For the trainer, the dolphin enthusiast, or both!
As someone who has loved dolphins her entire life (when I was little I wanted to be a dolphin trainer), this book intrigued me just because it was about dolphins and written by a dolphin trainer. I was pleasantly surprised on how much I was actually able to learn by reading it. Not only is it a great wealth of information about cetaceans (dolphins), it is also a very interesting read on training. It is full of anecdotes, making the book entertaining, and scientific data and fact, helping to lend a bit of seriousness. The unique training ideas that Karen Pryor discovered by trial and error can be, and are, used on every animal from a dolphin to a cat to a human. I highly recommend this book.

Great book-a must have!
This book provided a great insider's look to what is means to be a dolphin/marine mammal trainer. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering this for a career path. I know I am and that this book has helped me gained a great perspective and tips on dolphin training. The stories are really touching and before you know it, you're feel like standing right next to the author feeding and playing with the dolphins. This book is a definite must-have!

Most Fun and Information Book
This book was great!!! Karen Pryor is a great writer and a wonderful scientist!!! I have never read a more inciting book! It was great, it gave me different perspectives on dolphin training and even some insight on careers!! Buy this book, you won't regret it!!

Neat little book
My dogs are both clicker fanatics, but my kitties were left out of the fun. Who knew that after only a few sessions with the clicker, my cats' recall would be more reliable than my dogs'?

These exercises are simple, clearly explained and fun. All of us who live with cats should have a copy!

Karen's Done It Again
All cat owners should read this book! Just a few minutes a day with Karen's methods and you can cure all the behavior problems you have with your cat!. Clearly and entertainingly written.

Just as importantly, cats need the emotional enrichment and stimulation that using clicker training provides. And its great fun with endless possibilities. A lifelong tool kit. We know a child who has clicker trained her cat to skateboard.

PS You can purchase the book or buy the Clicker Training for Cats Kit ...

Click To Win: Clicker Training for the Show Ring
I just received the new book by Karen Pryor, Click to Win! It's great! It's about clicker training dogs for the show ring, but everything in there can be applied to horses. It's very concise and gives lists of Tips for Getting Started, Targeting, Getting Rid of Unwanted Behaviors, Shaping, etc. I love the part where she talks about judging and all things being equal, showmanship can win the ribbon. You can teach your dog to take the stack on his own and then give the judge an "adoring" look. Too cool! My favorite part was about breeders who are clicker training their litters from birth. Some breeders offer replacement guarantees for animals that don't work out. The breeders who are CT'ing litters and offering replacement guarantees have had their replacement numbers dropped to zero!

The Best Book on Dolphins
In all my reading on cetaceans, this is by far the most comprehensive, science-oriented book I've ever found. Ms. Pryor and the late Dr. Norris are both among the most highly qualified people on the planet to write (and edit a book) about dolphins, and both contribute their own chapters to this wonderful compendium of research from experts in a number of fields. Subjects covered are diverse, and encompass many topics I had not seen in other books, such as analysis of teeth as an indicator of age and wellness, the behavior of dolphins inside tuna nets, an in-depth analysis of feeding and hunting strategies, and many other intriguing facets of cetacean behavior.
This book is a "must-read" for anyone who wants to separate fact from myth and become better grounded in scientific cetacean studies.

How to Teach Your Dog to Play Frisbee

Excellent resource for training dogs.
I enjoyed Karen Pryor's direct, simple approach to teaching my dog to play frisbee. She has many tips on training in general written in an easy reading style. The best part is-- her advice works! My yorkie is already retrieving the frisbee and can hardly wait to play with it. I checked this book out at the library and decided I need a copy for myself!

One of Wylie's best efforts on the world of sport fishing.
Phil Wylie was a marvelous fisherman and he delighted in sharing the sport with his readers. Wylie never received the recognition he deserved as an author and it is hoped that more of his titles will be reprinted for a new generation. His humanity shines throught on every page he ever wrote.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book!
I don't fish. But the short stories told in this book are great. If you enjoy great writing and stories with good overtones, then you'll enjoy this book. First read it when I was about 15. I still pick it up and read it at least once every year. I'm mid-40s now.

Set in the 30s and 40s, these short stories chronicle the working lives of two charter boat sport fishermen and their customers who sail out of a Miami, Florida fishing dock.

