An amazing book for light setup, for studio and 3D work
I work as a computer artist an animator, and constantly search for good books on lighting. In my opinion, this is one of the best lighting books available to the artist, along with the classic from John Alton "Painting with Light". Still Life (PLS) gives simple explanations of light setup, digramatic views of the situation, as well as comments from the photographers about what they were trying to achieve, and why they did certain procedures.

The light setups here are easily adaptable to suit whatever still life (including products) you are photographing/rendering, and I have found it easy to adapt certain lights used into the realm of 3D computer graphics (soft boxes etc are easy to recreate....)

This book should really be part of all film/photographers/artists/animators reference material... I only wish they did a hardback version, as i fear this is going to get used very often.

Oh, the book is extremely well printed, in full colour, on good quality paper, giving an exceptional calirity of image, something unique for the price... All too often books on lighting and colour are in black and white... hahahahhahahaha.

Clearly written, good diagrams, interesting illustrations
When you thumb through this book, your are immediately impressed with the lighting subjects included. Many are not the usual cliches found in books of this type. The diagrams and text are clear and easy to understand. Good book, glad I bought it.

The best series on lighting currently available.
This series has the clearest diagrams to help you understand how to set up your lighting for all types of problems and challenges. Anyone serious about learning studio lighting techniques should have these books as references and idea generators.

Excellent reference for both advisors and their clients
As an attorney-at-law, I found that "Advising Mature Clients" by Dr. Neal E. Cutler has given me a new perspective on analyzing, and on advising older clients about, the increasingly complex series of decisions we all seem to face as we age.

On a personal level, I found the book to be filled with information that is easy to understand and is well-indexed for use by the advisor as well as by those whom he/she advises. Its multi-disciplinary focus gives one an easy depth of understanding of the breadth of Gernontology, and financial & social issues that need to be considered, in just a few hours of study of the clear, concise tables, facts, and figures, which are presented in logical fashion.

The chapter on costs and financial benefits of Long Term Care Insurance alone is worth the price of the book. Strategies and alternatives to pay for Long Term Care Insurance are set forth, along with the sobering financial burden long term care imposes, and the alarming rate of increase in long term care costs, compared to the more affordable insurance premiums.

This book should be kept as a desk reference and ready authoritative source of information, to share with clients who have questions or concerns on any aspect of the topics of Wealth Span Planning and Financial Gerontology.

Excellent resource -- see the evidence for CAM treatments
As a consultant working in the field of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), I find the author has done an excellent job of thoughtfully and objectively collecting a great deal of the more important research literature. The book is easy to access, and can assist the lay person in choosing treatment as well as help health care providers who wish to learn about what CAM practices to include or refer to in their practice.

Most Popular Book I Own
Everybody thinks they know about alternative medicine but this doctor carefully looked for evidence and found it! All my friends call and ask what the books says about the various supplements and treatments and their latest ailments. Because the books has the world's greatest index, I can look up by "arthritis" and find 8 different treatments that have been evaluated.

The book is easy to read and will impress even the most serious physician. I've given several copies to very apprepciative friends. If you buy this book, write your name in it because your friends and family will want to bororow it as much as mine do.

A great book that helped me in my practice
As a Family Physician I needed good information about the alternative medicine literature. I'm a Family Physician, not an epidemiologist. This is the best book of it's kind I've found. I've used this information in my lectures, my practice, and my personal life. I look forward to an updated edition.

Guide to Bush Flying: Concepts and Techniques for the Pro

excellent advice, but pricey
This book was assigned to me as homework for Andover Flight Academy's bush-flying course. I found that most if it didn't apply to the sort of flying I expect do, which is improved grass fields, on wheels. (The airport would be very annoyed if I made an actual bush landing.) Potts for good reason devotes a lot of space to sandbars, snow, and sub-zero and ski-plane operations, and to my regret I'll probably never do any of that.

So the book for me came down to three chapters: takeoffs, approaches, and landings. These are valuable but very short. (Chapter 18 on landings is a bit more than five pages!) There are some useful black-white photographs, all at the back of the book.

For those in the market for an airplane, Potts explains the quirks and advantages of the PA-18 Super Cub and the Cessna 180, but doesn't branch out to the Aviat Husky, despite the fact that it was in production when the book came out in 1993.

I bought my copy through Amazon, but as a secondhand book in good condition, which brought it down to a more reasonable price. Generaly there are several used or Marketplace copies available.

Man O Man
This is the best writer, he describes
flying and landing in the bush. Easy to read,
very interesting. It has some unique stories
in it. I hope to use the techniques!

Don't fly the bush without having read it--
Not only everything you need to know about bush flying, but everything you didn't know you need to know about bush flying.

Good for beginner...
Pluses: Color images and an easy read.
I did enjoy reading this book, and as a new user, running Pro-Tools LE on a MAC, it was useful. Takes you step by step through a project and a little mixing, but don't expect to buy this and hope to learn everything about Pro-Tools. A good book for someone new to the game, and maybe a few tricks and tips for experienced users.
Minuses: Doesn't fully cover all topics or ways to use features in Pro-Tools. Some things aren't addressed at all.

