I Am Third
I am third
By Gale Sayers

Devon Hurley

My book is called I am third and it's written by Gale Sayers. The price of the book is $...and u can find this book in any book store.
I am third is about the football player gale Sayers .He plays football with his friends every day. He grew up in a poor house with barely any food. That didn't stop him from playing football though. He played no matter what. One time he tried to tackle some one and he got kicked in the mouth and he was spiting out blood his brother played football too. He was older then Gale. Gale was a starter on the high school football team with his brother he only got to play with his brother one season because he was a senior when Gale was a freshman. Gale was a good player. He was like1st or 2nd best in the country. He wanted to go to a four year college to play football. Mississippi State was in other sports besides football like track and basketball. He broke the long jump record for track. His mom and dad were always working on something. Gale's dad was tall and had long legs. His dad worked hard every day and only got 40 dollars a day. His mom was at home watching all the kids. All the kids in the neighbor hood were on the football team. After gale went to college he was going to go to the pros either the chiefs or the bears. on draft day the Chicago bears picked Gale Sayers the first day of summer training he met Brian piccolo. Brian was a white person and Gale was a black person they didn't really get along at first of race but after they started playing together. The coach put them in the same room partner. When gale was voted rookie of the year Brian starts to get sick and has to go to the hospital and he finds out he has cancer and has to stay in the hospital for the rest of the season. Later he goes home and is recovering but he gets cancer again a in his chest and dies from cancer. later gale plays the best game of his career he scores 6 touchdowns.

Awesome Book!!!
This review is on the book called "I Am Third". In this book it tells mostly about Gale Sayers' football career and some of Brian Piccolo's or Pic. The reason this book is called "I Am Third" is because he says that "God is 1st,my friends are 2nd,and I am 3rd". To understand this book you might have to know a little about football. If you like football stories I would reccomend you read "I Am Third".

Great Book and movie, very Moving
I really never liked sports, but this book really moved me because it was a story of two men very different yet very alike. They were both very talented, over the past few months i've been doing so much research and Gale and Brian. I also am planning to do a important report on them, the frienship that they had was great. BUY THIS BOOK!! and the movie Brians song!I loved both. I love Ya Gale and Brian GOD BLESS!

It Works!
This is a great tape, what can I say? It works!!

IF THIS DOESN'T WORK, I DON'T KNOW WHAT WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This tape is extremely good. I can't wait to take a risk.
The tape teaches you to take charge of your life!!!

GO FOR IT!
Henry Ford would have loved "Instant Guts!" He said, "Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right." What a positive and empowering audio. I received "Instant Guts" as a gift, and highly recommend it for friends you know need a little encouragement to grow. Joan Gail Frank obviously understands the frustrations and obstacles--the little things that keep us from doing what we long to accomplish. She also recognizes how the decisions we make to do a thing...or not to...help define who we will become and how we feel about ourselves in this life. Clever, fast-paced, and insightful, "Instant Guts" is absolutely inspiring and whether one is considering a change of jobs...or of hemispheres...there is a universal message in this book: "Go for it!"

Gale Warner Gave Us A Gift
By letting us into her thoughts as she moved from hope to resignation, Gale Warner has allowed us to witness close-up the emotional process of dying. I've read this book over and over, trying to really grasp what it must have been like to have understood, and written "We are entering a new reality" (the time when she recognized and had to fully comprehend that she was not responding, would not recover, and that death was imminent.) Whether or not you share her profound relationship with the natural world, her assertion that she has had sufficient joy and experience in her life really does ring true. I've never read anything quite like this: it is an amazing gift.

an important book
I feel it's a privilege for me to have followed Gale Warner on her journey: What was her journey? A journey we'll all have to embark on, sooner or later (hopefully, later), since we're all going to die. Gale Warner was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 30 and lived 13 more months. In these months, she wrote in her journal about her thoughts, her insights, her struggle, her pain, and finally her acceptance and serenity: But it was never easy, never simple. Gale Warner saw cancer as the ultimate test of her faith (her particular, private sort of faith). She worked and struggled with her own mortality. In her own words-

"Limits. In order to boil water, you must put it in a pot. The pot sets a limit and so does cancer. When you learn you are not immortal, that you may only have a few years to embrace life, you start doing so. The photo of the Earth on my wall shows its beauty- and its limits. It would not be the same if those same colors and swirls were sloshed all over space".

"Dancing at the edge of life" is an important book, because in the end, everybody has to find their own answers or anyway, start asking their own questions. I would recommend this book to anyone and of course, not only to people with cancer. You don't have to get diagnosed with lymphoma to start thinking of the "big" questions, you don't have to wait to have cancer in order to learn how to live.

