If you had only one weight training book, this should be it!
Rachel's Flex Appeal is the most complete, and awesomely inspiring book on women's bodybuilding! If you want to begin a weight bearing exercise program, this is your guide. Simple, easy to understand, and covers beginning, intermediate, and advanced training techniques. Includes some myths and common questions about women's bodybuilding. The chapter dedicated to bodybuilding nutrition has been so simple and sensible. She even includes some inspirational information on bodybuilding competing. Do not be wary, this is a book for any women who wishes to weight train, regardless of to what level! A+ all the way!

Information and Inspiration
This is a wonderful book for those just getting into weight training, as well as a source of inspiration for those who have been training for years. Rachel not only explains how to train, but why it works and covers everything from exercises to routines to nutrition, as well as sharing a bit of her spiritual philosophy. You won't need a personal trainer after reading this book. An all-around GREAT book and I'm sorry to see it is out of print.

A must have book for aspiring body builders
I also bought this book many years ago and her other book, "Perfect Parts". The books cover everything from diet, training, mental attitude, as well as using great pictures for showing exercise techniques. I want to purchase another Flex Appell. ( I stupidly gave away my original one.)

an ex-player must
This is the second Bill Reynolds book that I have read. Loved them both. I found his descriptions taking me back to high school and the playground. It brought back a lot of memories and also made me think about how I prioritized basketball for so many years.

Non basketball junkies may call Bill's live experiences crazy. I dream of some of his experiences. Great book!

An engaging personal memoir of interest to all ex-jocks.
Bill Reynolds is certainly one of America's finest sports journalists. "Glory Days" addsto that luster. While some may dismiss it as a purely personal account of one's growing up, it is a lot more. It is a book to be read and enjoyed by all former star athletes, high school or college, who realized at some subsequent point in their life that they had to move on but did not want to let go of the one thing that they had worked at while growing up A disclaimer: Bill was a fraternity brother of mine at Brown.

Follow it religiously
If you want to get big, follow everything what this book says, religiously. This is the best book in bodybuilding I read so far. You may also want to read "Arnold's Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding". Another comprehensive although lengthy book. Only read this if you are serious. But for everyone else, Weider's book is fine and to the point. I have been working out for four years now and I must say the most important things about building muscle is not to overdo it, change it up often to trick the muscles, and mentally, think BIG. I believe these are universal points because as you will find out, many muscle building tips are not and are different for everyone.

If you only buy 3 books on bodybuilding, this should be one.
Contains all of the classic excercises and routines. This is a great back-to-basics source and was the source for most of the excercises I used to become huge 12 years ago. After years of neglect I dug it out and started building my routine again (all-natural, this time). There's no substitute for hard work and this book describes correct form and intensification techniques. Combine it with The Complete Book of Abs and Bikram's Beginning Yoga, for a powerhouse workout trio.

Utterly entertaining & heady; just like the music he covers.
Quite possibly the best intellectual analysis of rock ever written. Best, not because of some high-falutin' connection to past ideology or current trends. Rather, the best because it is a series of articles (mostly from Melody Maker) about important artists (My Bloody Valentine, the Pixies, Morrissey, Prince...) by someone who obviously is in love with the music he's disecting. Forget Geil Marcus (too much in love with his ideas), Reynolds is the real deal

After almost 20 years this is still my favorite bodybuilding resource. It has never received a lot of press, but gives better information than most of the books by celebrities.

Good book for female body builders
This book is a thorough approach to women's weightlifting and addresses many relevant topics from safty, where to workout, pregnancy, diet, and complete instruction with pictures on how to perform hundreds of lifts.

Anja Langer includes workout routines for the beginner, intermediate and advanced bodybuilder. Also information on losing body fat, and diets to follow wether your goal is simply to get in better shape, or to become a competitive body builder. This is a guide I turn to whenever I feel like changing my workout routines, and what is best for me at any given time.

A Great Reference
This is the only bodybuilding book I have kept for years.
One of the things I like about it the most is her no nonsense approach to exercising during pregnancy. I also appreciate that she's not as "hard" looking as other women bodybuilders, why this matters, I don't know, maybe she's easier to relate to.

GREAT BOOK THAT HAS BEEN OVERLOOKED!
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is very well put together and informative. I found the advice and the illustrations to be among the finest in any bodybuilding book I have yet seen. Langer gives straightforward information that is practical for any level of fitness. Both men and women can use the advice in this book. It was well worth the price I paid for both my wife and I.

Exceptional ideology for motivating yourself and others.
The age old ideology that our success and happiness ultimately depends on what we think, while obviously nothing that we haven't heard before, is masterfully explained by Coach Pitino in this highly motivational book. The book is full of sound principles that can be used in any walk of life. While the underlying theme that success is a choice is simplistic and easily understandable, actually choosing a positive attitude in your everyday life is one of those things that is easier said than done, and the inspirational stories that Pitino tells from his experiences in the book are fuel for anyone's motivational fire and help make choosing and maintaining the positive attitude that is necessary for success an easier choice to make. I would rate this book right up there with the best self-help books of all time like those by Dale Carnegie and Stephen Covey.

