An enchanting oldtime favorite for the early reader
This book is the familiar story of the journey of the spunky gingerbread boy and his inevitable demise. Its simplistic language and predictable storyline not only captivate the young reader, but also reinforce the use of necessary first words to build a fluent reading vocabulary. The colorful illustrations further enable the child to use context clues to successfuly match appropriate words to the action of the story. I would highly recommend this title, as well as other Margaret Hillert books as first readers. The Little Cookie will get a child moving in the right direction in a whole language approach to developing reading skills.

How to Read Donald Duck: Imperialist Ideology in the Disney Comic
Published in Paperback by Intl General (1984)
Authors: Ariel Dorfman, Armand Mattelart, and David Kunzle
Amazon base price: $13.95
Collectible price: $30.00
Average review score:

A necessary starting-stone.
Of course, in a vastly changed historical context, bourgeois ideology cannot produce anything approaching the seemingly reactionary facility of the Disney comic (just compare Disney with Buffy, Xena, or other postmodern heroes!). However, anyone trying to understand changes in the ideological outlook of Mass Culture must, of necessity, regard this book as one's unavoidablke starting-stone. That's that.

I Like This For The "Wrong" Reason!
I believe the case made by the authors, that comics were/are among the propaganda mechanisms of the US Gov't. and business interests. Particularly in Central and South America comics were used to communicate an anti-Communist message. However I feel that this is a GOOD thing, while the authors feel otherwise. I hope "our side" in the current War on Terror is even more imaginative and resourceful than the Cold Warrior Comix crew.

Down with Disney!
It just goes to show that even with the economy on a downturn the CEO of Disney walks away with 75 million dollars and gives the employees the dregs of the disney economy. This book is worth buying for it details the enormity of Diney's propaganda campaign to portray the third world as a place to be exploited. I've never saw such outright villainy as is portrayed in this classic by Dorfman. Disney portrays revolutionaries (in their comic strips) as essentially traitors and the reactionaries, and oligarchs as heroes with Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck and company as aiding their crimes.

Very poor book
Donald Read is Reuters' "official" historian. It is clear in this dull and pointless book that being their "pet" is a position that he is completely happy with. Not for him the ivory towers of serious academic research, instead he churns out company ideology intermingled with inconsequential detail. Ever wonder what happens to 2nd rate historians? Well now you know- at least the university system doesn't have to support his banal ponderings. Why on earth a company like Reuters would want to bother with this sort of stuff (or kind of guy) is beyond me.