Another reason that makes this memoir important, is that Gale Warner must have been a very special, intelligent & sensitive person. She had worked as an environmental journalist & was also an accomplished poet. A person that fully embraced life was ultimately able to fully embrace the journey towards death.

Her story teaches us that spiritual awareness is a choice.
Gale Warner's story is positive proof that each of us, if we make a conscious choice, can see and feel the Spirit of God in everything and everyone, in spite of, and especially during, adversity and pain. It is the little moments, Gale's descriptions of that divine CONNECTEDNESS, consistent and enduring, that touches me the most. Her tender, poetic prose allows us to glimpse the radiant, spiritual essence that is the birthright we all share. During these troubled times, the world finds itself somewhat short of role models, but with the loving gift of "Dancing at the Edge of Life," Gale remains a lasting example. In her own words, she was and is "a daughter of the four winds, a child of the moon and rain and sun ... sister of the whale, and the juniper." I suspect that she now shines brightly in the heavens; each person who reads this book will feel the warmth of her glow, and best of all, will want to share it with others.

Very well written
This is an easy to understand book. I learned a great deal from it. The author knows his stuff, and wrote the book so you don't have to have a great deal of knowledge to follow along. I would recommend this to anyone who deals with injuries, or who has an injury or pain and wants to learn more about it.

Invaluable resource guide!
Ben Benjamin has been my favorite bodywork writer for a long time. I read all of his columns in the American Massage Therapy Association Journal. This book has been thoroughly used so that the cover has even fallen off! Keep up the great writing Ben! Having authored "The Healing Art of Sports Massage", I have a specific need to know things for my practice to be successful!

a great reference book
This is a good book if you are experiencing any pain. It will discribe the problem you are having and how to treat it. It could even save you from going to the doctors office and spending unessesary money if you are sure of your problem and can treat it yorself. I enjoy having this book around. It is a good reference book.

Behind the Scenes with Lucy
Jess Oppenheimer, who was a producer of I Love Lucy and wrote many classic episodes, has produced a very enjoyable and engaging behind the scenes look at one of the greatest television shows ever. He provides a lot of insider tidbits on the production of the show and working with the cast. This book would be enjoyed by any fan of the series or of television's golden age. Very entertaining.

"Laughs, Luck...and Lucy" is enjoyable from cover to cover!
"Laughs, Luck...and Lucy" is written by Jess Oppenheimer andhis son, Gregg Oppenheimer. Jess Oppenheimer worked formany of the legends of old time radio, including Fanny Brice, Fred Astaire, and Edgar Bergan and Charlie McCarthy. This book tells of Mr. Oppenheimer's career in writing radio scripts, and specifically deals with his writing for Lucille Ball. He wrote first for her when she performed in "My Favorite Husband," and then he tells about his creation of "I Love Lucy," the television series starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Mr. Oppenheimer not only created the idea for the series, he was also the head writer and producer of the program. Because of his unique inside perspective, Mr. Oppenheimer is able to provide information about Lucy and Desi that no one else could. There are a few things that make this book absolutely unique... Several appendices are included in the book which are very interesting. The first appendix shows an actual script (complete with hand-written changes) that was used during the production of "My Favorite Husband." But, what makes this book fascinating is the fact that a 65-minute audio CD is included, composed of twelve different tracks. The first track is a recording of the presentation of the script for "My Favorite Husband" included in Appendix A of the book. Another real plus for this book is the number of photographs that are included. The photos provide another dimension to this richly-composed book. This book is not only informative, it is very entertaining! Anyone who has ever seen an episode of "I Love Lucy" will want to own this book. It now occupies a prominent place in our family library. "Laughs, Luck...and Lucy" will be read and re-read many times in our home.

Great nostalgic journey to the golden age of radio and t.v.
I Love Lucy - Behind the Scenes is a fabulous look back at the career and antics of one of t.v. and radios funniest ladies. With all of the demoralizing venues on the "boob-tube" today, it is refreshng to recall a time-gone-by when good clean fun could still be funny. Jess and Gregg Oppenheimer have compiled a wonderful memory book of everyone's favorite comidianne. The reader - Larry Dobkin who as I understand it, was a guest actor on several I Love Lucy episodes, delivers this story with the warmth and humor it so deserves. I give this audiobook 5 stars!

Most Of What's Required
Gale provides the better part of what is required to get a sense of the Dada movement. Other books on the subject provide a more concise and readable narrative of the subject, but Gale's book is full of illustrations that offer a good feel for the works created in the various Dada cities and periods. Not definitive, but close enough.

Long live dada, you tiny sandwich elf.
this am a beautiful book, one of the best book of Dada and Surrealism, it. very well writen and it many pictures ^.^ must for any it fan.

