The Gardener's Guide to Growing Hellebores

Wonderful, compulsively readable - the bible of hellebores!
Hellebores are some of the best perennial flowers, blooming especially in the dead of winter, and easy to grow, but American gardeners don't seem to know much about them. Here's the best book on the subject, by wellknown garden writer Graham Rice and plantswoman Liz Strangman, who celebrate an extraordinary variety of types and species.

Beautifully-illustrated (with many excellent group shots of single flowers), the text sparkles (as is Graham Rice's penchant), covering such topics as hybrids in the wild and in gardens, an encyclopedia section of the species, how to breed hellebores, the national collections in britain, cultivation, plant associations, with an entire chapter devoted just to the orientalis hybrids. There's also a chapter devoted to "people and their plants" with such sections as "confessions of a hellebore addict" and "margery fish and hellebores at East Lambrook".

Even though these are British authors, this is an easy book to transpose into American growing, with a chapter devoted to "Hellebores in America".

This is a splendid book, well worth buying.

You'll get hooked!
Warning: if you read -even browse- this book, you're in danger to get hooked to hellebores for life. The authors know what they are writing about, and shovel sage advice in every page. Several expert growers offer also their knowledge. Not to talk about the simply wonderful colour photographs, that will let you dreaming on hellebores for weeks and weeks and... Simply the best book to enter in Hellebore Land.

great gift, reference, and coffee table book
The original edition of this book was out of print for some years and it is delightful to see it out again, and expanded no less. It combines 2 great virtues: highly readable and informative text with illustrations of a quality that are "suitable for framing." It is a great book for anyone who takes an interest in botany, cooking, or gardening and you couldn't go wrong giving it as a gift to one of these types. It's also great for reference. If you're getting it as a gift I suggest ordering 2, because you'll want one for yourself when you see it.

Excellent for learning about food plants from all over.
This book is great for learning to identify food plants from all over the world. The illustrations are realistic and each plant is described. I use it to help my 4-H horticulture judging team prepare for the national judging contest. The plants and illustrations in this new edition are the same as in the original book, however the 1998 edition has an excellent section on phytonutrients.

Not Til I Have Done: A Personal Testimony

A gem of a book
This is a marvelous volume, full of love for her Lord, love for her family, and for her fellow man.

I am preparing to give copies of this book to two people, which is the heartiest recommendation I can think to make.

I am sorry to report that Dr. Achtemeier passed away recently. My wife and I have been blessed to hear her husband, Dr. Paul Achtemeier, teach on the New Testament several times. I would have loved to hear her speak.

Highly recommended.

the heart of a scholar ...
In this brief but full autobiography, Elizabeth Achtemeier brings us full circle from her Oklahoma childhood, her theological education in New York and Germany, her years as wife and mother, and her unplanned vocation in teaching homiletics at a time when women were just beginning to enter the pulpit. Her prose is sharp, witty, but gentle too. Throughout this book, her theme is God's hand on her life, in joys and frustrations.

I especially enjoyed reading how she and her husband met and how their scholarship has complimented, rather than competed against, one another. I also think it is so important for retiring scholars to write such personal accounts, sharing with those who have admired their intellectual prose the humanity from which it stems. It is clear God is "not done" with her yet, noe with any who seek His voice.

Scripturally sound and very helpful for Christian Unions.
Elizabeth Actemeier's study of the Christain Marriage is Scriptually sound and practical for any couple seeking guidance in their relationship. From analyzing traditional roles to the sexual relationship, Actemeier is concerned to maintain Christian integrity in Christian unions. Actemeier describes marriage as an instutuition ordained by God for humans beings, his image bearers, to flourish and imitate the love God has and continues to show to his church and the world. The book holds marriage as a wonderful life and is concerned for the loss of love, respect, kindness and equality in marriages.

A real eye-opener
I was so glad to finally get a chance to read this book. I had heard such good things about it. Modesty is not old fashioned. God intended modesty to be present in all the generations. This book is a call to renew modesty. I have done a lot of research on this subject of modesty and Biblical nakedness and have found this book by Elizabeth Rice Handford to be most helpful. It has encouraged my heart to "stay by the stuff". I recommend this book to anyone who is truly interested in what the Bible (not tradition) has to say about modest dress. But hold on to your hat-it is very eye opening and will leave you with a greater conviction on your part.

Not all garden.
Not all patterns in this book are flowers, there are also woodland animals, lovely wedding pictures/samplers and many large projects that will require some endurance to finish. Afghans, pillows, and smaller items like fruits and vegetables for jar covers and ornaments. If you like nature this is a great pattern book to own. One can easily take out single items from the large patterns to embellish towels or bags. A nice book, typically with the patterns in a small print that will have to be enlarged for easier stitching.

Beyond couscous barley and wild rice
Having already ventured into the world of quinoa, barley and wild rice, this book has helped to move into such unknowns as amaranth, spelt, millet, and others.

This book has two neat features on fold-out flaps on both front inside and back inside covers: the front having a complete chart of correct prep and cook for each grain and the back a delightful small color picture of each with a small summary of its use, benefits, etc.

Additional benefit is rating of each dish along lines of: inexpensive, elegant - for company, savory, unusual, spicy, etc.

Not really exploring all the cookbooks on grains, I got this one real cheap and have been glad to have it around as another resource for exploring this healthy area which is just starting to come into its own. If you can find it also, you'll be blessed.

Inspiring
I do not agree with some other reviews I read here which state that the author is saying to submit yourself into sin if your husband so requires as well as that a wife can't have a direct personal relationship with God because she must go through her husband. The author does not say these things at all. This book is a quick read and full of inspiration for those in good or bad marriages. It clearly shows how submission is not being inferior, but trusting God - just as a man must submit to God and trust Him. In fact, the book clearly states that God would never require us to sin simply in the name of Godly submission to our husbands. This book has completely changed my perspective and shown me how I have been controlling in my marriage, nearly leading to divorce.

Excellent for married woman in a good or bad relationship.
I read this book two years ago. I reread it every now and then. I have used it in my marriage classes. I have purchased over 50 books for others. When I first began to read the book. I had to get a friend to help me through the first chapter. I "WAS" a wife who felt the word submission was sickening. I would always replaced the word submit with desire to please, according to Gen.3:16. It gave me a since of choice and control. After reading this book, I understand that submission is power and freedom. I rejoice in submitting to my husband. By subitting to my husband, I am submitting to God. Submission is Gods perfect will. God changes not, He is the same today yesterday and forever. Others have come back to thanked me for sharing this book. I called the author to personally thank her and encourage her in her ministry to women. This book is a must read for every wife and future bride.

Submission IS for today
I read this book many years ago, and re-read it whenever I find myself having a "pity party" and resenting this or that about my husband. Even today, the God-ordained way of marriage is THE way to a fulfilling relationship. Now, if you chose the wrong man to marry in the first place, not everything is going to be "happy" but that is not what life is about. If you follow God's ways in your marriage, you will be doing your part and the Lord will richly bless you for it. I highly recommend this book for every engaged woman and new bride as well as those looking for a way to enhance their marriage.