A great perspective on life in those times and better days in this country. A feel good book even for someone who isn't a feel good kinda guy. I'd loan you my copy, but I don't want to part with it. A book I'd want my kids and their kids to read.

Filled with many personalities and twists, but always with a good ending.

Fantastic!
I love this book! Each short story holds your absolute attention, not only for the great fishing, but also the entertaining life lessons each new character brings. You don't have to be interested in fishing to like Crunch & Des, but if you are, you'll appreciate it all the more. I highly recommend this book. I'm buying copies for friends.

full of facts and help
This book isn't sweet. It isn't cute. And the font isn't easiest on the eyes. But it's full of facts and help - information I haven't found in any of the other breastfeeding books. The information is given straightforwardly (although certainly biased in favor of breastfeeding - although that's what the books' about, isn't it?), with a great deal of scientific research included. If you're in the market for a non-sentimental informationally based book, this is the one for you. The book also includes practical tips for breastfeeding - how to increase milk supply, use a pump, etc. - all found in other books, but without the sentimental goop that's often found in other books. I would have rated this book higher, but the size of the book (small paperback) and the font doesn't make for the best reading experience.

This book is as good today as when I first read it in 1966!
I first read Karen Pryor's book while I was expecting my first child. There were very few books on nursing at that time. There weren't too many of us nursing mothers, either. This book was wonderful - full of info, but also inspirational. I gave it to other moms-to-be who were looking for support to breastfeed back then. Recently, when my daughter became pregnant with her first child, I came to Amazon just to see if was still available, more of a nostalgia trip. Not only did I find it, but I found that Karen's baby, like mine, had grown up and updated the book with precisely the info my daughter would be seeking about breastfeeding and working. Needless to say, I ordered it, re-read it to make sure that it was as wonderful as I had thought it, and gave it to my daughter. Her reaction in 1999 is the same as mine was 33 years ago. Thank you, Karen and Gayle!

A Wonderful Mother's Companion;Believe in Yourself
... It was read prior to my daughter's birth and constantly referred to while I nursed her.I was no longer unsure of myself due to lack of information and I recommended it to girls who were first time Moms in the hospital when I had my fourth child. My daughter had a baby three years ago with some medical problems and I met Moms and their Moms that were terribly grateful for a reference book so their baby could continue to be nursed and not believe the short interruption would ruin their desire for the baby to be a nursed baby. My daughter needed to relactate and the hospital gave them the machines to make it possible, knowing ,especially babies who have had a rough start need to be nursed even more for their health if the parent is willing to follow the instructions and there is a lot of support for mothers to nurse, knowing what we do today about breastfeeding. For "To Be" Mothers this is a wonderful gift for them to understand and decide if they are going to breastfeed, and to stand up to the bullies who usually have weird reasons why they oppose breast feeding. Instead of being intimidated, you will wonder which category they come from, and you will be a much stronger , confident mother. Mrs Symmington

The Book We've Been Waiting For!
It took me five minutes of looking through "Clicking with Your Dog" to realize it's the book we've been dreaming of for our clients. Moments later we'd already ordered 100 copies.

This book gets the average American started on the right foot with clicker training. It doesn't bog down the people who "just want to know how to do it" yet directs those of us who can't get enough to further information. It provides excellent guidance to children who are beginning to train and communicate with their dogs. I can only hope 4-H training groups will make it their manual.

The majority of owners who come to see us for assistance with their pet's behavior problems leave with a clicker in their hand. Now they'll be leaving with a clicker in one hand and "Clicking with Your Dog" in the other hand.

Read Morgan's Book first
Clicker training (CT) is great and you can train amazing things to your horse. With clicker training, dificult problems can be solved, you can easily make of your horse your partner, willing to perform everything you want. To learn clicker training, I look around in internet everything I could find and bought two books. The first one I read (thanks God!!) was a book to train dogs, Clicker Training for obedience, by Morgan Spector. Its a GREAT book!! He explains all, since the beginning, and all , ALL his training is based in CT and positive reinforcement. Miss Kurlan makes a great confusion about positive reinforcement and tradicional training (negative reinforcement). She teaches you to train litle tricks with your horse, instead of a complete training program. This book talks about dogs(?)cats (?) and llamas(???) I would rather be reading more about horses. If you would like to get introduced to CT, buy Morgan's book first, I am quite sure you can learn the basics of CT and apply with your horse.