Police
R. stood up and looked at the tree. 'Poor thing', he thought, little realising that the tree could sense this, and was currently thinking 'Poor thing' back at him, in tree language. 'This is not the tree we are looking for', said R. to no-one in particular. 'We do not need to uproot this tree', he said. He snapped out of it. The tree had lost the battle of wits. In the distance, a crowd of other trees watched. It was all they could do, really, being trees. He waited. Time passed. J. Gordon fired up the Land Rover. 'Right - I'll stick it into 'low' and just hit the pedal - I don't think we need to do anything smart, or anything. It's a small tree'. J. felt a sense of destiny surge through him. Perhaps, he thought, we should have bought a tractor. None of his friends owned tractors, and he didn't know where to get one from. It wasn't the kind of information they taught in school. Perhaps they taught it in country school, maybe. J. wished he had grown up in the country. It was so very peaceful out here. Not counting the Land Rover, of course. The Land Rover was painted green, though, and J. felt that this counterbalanced its inherent un-natural... ness. Unnatural. Non-naturalness. He thought for a moment. Un-naturalité. Breathe in... 'Hey, guys', he shouted over the din of the engine, although being a modern Land Rover it wasn't all that noisy, as, even though the makers prided (proud?) themselves on being gritty and brutal in the way that 'Taggart' was when Taggart was still in it, they had moved with the times without appearing to pander exclusively to urban customers. Breathe in again. 'Hey guys', J. shouted, 'how do you say it, if something is unnatural, but that's like something that it has as a thing about it?' R. turned from his mental battle of wills with the tree and looked quizzically at J. as if J.'s mouth had just vomited a string of nonsensical blood-stained snot. 'Wha?', he said. 'Wha?' is a bit like 'What?', but with a big bucket of incredulity fed into the mix. 'You heard', said J. R. was puzzled. This kind of question reminded him of the kinds of questions he got at work. Like 'how do you think it would be if... when we introduce some kind of co-branding solution on this channel... any suggestions?' 'Do you... want to know if something... is unnatural?' he offered, tentatively. J. shook his head. 'I know what is unnatural. The Land Rover is unnatural', he shouted. Yes, I know that too, thought R. The British car industry has produced some extremely unnatural products, he thought. Unnatural people make unnatural things. He imagined a factory somewhere in the Midlands, full of human-sized amoebas slaving over a production line to produce a car made out of small metal models of Norman Wisdom. 'Young people like Norman Wisdom. They do. Let's market it as a cute, fun, small car', says the head of the plant, a big transparent blob with a barely-visible black dot where its heart would be if it was a person and not a blob. 'We shall call it the Kingoddingstroke Blechamat -a catchy name, and we will fill it with cyanide, a substance which young people like, and we will sell it for a million billion gazillion pounds in a single shop in the middle of Iceland, but only to five people who we shall choose from a national database of double-agents, and then we shall ask them if they like it, and if they do, we shall take the car back from them, break it, and spray it in a bright yellow colour before throwing it into a hole'. R. used to work in the motor industry, and had bad memories that he was trying to smother. Most of them involved thick-headed people acting as if nothing was wrong, in such an obvious way as to suggest that something was wrong.

'And I want to say that it has 'unnatural' as a property of itself - what kind of thing is that?', said J. again. J. could not understand how anybody could fail to understand this. R. liked trashy Europop records. He had heard that kind of mangled English before in countless up-beat, quirkily-translated lyrics. 'Emotions are vibrations at the speed of light!' he said, smiling inwardly. J. was puzzled. 'What?' This went on for a bit and in the end they never worked out what the other was going on about.

Untangling Bosnia and Hercegovina: A Search for Understanding

A Decent Travel Book
I recently visited Bosnia and I couldn't find any travel books, so I bought this instead. Even though it's not intended as such, it served quite well, at least in terms of giving a history of the situation, and describing the various places.

It's now a few years old, and it could use some updating as the situation has now changed. But in general, a very good read.

Compelling and highly readable
I recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand this very complex and beautiful region of the world.

An amazing snapshot!
This is a very special book. It offers a unique snapshot of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the end of the nineties, at the end of the most difficult decade and at the same time at the beginning of a very long (as Gale Kirking says, maybe even not yet found) road to democracy.

The book is not written for an average reader. In fact, I believe that an average reader would not even finnish it. But it brings a great value to everyone interested in the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the whole region or in the events at the end of the last century. The book is very descriptive and documentary. It has a great historical value. Never more will Bosnia look the same again as pictured in this book. Things are moving very fast in that part of Europe. But if anyone wants to know, what it looked like in 1998 and 1999, it is in Gale's book.

I had the pleasure to work with Gale for several years and I always admired his writting skills. And again, in Untangling Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gale's ability to picture places, people and events is amazing.

