For years I've lived off a library copy of this book, endlessly renewing it because I could not find one in the store. Radnoti was no less than a revelation to me, and each time I return to him I am duly "blown away" by his versatitility, his deep sense of dimension and impressions. His is a twilight world, but one filled with love, light, friendship and wanderlust. George Emery's translation, although a bit conservative, is still powerful and like a mountain stream towards evening. Miklos Radnoti lived before the war and died at too young an age by violence. Some of his most brilliant poetry was found in the notebook he kept up to his death. It is a pity that such a strong writer is not well known in English. He has certainly influenced me and been a teacher to me. His writing has both encouraged me and given me solace. Avant, Miklos Radnoti!