Perfect for the new Pro Tools user
The full-color screenshots and clarity of this well-organized book give the necessary tools to get 'up to speed' on Pro Tools quickly and painlessly. "Pro Tools for Music Production" breaks down the learning curve into three basics, Recording, Editing, and Mixing, as author Mike Collins takes the reader step by step through sample sessions. Plenty of tips, shortcuts, hints and advice along the way.

The tips and highlights are worth the price of admission alone. This is a must-read for anyone involved with Pro Tools.

The Best Pro Tools Book
Pro Tools for Music Production is the best.

It has color illustrations to guide the reader smoothly through the process of using Pro Tools.

What I like most about it is that it clearly explains a topic and what typical situations you would use the function in.

Pro Tools for Music Production will show you how to apply the powerful tools available in Pro Tools for Recording, Editing and Mixing.

P.S. I have never written a review for any book before, but I felt compelled to write one for this one-Pro Tools for Music Production is the best.

Save your money!
You are probably thinking of buying this book to save the cost of attorneys fees. Take my advice and don't do it! This book is based on the premise that the court system is a place where actual rules apply and that you will receive some sort of respect (or at least your constitutional rights) from the arrogant swine who inhabit the system. Nothing could be further from the truth! "He who represents himself has a fool for a client" is true not because you are a fool but because the system is a farce and designed to make a fool out of you.All court system paid participants have a vested interest in guaranteeing that you not be allowed to represent yourself in court. The major failing of this book (written by attorneys) is to pretend that you will be accorded some respect and receive a fair hearing. Some of the preposterous suggestions include hiring an attorney at a reduced fee to act as your advisor! (I will give $1000 to anyone able to find an attorney to act in such a capacity) Other absurd suggestions: that you can demand a fair hearing and complain to higher authorities that will insure you receive it.(no, they are all part of the system). This book cost me thousands. I asked for a refund from the authors.......guess what?, they refused.

A Good, but necessarily limited, intro to the legal system
Overall, I'd give this a positive rating, but since it's written for all 50 states, it is so broad in its coverage that it makes it difficult to learn about how to pursue your lawsuit in your particular state.

I'd suggest reading this book and trying to fill out forms as you go. Pick up the 'local rules' from your own court, and study them for what Bergman doesn't tell you.

One thing I will say, though, is that one bit of advice was invaluable...on visiting the court before your motion or case is heard. I did this, and it took a lot of the mystery out of the whole process.

By doing this, by the way, I was completely surprised that (in the motion hearings) that most of what took place was pretty much on a par with small claims court, with a few legal latin phrases peppering the give-and-take. Most of the motions I heard consisted of two things: Why one or the other party failed to meet deadlines, and trying to get the other guy's case thrown out before everyone went to trial.

One other thing that was also surprising...the opposing lawyers where pretty buddy-buddy with each other. I guess the hostility and animosity that one would associate with a lawsuit pretty much reside only in the parties to the suit themselves.

In my appearance, I took it very cool and did not act emotional at all. Let's face it...the court doesn't want to hear it. They just want to get done so they can go to lunch.

Represent Yourself in Court
This book gives an understandable rendition of the various legal
procedures involved in bringing a major lawsuit into the Court
system. It is most helpful in assisting litigants with case
organization and presentation. The work explains how to document
a case throughout the various phases of a lawsuit with particular
emphasis on presentation of exhibits for trial. The work is
written in a belles lettres style. It could be read by anyone
wanting to understand the litigation process, as well as
law students taking courses in Civil Litigation. The book could
be useful in organizing a case so that a lawyer could pick it
up at a later time. Very often, the details of a claim may not
be fully known until the deposition process has been completed.
I would supplement this book with the purchase of a Civil
Procedure book if the intention is to complete the entire process
right through to trial. This work focuses on the documentation
you will need to develop in order to prove a case at trial.
The work has a good coverage of negotiation strategies.
Ultimately, it is in your interest to deal with a lawyer during
a formal negotiation in order to ascertain that you've secured
a fair deal.It pays to become familiar with a local legal
library as a supplement to this text. In addition, you should
utilize the internet in order to review similar cases
in the various Court jurisdictions relating to your case.
Sometimes it pays to talk to a lawyer who has completed a similar
case in order to gain perspective on the intricacies of the
whole process. This text gives you a good start.
It would be most helpful in organizing the type of case
that only develops after the deposition process is complete.
Early in the litigation, you should do some research in order
to identify cases similar to yours that have been decided.
The past precedent or stare decisis is very critical to
presenting a claim because it encapsules your case into
a similar fact pattern consistent with other cases that have
been decided by the Courts. It is to your benefit to do legal
research in identifying similar cases to your own either by
going into the legal libraries yourself, researching the
internet or paying a small fee for a legal research firm
to identify similar cases as the one you are filing.

