Joyce's Dublin Through the Eye of a Fellow Dubliner
Edward Quinn author and photographer captures the everyday life of the people in the same manner as James Joyce himself. Quinn uses a reporter style collecting in his images what Joyce called 'epiphanies'. Quinn roamed day until dusk not only caught notings of words and phrases, he caught the incidents of the way the Irish live and the atomsphere of the places as Joyce saw it. Selected writings from Joyce's works, 'Dubliners', 'Ulysses' 'A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man' 'Finnegan's Wake' and the autobiography 'Stephen Hero' creates a spiritual manifestation of Quinn's photographs. The book also commerates the annual Bloomsday to celebrate Joyce's memory and his contribution to his Ireland he wrote about.

Thorough, Comprehensive, Relevant, Excellent!
Hans Kung writes as one thoroughly committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. However, unlike some Christian writers, Kung writes with an intellectual depth and honesty that is refreshing. Kung does not shy away from bringing the Christian message into a living dialogue with modern scholarship, the other world religions, and the real challenges facing the human race today. I take issue with his sometimes-unconditional acceptance of higher Biblical criticism. However, as a Christian, I contend that Kung provides a true, relevant, and comprehensive analysis of the Christian faith for our time. A must-read for any serious theologian!

A challenging book for an atheist such as myself
Kung writes very well and made me think a great deal. He opened my mind to seeing christianity in ways I hadn't thought of before. I liked this book a great deal-the author comes across as a deeply caring man of great humanity. While I am still an atheist, this book made me stop and think very respectfully about what was written. Convincing? Not quite. Moving? Yes.

Küng gives the Christian faith some modern zeal
Küng is an amazing author and his perspective is quite envigorating. I came across this book during a time in my life when I was about to give up my Christian faith. It brought me into a fresh, living perspective and out of narrow fundamentalism once and for all. Though in his examination of Jesus' time, he tends to be too stereotypical in typecasting groups in the Jesus' time, it is an amazing paradigm to view Jesus from. I would criticize the overly eschatalogical vision he has of Jesus that he seems to get from Schweitzer. Lastly, his understanding of being a Christian as being radically human is beautiful and moving.

Photography as art
The fine black and white photography of Edward Weston is featured in this oversized book and is one of those books to viewed over and over. The book also has an extremely satisfying text that highlights some of the phases of his career. The essays lend insight into the man. Of particular interest was the indication that Weston saw his photographic art in the same light as some of the famous Mexican artists of the time like, Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and others. He strived to have his art looked at in the same light as those in other mediums. He was drawn to these artists, their culture and their works. The after effects of the Mexican revolution, transformed into a cultural renaissance was his palette. Also discussed was his mingling with artists of his times and his reciprocal affect on fellow photographic artist Tina Mondotti. Weston saw and recognized the art in the everyday lives of the the people, heightened during festivals, especially of a religious nature. He particualrly liked the pulquerias. He also was intrigued by the folk art created by common artisans and captured these elements with his lens. Although the book is not limited to his Mexican phase, I found this part of particular interest. There are also paintings that were done by his contemporaries with parallels drawn to his work. His nudes are an exquisite honor to the female body and all it's wonderful curves. There are plenty of nudes featured as this must have been one of his favortie subjects. The early works are featured but his later works are amazing. After 1927 his sojourn to California and his studies of natural forms at the beach and in the sand dunes resulted in some phenomenal images. Also his ability to see erotic imagery in fruit forms is inspiring. If you like the visual arts you will love the works of this master photographer. A great gift book for the camera buff in your life.

beautifully printed - nicely selected works
The show for which this book is the catalog was at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston during May of 2000. As a graduate student at Boston University studying photography I found this book to be wonderful - it is beautifully printed, and the scholarship that went into the text and editing really offer insight and context for Weston's photography. He is most well known for works like the one which appears on the cover, but the book includes earlier and later works, and discuss how they relate to the famous ones. Weston was active in the first part of the 20th century, and most of the works in this show were taken in California and Mexico. His photography is beautiful and rich and this book would help novice and connoisseur alike appreciate it more.