Crystallography Made Crystal Clear

Updated for the e-century
The second edition of Crystallography Made Crystal Clear contains many improvements over the first edition, especially regarding the introduction of new graphics technology available to everyone that can view this webpage on the internet. Rhodes especially explains how the PDB file works and how to view it to best suit the individual scientist's purpose.

It is important to note that the book is still far from "crystal clear"! The portion of the book dealing with the physics of x-ray diffraction is very mysterious--definately dig out the old college physics textbook and read about diffraction when you find yourself confused. Also, the mathematics presented in the middle chapters of the book are way beyond the level that biochemists must deal with on a regular basis. An understanding of multi-variable calculus is important for these chapters.

Overall, the book is a must-read for anyone interested in structural biology, with the exception of several chapters regarding the mathematics that can be skimmed over. And the webpage associated with the book is an excellent resource.

"The" clearest one out there....
When it comes to this field of research, you get two types of references: (1) the 2-5 page quick intro that leaves you with the most basic overview of crystallography and (2) the 'hard core' books that go into such detail as to leave you breathless. This book is, in my opinion, the best transition book.

For non-crystallographers, this book will teach enough about crystallography to allow you to read crystal structure articles and understand what is meant by all of the used statistics and such.

For apprentice crystallographers, this is a wonderful intro into the field. Master the book, then move on to harder books to master it.

Highly recommended. I still go back to it, when I teach people, to help me explain in the way that Gale Rhodes does!

A must for anyone interested in protein structure.
A readable overview, superb for getting a feel for how crystallography works and what the results mean. There is also an excellent section on judging the quality of an atomic coordinate file, such as a PDB file you may download. Prof. Rhodes is now completing a second edition.

Debunking the Middle-Class Myth: Why Diverse Schools Are Good for All Kids

Good text for understanding diversity in American schools
Ms. Kugler's text is both inspirational and informative, written in such a way that will help educators, students, parents and others understand and appreciate the diversity of modern American public schools.

A Must Read!
As an educator who has taught in "well-run diverse schools," I am grateful for Ms. Kugler's important book. Not only does she address, head-on, the myths that poison our thinking about today's diverse public schools but she also articulates the truths which ought inform our decisions about our childrens' schooling. Most importantly, she presents powerful models to those of us who would "reap the rich harvest of our diverse schools." Eileen Kugler has done a tremendous service to public education by writing this book.

Just say yes ... to public schools
For anyone interested in the whole debate about public schools vs private schools, this is the book to read. Kugler raises many of the issues/problems surrounding public schools, then thoughtfully and persuasively sheds the myths and makes the case for the rich diversity offered by public school settings. Yes, it's a factual book. But, just as importantly, it's an inspiring story that needs to be shared with parents, educators and policymakers alike. Read it, then help spread its important message: diverse schools are good for all kids, using all kinds of different measures. As a long-time fan of the public schools, I am re-armed and re-energized for the heated debates over this most sensitive topic after having read Debunking the Middle Class Myth.

a good start - but a thorough review is in order
I used this field guide during my recent trip to Kenya and Uganda. Although it is by all means an excellent fieldguide I do have some remarks. A number of the plates contained errors, suggesting the artists didn't see these birds in the field. I realise it is virtually impossible for artists to see all species featured in a book such as this in the field, so that a lot of plates are drawn from skins. It is important however to use skins from the region itself, this may make a lot of difference. We came to the conclusion that for a number of species skins from west Africa were used. Especially the greenbuls had some misleading plates. For a number of species the Kenyan Zimmerman-book is probably better, although those plates lack in other respects.
In addition a number of the maps were incorrect, especially for Uganda.
Still, if you go to the region for birding, make sure to get this book, because it is definitely the best field guide around.

The perfect field guide!
This book really sets a very high standard and we can only hope other parts of the world's tropics will get similar guides in due time. The plates are just about as superb as one could possibly wish for. When you compare this book with the new field guides that have recently come out for South America, it seems like there are two worlds! Just compare the flamingos, the osprey, or the parrots with the pictures you find in "The Field Guide to the Birds of Peru" and you know what I mean! There is also an excellent lay-out, with helpful concise text and useful range maps all neatly placed together. And the book is still amazingly compact.

Fabulous new East African bird book.
After years of having one of the world's worst bird books, East Africa now has two of the best. The Zimmerman/Turner book on Kenya and Northern Tanzania, the work of 30 years, set a new standard of scholarship and illustration. This book draws on that one, but is even better for the tourist and field birder. It covers all of Uganda and Tanzania, as well as Rwanda and Burundi. It is smaller and lighter to carry. And the illustrations and their placement in related groups on the same page are simply outstanding. This is one of the best bird books in the world and will dominate the market for years to come.