A moderate trading book
If you are a casual amateur investor who enjoys reading interview type of trading books, this is okay. If you aspire to be a pro and are actually a pro, you wont be satisfied with the depth and width of it. The trading styles of the interviewees, and so are the Q&As, are just so diverse that one can hardly grasp something "profitable" to his/her own trading. Of course, most of them do mention "no loss averaging, keep losses small, have discipline" blah blah blah, but do most of the trading books talk about the same stuff.

OK if you like Trading Books
The interviews in this book were interesting if you enjoy reading trading books. Even one or two usable nuggets of information for traders. However, if you are looking for a "how to book" you should look elsewhere.

Outstanding Overview of Electronic Trading
My background and experience are in the futures markets, but, like many traders enchanted by the recent extreme vacillations in the stock markets and by the new day trading phenomenon, I wanted to acquire some knowledge of electronic and stock trading. I have read numerous other introductory books on this topic, none of which I will relate here because they are largely inanely simplistic, but, suffice it to say that one need only purchase this book to obtain the requisite education on electronic trading. Dr. Baird is knowledgable, insightful, open and, most importantly, keenly aware of his subject and the subjects he interviews- all of whom offer diverse and interesting insights into the world of electronic trading. While this book will not teach you how to trade exactly- any trader must learn through experience what methods will fit them- it will provide a valuable and eclectic overview of electronic trading and some of the perils and opportunities that await one there. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for any trader looking for an intellectual avenue into electronic trading or to enhance and augment their existing understanding of markets.

Cicero Pro Roscio Amerino
Published in Paperback by Bolchazy Carducci (1987)
Authors: Karl Halm, E. H. Donkin, and Marcus Tullius Cicero
Amazon base price: $12.00
Average review score:

Good edition of Cicero's speech on behalf of Sextus Roscius
If you're looking for an accurate transcription of Cicero's speech defending Sextus Roscius, then this is the text for you. The introduction and interspersed synopses are also very helpful. The only area of improvement needed is in the notes, where, at times, the explanation of a Latin term consists of other (sometimes more obscure) Latin terms. Otherwise, it's an excellent little book.

"Essential Roman History"
Volume one of the "Scriptores Historiae Augustae" begins with Hadrian's reign in 177 AD and ends abruptly at the close of Clodius Albinus' seat on the imperial throne in 197. This history, which is divided into three volumes, traditionally is believed to have been written by six different authors under the supervision of Diocletian and Constantine; so the authors undoubtedly were not contemporaries of the events treated throughout this work. Overall, since these biographies have sufficient historical content, and as a whole comprise one of the three other primary sources drawn upon for our knowledge of the times, it may be deduced with reasonable certainty that these biographies, though many times lacking connection and transition, correct chronology and overall cohesion, are a little more than what the editors have called "literary monstrosities." It is true, also, that nearly every letter and speech is fraudulent, and that several times the narrative is tragically doctored with fragmentary interpolations; however, in spite of this, these biographies are extremely important, and throw light upon an age that otherwise would have fallen into near oblivion. So, as history, these works are essential for students and accomplished historians alike.

A Text Book For Early Adopters
As an avid trader, I am always looking for insight into the market. One of the few writers that offers intelligent objective analysis of the market is Christopher Byron. He is willing to take on a difficult task of scolding companies that have had a high flying record, and that are termed by most as the "Must Have" stocks at the moment. His balanced analysis shows the flaws in the most favored of stocks.

Byron's greatest strength is in his use of exemplary writing. The difficult task of shifting through an annual report to find nuggets of truth and potential problems is a difficult task. Byron is a mine detector when he evaluates a stock for you. And he uses terminology that allows the novice reader to understand the most complicated of financial terms and equations.

I believe that the mark of a great writer is shown by the ability of a highly intelligent person to convey difficult concepts in a manner that the dumbest of people can understand. Byron is one of the few great personal finance writers of our time because even I, a great fool in the stock market, can understand what Byron is trying to explain to novice traders.

Worth the price of admission
This book's list of financial web sites alone was worth the price of admission. Some usual suspects--yahoo, and thestreet.com--and many more that professional investors consult. The newbie investor may be a bit overwhelmed, but if you've graduated to knowing the difference between a market and limit order, you're probably ready and eager to use the Internet to help keep an eye on your money. There's a good appendix of Byron's favorite web sites at the back of the book, so no need to dog-ear the pages when you find Internet gold.

The MASTER of irreverence uncovers great info
If you are at all serious about investing on your own, Deleteyourbroker.com is a must.

I've been actively trading for years and I have read all of the Fool books, Suze Orman, Rich Dad, et. al and this ranks right up there as one of the best. If you've never heard of Chris, I think he does a streaming show on MSNBC at Noon each day that you can check out. His style is his irreverant and inimitable.

You'll find yourself laughing and really learning how to uncover and decipher information from some of the more informative web sites like Edgar-Online and others.

Buy the book, you'll have no regrets