Very EXCITING!
I found AK's "Clicker Training for Horses" very thorough in explanations, suggestions, tips and advise. There is so much more to clicker training your horse than "little tricks". Her book explains what to do, how to do it, what to expect, how to get around the "little" problems that may occur, etc. AK's book leaves no guessing for the reader. It's all a matter of THINKING. For both the horse and his person. I found the information in the book very complete, and am so happy to have lucked upon a training method that I can do myself (and I have successfully) and not pay another trainer. Especially when a lot of the other "trainers" out there are still advocating negative reinforcements. They are getting fewer, but still happen. Thankfully, I have the patience to show my horse the concept. And my horse has the patience to wait until I get it right. I can't thank Alexandra Kurland enough for reinventing this wheel (concept adjusted from Karen Pryor's methods). Now, it's up to us horse lovers to keep this wheel greased and turning smooth.

It works, it's fun
An extremely well-written book. It gives plenty of theory in a very easy-to-follow way. I disagree with "Jose's" review (see below--one star?!? Come on...). While Morgan's book is excellent, there is a definite need to incorporate "traditional" training methods with clicker training when it comes to horses. I.e. When we give a horse an aid, and the horse responds, the aid is relaxed (negative reinforcement). That is how we communicate with horses. As for "training little tricks," in the horse's mind, standing still for mounting is "a little trick" no different (to the horse) than bowing on command. One of the great aspects of clicker training in general, and which I think is nicely commmunicated in this book, is that once you learn how to shape behaviors, you can train a horse (or any animal) to do any behavior that it is physically capable of performing.

An excellent companion volume to this book is Karen Pryor's _Don't Shoot the Dog_.

Don't shoot the Boss
I gave this book four stars only because it really isn't about dog training specifically, or clicker training either. As I realized this, I was somewhat disappointed. But I couldn't quite drop it, and continued. I was glad I did. I found the information, and insite into both human and critter psychology enlightening. Since I had already read Clicker training your Horse, I understood the concept of the clicker. This book gave me a glimpse of how positive reinforcement might be applied to people...where obviously clicking might just get you smacked. I applied positive reinforcment to my boss. He was not a horrible boss, but he was not a caring boss either. I noticed that he seemed to be hungry for approval from his equals, and it occured to me that maybe approval from anywhere might be his "click/reward" I started applying methods suggested in the book, and with in a couple of weeks, he was a most solitious boss. We (the lowerdowns) came to adore this boss, and strove to stay in his department. The more we reinforced the behaviors we liked...the more he exibited them. This book could change your relationship with people. I would recommend it to anyone who deals with people, or animals. Read it through, then go back and study the highlights.

Not a dog training book!
I don't normally comment on other reviews, but one has to wonder if those reviewers who grouse about this "dog training" book have read it very closely. Although the author draws on many anecdotes from her years as an animal trainer, this book is about *general* principles of behavior modification that apply to both animals and people. In her book "Lads Before the Wind", Pryor notes that she originally thought of naming this book "Positive Reinforcement". Her publisher changed the title to an obscure, playful reference in the book, because they thought it would be more catchy. It's a good, informal book that presents the general principles of reinforcement from the very practical perspective of a pioneering animal trainer. Yes, dog trainers can use the information in this book, but so can everyone else too.

However, because the book gives general principles, you'll have to work to come up with a specific training program yourself...

Excellent beginner foray into behavior modification
I don't know where I and my dogs would be without DON'T SHOOT THE DOG. This book was the first book that opened my eyes to a new way a training -- a way based on understanding the principles underlying the "cookbook recipes" I'd been given. Now I'm so much more successful.

I highly recommend this book to any person who wants to learn how to modify their dog's behavior and has been told (wrongly) that their dog is too "stubborn," "dominant," "fearful," "aggressive" or even the wrong breed(!) to train. Those words just mean that the trainer wasn't educated enough to work with your dog. Now you can be successful on your own!

I'm awfully glad this "fad" got started. I never would have made it as a dog owner without it!
