An interesting and insightful look at Reconstruction.
An excellent addition to the Civil War literature and one that examines race relations and the feelings of those that tried to move forward after the Civil War. Well written.

Not only engrossing, but educational as well...
Mr. Price brings the reader back to the Curtis family (first introduced in his novel, Hiwassee) and a society faced with new challenges in Reconstruction. This book is educational as well as entertaining--it offers a fascinating look at day-to-day life, the state of medicine, societial problems, romance, suspense, and the tenacity of the human spirit. I couldn't put this book down! It also illustrates how at any given point in history, people are faced with differing--but just as complex--challenges. Good reading, not only for history buffs, but for anyone who appreciates fine literature.

First rate exploration of emotionally fraught situation
This book is an excellent sequel to Price's first Civil War novel, Hiwassee, which dealt with the war as experienced on the home front in NC mountains. Following the family introduced there we find the ex-slave holder and the ex-slave having to deal with each other and the feelings of hate and love and bitterness they both feel. The characters are rich and forceful. The language strong and emotionally evocative.

Well worth the time and money...
This is a fascinating book. The places are real (and some are rather creepy) and the stories are supposedly true. Every story will draw you in. The history and research the author did was extensive. This is a book you could very well (regretfully) finish in one sitting.

Very accurate reporting!
I was born and raised in Kingsport and I even met the author of this book when he came to my high school in 1996. The name is a little hokey but the book is extremely well written and the research is very good, it even includes some newspaper clippings. This book is well worth the price and the read!

A Tennessean
This was a very suspenseful book. It has many short stories in it and all are suppose to be true. Many are folklore that was passed down and most have some eyewitness testimony. My favorite was the one called "A Part Of The Dark Is Moving". Every story takes place at real place in East Tennessee. This is a must have for anyone who likes old fashion ghost stories or folklore.

A must have book in your personal library!
I initially read this book from the local library and after I read the book, I immediately purchased the book soon after. This book is a must have for anyone interested in furthering their life long right to self education. Charles D. Hayes makes you think about your rights to empower your mind. This book offers a variety of necessary topics that should be discussed and studied more.

Wish I would have read this 20 years ago...
Charles Hayes has set the example for all of us to become self-educated. He is an inspiration to continue in our lifelong learning process. The way he writes of his own experiences, what he has learned from them and his willingness to share his knowledge and experience is awesome. A "thinking" man, you are inspired after conversing with him or reading his books. They are one in the same--you are motivated to learn more and share more. This is indeed a valuable reading experience for anyone and especially if you are in the academic world!

Feel the excitement of learning.
Charles Hayes is a superb writer. He asks you to think about important things. If you would like to learn what it feels like to discover yourself and the excitement of what learning is all about, read this book and particularly its Introduction. Jack Roderick

A Blackhead Snake Best Buy
This is an excellent state work, with detailed and accurate text, excellent photographs, precise maps, and up-to-date scientific nomenclature. Common names are those standardized nationwide since 1978, with the exception of the names used for snakes of the genus Tantilla. Purchasers of this book should go to page 307 and simply cross out the tongue-twisting "black-headed" and replace it with Blackhead (so much easier pronounced; it just rolls off the tongue -- truly a common name). Highly recommended. Certainly the best book on the subject, and a must for all herpetologists. Buy it quick before they run out of copies.

