiful Book
I read this book and thought that it was absolutely wonderful! The illustrations are not as bright and shiny as I would like but the message shines through. I think that now is even more important to remember the wonderful work of our firefighters. I really think that this will become a holiday fav!

This book was written with belly laughs in mind for the Christmas season. The zany illustrations fit perfectly with the great writing. Kids of all ages will be happy to find this book in their stocking!

The book is well written & fun to read for young & old alike
I bought this book because my family loves the water and boating. The book is well written and fun for all ages. It's a delightful "tall tale" of Christmas on board as told by the salty first mate. I highly recommend "Sailors Night Before Chirstmas" to anyone, young or just young at heart who ever wondered, just how does Santa get to people on boats. Reading this Christmas story just might become one of our family's holiday traditions.

This informative, entertaining book on football is a keeper.
It is rare, and in this case, medium rare, that a youth market book hits the target so perfectly as does "America's Greatest Game". From the dazzling cover illustration to the last page, this brilliantly designed and intelligently written book for kids provides an insightful, original look at the NFL and football. The content is well-organized, the layouts are reader-friendly, and the action photography is the best in the world. Of course, one would expect nothing less than the best from the legends at NFL Properties Publishing Group in L.A., creators of the industry's best football books and magazines. Previous NFLP titles include "75 Seasons" and "Football America"--more evidence of their hard-earned reputation for publishing excellence. This information-packed, entertaining book belongs on the shelf of every kid, boy or girl, who ever wondered about real story behind the NFL, and how the game of football has grown to become America's greatest game.

David Innes returns to Pellucidar for Dian the Beautiful
"Pellucidar" is the second volume in the Pellucidar series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and find our hero David Innes and his scientist friend Abner Perry returning to the inner world. At the end of "At the Earth's Core" the duo had returned to the surface only to discover that Hooja the Sly One has substituted a Mahar, one of the rhamphorhynchus-like sentient reptiles that tyrannized Pellucidar, for Dian the Beautiful, the woman Innes loves. So the plan is to get back down there, rescue Dian, and if time allows end the exploitation of the primitive humans by the evil Mahars. The good news is that Innes returns to the inner world, but the bad news is that he ends up in a different part of Pellucidar where he has no friends and new enemies. This 1923 novel is stanrd ERB adventure, where the hero is separated by circumstances and bad guys from the woman he lives (in fact, it is very reminiscent of "The Gods of Mars," the second John Carter novel). But this is still before ERB was in his potboiler stage where the main game was turning out as many Tarzan novels as possible. What makes Pellucidar a bit different from the rest of the Burroughs fantasy adventures is the unique geography of the inner world and the prominence of smart guy scientist Abner as a supporting character (i.e., the brains of the outfit). If at all possible you want to pick up a copy of "Pellucidar" that has the original illustrations by Illustrated by J. Allen St. John, who remains by favorite ERB artist. The Pellucidar series consists of six stories, including a Tarzan crossover, and continues in "Tanar of Pellucidar," but these first two novels stand alone as

LlamaScout Like Book
Pellucidar continues the tale of David, the lovable protagonist from At The Earth's Core. It tells the story of his return trip to the fabled subterrainian stone-age land known as Pellucidar. Here he must locate old friends, reunite with his lost loved one, and face his all-but-forgotton foes.

Burroughs' writing is simply fabulous, and even makes the characters seem all the more realistic, though many of them are not even human, but sentient creatures who can exist only in the minds of great writers like Burroughs, and in the land known as Pellucidar.

Thrilling Adventures Inside The Hollow Earth
In the incredible world inside the Earth David Innes discovers a new frontier for Mankind. He strove to carve a civilization out of its Stone Age perils. But the kidnapping of the beautiful cave-woman-empress, Dian, made him drop his fight for advancement and enter into a still greater battle against all the primitive monsters of Pellucidar!