I've read it all before!
They say it takes hearing, seeing or reading something 11times, before it actually sinks in! I liked this book, because itreiterates that the age-old work ethic is alive and well. It professes that anything worth doing is worth doing the best! It's very inspirational to read about how Mr. Pitino was able to motivate with love and not fear-based tactics. I loved the personal stories told about Mr. Pitino in each chapter. The only draw-back I can see to this easy-to-read book, are the many, many basketball stories used as references. I understand that this is Mr. Pitino's world, but for someone that is just a moderate basketball fan, I found myself skimming some parts of the book.

Gives you the chance to make the choices without preeching.
I am an 18 year old high school senior preparing to graduate and go to college. The idea of the "I'm okay, your okay" self help book disgusts me, and that fact made me skeptical to read the book at first. But the attitude presented by Pitino is like no other that I have ever seen. He places a heavy value on being positive and making attainable goals. Pitino makes everybody feel like they are important and will succeed. He never bad mouths or makes you think negatively. Even if you have never followed basketball, this book will help you in ways you may have never thought possible.

Good for solid understanding
Together with Professional C# Web Services, also from Wrox, these books will give you a solid base to really understand Web Services and Remoting. The basics are quite simple but you will also learn some useful advanced topics. I've always liked the Wrox style of writing, I think it's easy to read and follow the code examples. The only criticism is the number of authors. Some smaller parts are repeated and the style is not always consistent.

This book is for EXPERIENCED programmers
I read the book several times. I did some of the examples. The examples worked with no changes necessary. On the [web page], the book has an errata list, which is pretty small. The source code for C# and VB are on the wrox website. This book is for EXPERIENCED programmers. Don't even try to read it if you have no prior knowledge of web services.

The book has an excellent introduction to ASP.NET for web services. It probably is worth just going over the first two chapters to get a flavor of web services. Word of caution, I downloaded the VB samples, and they were a bit buggy. If you are a C# developer, the code in the book was fine. The VB code was not...

Comprehensive coverage
The first few chapters teach you the basics, most of which I knew already, but it is the later chapters which are really great. The chapter on SOAP security (a subject about which I confess I knew very little) taught me everything I am ever likely to need or want to know about that subject. There's also loads of great examples to get you going. To sum up - it's great!

Read Friday Night Lights
Read Friday Night Lights about HS football in Texas. This is a story of a basketball team in Fall River Mass. that follows the same route as Friday Night Lights. It can be boring and long winded. Fall River is dying as a city and the book unfortunately dies pretty near the start.

Basketball Sociology
This is a terrific book. It is well written, has good characters, and explores some interesting cultural topics (high school sports, failing mill towns, youths in America, etc.). Fall River is one of the poorest towns in Massachusetts, but its one saving grace in the early 1990's was its successful basketball team. Life in the town revolved around the team, which provided some hope to some but certainly had negative consequences for many of the athletes and possibly the future of the city. It is a very similar tale to Friday Night Lights, which is probably the best sports book I have read, but is different enough that it is well worth reading. It is also fascinating to read about Chris Herren, who happens to be a classic example of a troubled athlete, before he he made headlines in college and joined the NBA. I really appreciated the focus on the town and the people rather than the actual games, which often dominates books of this genre and just distract from the compelling parts of the book. My only complaints about the book are that it wasn't particularly well edited (I caught several spelling errors that are particularly obnoxious in a mass punlished book, though really don't spoil the story in the slightest) and that it is not quite as detailed as it could have been considering the level of access Reynolds had to the kids and coaches. I would highly recommend this story to anyone and particularly sports fans or people who liked Friday Night Lights.

ONE OF THE GREATEST SPORTS BOOKS I'VE EVER READ!
Fall River Dreams was one of those books you wished would never end! I became immersed in this book, as these characters become a part of you.The star player, living in his brothers'shadow, and the pressure of living up to his legacy of bringing home a state championship. The coach,a legend himself in his hometown, trying to go out with one more championship, and dealing with this 'new breed'of kids. The players, the benchwarmers, and those who seek their own moment of glory. And lastly, the town, that has once seen better days,as it struggles with it's existence all while pinning it's hopes on a High School basketball team, to make it feel that the town still has it's pride, along with their passion for the game! I compare this book to the excellent "Hoop Dreams",as that you both feel for their characters, and find yourself rooting for them. Much has happened to the main character, Chris Herren, from the time Fall River Dreams ends, to the start of his rookie season with the Denver Nuggets. I won't reveal them here. The are documented in excellent articles in author Bill Reynolds column in The Providence Journal. I'm hoping that Mr.Reynolds continues telling us more, with a sequel of the team and the town that captured my heart, soul and passion of hometown sports! This book won't disapoint you!
