Great Manual - Easy to Follow
The first 9 chapters of the manual outline the elements that must be considered when establishing a business. These chapters have condensed the topics, on which other authors have written volumes, to a reasonable level that allows a person to evaluate his situation. It may help that person to decide yea or nay on moving to the next step. I have an advantage over most since my business is the result of an expanded hobby after retiring as a professional engineer and not for my livelihood.

Chapters 10 to 18 of the manual are very readable, understandable and reasonably comprehensive for laying out, cutting, assembling, finishing and installing kitchen cabinets. The combination of European construction and North American styling produces cabinets that are sound and attractive. The manual was my 'bible' when I built my first cabinets and installed them. The various tables such as thoser on pages 68, 75, 76 and 85 coupled with the diagrams eliminates the need to do calculations in cutting pieces for any size standard cabinet. The author's step by step descriptions and procedures can be considered 'idiot-proof' for completing a successful project.

Chapters 19 to 22 on pricing, computers, proposals and reference sources finishes off a manual that can used as an excellent reference for a successful buiness in kitchen cabinetmaking.

The customer of my first kitchen that I mentioned above, is still very pleased with her kitchen and is quick to show it off to anyone that will look and listen, as related to me by her husband. I could have completed the project on my own without the manual but I am convinced that I, and my customer, would have suffered much grief and time delays.

I have also reviewed Danny Proulx's "Build Your Own Kitchen Cabinets". It is very similar to The Kitchen Cabinetmaker's Building and Business Manual but eliminnates the business part. It has more explanation and more diagrams so will be easier to follow.

A "must" for turning out professional quality cabinetry.
The fundamental key to successful design and utility for any piece of finely crafted cabinetry are its doors and drawers. They are also the bane of amateur and professional cabinet makers. In Building Cabinet Doors & Drawers, Danny Proulx draws upon his more than thirty years of professional woodworking to provide authoritative, detailed, "how to" information on the construction and installation of a wide variety of doors and drawers including the calculating of drawer size; melamine, inset, and cabinet-grade plywood drawers, slab, frame, flat-panel, multi-panel, stick, tambour, pocket, and glass doors. Profusely illustrated throughout, this highly recommended manual will substantially assist any novice in turning out professional quality cabinetry.

Fun just to read and dream!
I am a beginning cabinetmaking student, and this semester my course work covers basic case construction. Because I hope to design a built-in arrangement that will house a small closet, a chest of drawers and a computer desk in what is currently a large closet space in a small room, I will need to know how to do both drawers and doors as part of it. I purchased Building Cabinet Doors & Drawers by Danny Proulx as a resource both for design and for methods of construction. It is a very satisfying book. I've spent several hours just enjoying the planning of my project and estimating the plywood and hardwood requirements for it. I expect to do both my bathroom and kitchen cabinets over the next two years as well, so the book should get a good work-out.

Building Cabinet Doors & Drawers
Danny Proulx did a great job. This is an excellant book full of tried and true methodes of installing most any kind of Doors & Drawers, including a lot of detailed explainations of new hardware on the market for them. All concepts are explained in pretty much non tech. language. I have read many books by woodworking tech. types. Many of them are mostly written by woodworkers who know there stuff, but conveying it to the non Norm Abrams type is a shot that makes most woodworking books sound like they were translated from an Alien language.
Danny Proulx showes he not only is hot [stuff] in the shop but knows how to teach it to anyone.

Excellent instruction using modern materials and methods
Modern materials and methods means particle board and particle board screws with solid wood face frames and solid frame and panel doors that overlap the cabinet opening, and modern hidden hinges and modern european plastic feet and modern drawer slide hardware. If you want to optimize the look of your kitchen with minimum cost, this is the book for you. Step by step, very good writing, solid construction teaching. If you're into more traditional frame and panel construction using solid wood and/or high grade veneered plywood, rabbet joinery, mortise and tenon joinery or dovetail joinery, butt or knife hinges with flush fit doors, then this book is NOT for you. This book will teach you how to build cost effective cabinets using modern techniques and modern materials and it will teach you very effectively.

One Cabinet Type, Explained well.
Proulx does a great job of explaining a hybrid cabinet style--how it works and how to build it ... with an attention to the brass tacks. This book is a general guide for all kinds of cabinet making. Particularly it describes a half euro/half US cabinet style. Simple boxes with euro hinges, doors of many varieties, drawer construction, tooling, assembly and installation are all covered. It serves as an all-in-one guide to making cabinets _as_ as professional with close attention to adjustability, versatility, and modularity. Highly recommended if you are interested in how to build your own kitchen cabinets.

Proulx teaches a conventionalized form of cabinet design, but it's simple and it works, which is very hard to argue with.

Great Book and Detailed Construction Pictures
I am going to install new kitchen cabinets in the coming month. I ordered this excellent how-to book to begin my research. It contains detailed pictures of the construction process and a system that can easily be applied by the do-it-yourself homeowner. Mr. Proulx shows an easy construction and installation system based upon the modern European technology applicable to cabinetry. With modern European hinges, cabinet legs, and construction materials, cabinetry is within the grasp of the homeowner. This book is not for a seasoned cabinet craftsman of the old school, but, rather, a nuts and bolts how-to book for the homeowner and woodworker with average skills and a shop with the necessary tools such as a table saw, drill, jigs, etc. The harder cabinet door and drawer construction can be avoided, if needed, by outsourcing the same. Definitely worth the money--Thanks Mr. Proulx.

Don't buy
I've never seen cabinets as ugly as the ones in this book. I guess this book was written for the begining woodworker with no taste. This book is lacking in tecnique as much as it is in style.

Worthwhile reading
I don't know that I'd use the cabinets described in this book in some settings. That doesn't mean that the methods Proulx describes are not worth examing. He stesses cost-conscious methods and materials that I wish I had learned earlier. Proulx gives you a method for doing custom work on a tight budget and schedule. This would have been wonderful when I used to work on rental properties.

I'll use this book for reference quite often. There are times when this type of cabinet is exactly what you need.

From Library Journal
Proulx is a Canadian woodworker with more than 30 years experience, the last 11 in his own custom cabinet shop. He is the author of several other books on the craft of cabinetmaking and storage solutions, a contributing editor of CabinetMaker magazine, and the author of many articles for a variety of other woodworking magazines. The current volume presents 15 projects, aimed at the homemaker or hobbyist, which can be undertaken with basic knowledge and tools. Some of the individual projects can be combined in a variety of ways. In a bright, profusely illustrated volume, with some color on virtually every page, Proulx begins with a discussion of tools, techniques, and hardware that is insightful, honest, and encouraging. He then offers an "exploded" view of each project, followed by a materials list, and any details that might be confusing, or of interest to the builder. Proulx includes a metric conversion table, a wood color guide, a concise glossary of woodworking terms, and common defects, and an index. Well written and beautifully produced, this is a strong book with which to start, or to strengthen, one's woodworking skill. Recommended for those collections with strong hobbyist focus or with woodworkers.--Alex Hartmann, INFOPHILE, Skokie, IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information