Very scholarly, yet accessable
I haven't read this book in over 10 years (it is next on my "reread list"), but it impacted me greatly. I disagree with Kung on several points, specifically that atheists tend towards nihilism, or that atheism IS nihilism. Kung seems to think that by destroying nihilism (as a valid philosophical conclusion) he has also destroyed atheism, which is a patently silly idea and one of the few dogmatic positions that Kung has.

What I got out of the book is that Kung thinks that God probably exists. I disagree with this conclusion because I feel that Kung actually shows that God probably does not, which is where I stand on the matter.

(I sincerely hope that I am not thinking of a similar book by a different author haha that would be embarrassing).

UPDATE: When I originally read this book in the late 1980s, I also read about 5 books on the same subject by authors from all colors of the religious spectrum. I have recently re-read the book, as I said I would above and I confess that I did in fact have this book confused with another similar book, but only on the point I made in the first paragraph (about nihilism).

I must let the second paragraph stand. I did remember correctly that although Kung showed why all of the philosophical arguments for the existance of god fail, he later does a meta-analysis of the arguments where he says that although individually they fail, taken together they show that there is probably a god. Like I mentioned before I think Kung drew the wrong conclusion from this line of reasoning, for I think that he actually show that there is probably not. Regardless of where I stand on the issue, I believe that the very last sentence of this book should have read: "So, DOES God exist? Most likely not."

The book is not nearly as accessable as I remembered. In fact, without a background in philosophy, this book might not make much sense, although a first year philosophy student would make short work of it and even a "philosophy for idiots" type book would probably be sufficient.

Liberal and comprehensive...
This is a very thorough, comprehensive book. It is at times prolix - but this usually only serves to help you remember most of what he says. He does not however say that atheists tend towards nihilism. He is very liberal and completely unbiased, being careful to always give both sides of the argument even when one side seems rediculous. Perhaps mr mcduffie was reading the wrong book. If you want to acquire a thorough understanding of the evolution of modern thought, the basic histroy of the theology of the church and the arguments for and against God, i do not know of a better book to read than this one.

Comprehensive Intellectual Tome
This is probaly the best book I have ever read. The scholarship is peerless. Important thinkers from Nietzsche to Einstein are explicated. It is an exhuative anlysis combining theology, psychology and theology. After reading it and understanding it one has a new context and breadth of understanding to exameine the question proposed. Agnostic, believer alike will benefit from this book that every intellectual should read.

Freud and the Problem of God

Average review score:

An Important Note on this book
I mean by 'three star' not its content, but design. Anyone considering to buy this book (esp. looking over catalog by online or offline) should note that this does not contain any new contents in comparable with 'Does God Exist?'(1978) Part C-3, which is practically identical with the main body. What's new in material is only his speech "Religion: Final Taboo?" delivered on the occasion of the acceptance of 'the Osacr Pfister Prize'(1986: = pp.123-161 in this volume - less than 40 pages!), which is very doubtful if there is any significant change of viewpoint on the subject in it. I strongly urge you should avoid this book if you already have 'Does God Exist?' except you want to collect the author's archives as many as possible. Of Course, *Good choice* to those who are interested only in the subject of 'Freud's view of religion' and its criticism from Christianity itself.

Balanced and friendly critique of Freud
Hans Kung, a Catholic theologian, pays a tribute to Freud and his groundbreaking discoveries, such as theories of libido and human unconscious. But he questions the popular view that Freud was an atheist and did not have a place for religious ideas in the scientific movement that he originated - psychoanalysis. He fights Freud's views of religion as a complex that needs to be treated. Moreover, he argues that although Freud seems outwardly an atheist, but nevertheless his negative experiences with religion, however much they discredit for him Christianity, need not have shaken Freud's Jewish faith in God. This is good and balanced work. A must read for everyone interested in Freudian psychoanalysis, Jungian psychology and spirituality.