Seminal work on NM Herps.
There are many, even myriad, good things about this book. However, there are a few things I did not like and which, if corrected in a future revision, could turn this book into a world beater in the field of herpetology. First the "bad" things: 1. This book needs a topo and political map or several. Places and physical features are constantly mentioned but, other than the tiny range maps associated with each species account, there is only one map at the front of the book which shows the counties and major cities, that is if you consider Animas and Hobbs to be major cities. 2. The glossary needs improvement. There are many terms which are used constantly which should be defined but are not. For instance, in one species account, a lizard is described as having scales which are "imbricate and mucronate." Just for kicks, I looked in the glossary. "Mucronate" is defined - "imbricate" is not. 3. Find another way to arrange the "List of scientific and common plant names used in the text." There is no arrangement whatsoever to the list. Plants are listed alphabetically by genus under the family. However, the family names are haphazard. Thus, if one does not know the family name, one has to peruse the list from top to bottom to find the plant named in the text. Woe be unto the reader who doesn't know that Helianthus is in the family "Compositae," the last named family. Pardon me for saying this but it appears as if the authors used their college botany texts to research the family names. After years of not complying with nomenclatural convention, the botanists finally joined the world and changed family names to agree with convention. Thus, Compositae became Asteraceae and Gramineae became Poaceae, for example. Also, ALL plants mentioned should be listed, even aquatic plants. Plants are keys to finding reptiles and even subtle differences in plant denizens of a habitat may make a great deal of difference in the animals found there. NOW FOR THE GOOD STUFF The standard items are all found at the beginning of the book, e.g., Foreword, Preface, Acknowledgments followed by a concise Physiographic Sketch of New Mexico (Words, not pictures) which in no way can take the place of a good physical map of the state. One of the best features is a "Brief History of Herpetology in New Mexico" in which the authors give insight into the historical aspects of herpetology in the state. This theme is repeated in the text of the species accounts with interesting snippets of history intermixed with the drier facts of science. A checklist of NM herps is provided and this is where disagreements are going to arise. The authors utilize what some would consider "old" or "controversial nomenclature." However, if one reads the species accounts, all disputed uses of nomenclature are explained. Even though I disagree with some of the generic nomenclature used, the authors gave good and valid reasons for using what they did. There are good keys to all the major groups of herps in NM and they appear detailed enough to lead a novice to the right creature, as long as the scales are not imbricate. The species accounts are very well written except for the occasional typo - "then instead of than", for instance -and give loads of information. Virtually everything one would want to know about an animal is in here. The species accounts follow a format similar to the SSAR Catalogue species accounts and that is not at all bad. It might be good if a majority of this type of book were to follow a similar format. A very fine section of glossy photos is found in the midst of the species accounts. It seems that this is the way publishers are going to make books now so, take it or leave it. The photos, by the way, are arranged in the same manner as the text for fairly easy location. Degenhardt, et al, have compiled a magnificent bibliography with everything you ever wanted to know about New Mexico Herps and where to find it. The authors have years of experience in New Mexico herpetology and have used every one of those years in producing an outstanding volume. It's a little large to carry out in the field but it is worth every penny and when in New Mexico, should be at least carried in the vehicle. This book would be a bargain at twice the price.

The Bible of Griswold collecting
Being a collector, dealer and trader with my own online cast iron business..., this the what most collectors call the Bible of Griswold or the BLUE book. It is well laid out with great pictures. The author, Dave Smith, is friendly and easy to approach with questions and is very knowledgeable. It is the first book I go to.

Consider it the Bible of Cast Iron
Finding the author online and then finding his book. What a great book for the first time collector, the continuing collector or the expert. Precise information presented in and easy to read format. Great pictures and lots of neat little notes. A sample of the pricing of any and all. Includes a short history of most of the companies that have made cast iron cookware, and other items in cast iron.

Riviting personalities and gritty reality of Civil War
This book grabs your interest from the beginning and leads one into caring about each of the characters and what they suffer as a result of the Civil War as experienced by families living in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. It is a rare view of what took place because of deserters from both sides and their raids of family farms. It also gives a more realistic picture of the thoughts and actions of the common soldier than is usually found.

Descriptive of both battle and character - loved it!
This book was especially interesting to me since I live in the area where this story took place. It was fascinating to see how each family dealt with war, family upset, loss and neighbor against neighbor. This is a book that should be read by every student in America. Everyone can relate to the turmoil and tragedy of the Civil War (or as they say down here - The War of Northern Aggression) on a personal level through the skillful writing of this author. Tremendous first book!

Great Understanding of the Colonial Tobacco Coast Culture
I bought this book for genealogical purposes, but found that it was a very enjoyable book to read and explained the culture of the Tobacco Coast to me better than several other books I have read. There was also enough detail that I felt I understood much more of the thought processes of the people I have been tracing and has fleshed out their surroundings in a very complete way.

Excellent Scholarship and Good History
Professor Lee gives us a scholarly review of a microcosm of the culture and weltanshauung of a relatively backwater Maryland county headed into revolution. That such scholarship is targeted at a minor topic is truly impressive. If anything, it gives one pause as to whether the investment in academic research in history is overdone. For here is a representative picture drawn, but at such detail it must have taken tremendous resources. One wonders what topics suffer to give such infinite color to a tiny leaf on a giant tree. But the beauty of scholarship and solid writing for those interested in this topic, such as genealogists or revolutionary war scholars, will find this book a delightfully sharp and detailed portrait of a place whose most might town was the now unremembered "Port Tobacco."

An Awesome Book about Faith and Healing
Dr. Price helped me get back to the basic principle of divine healing -- focusing on the healer (Jesus) rather than the healing. His view that faith cannot be generated by humans, rather it is given by God, revolutionized my thinking. This idea takes away much of the worry and stress about stepping out on one's own human effort; rather we are only successful when we act under a complete dependance on Jesus, the healer. If you are hitting a wall when seeking for healing, this book is a must read.

A foundational book on the healing gospel of Jesus Christ
A clear illustration of the reality of Jesus Christ paying for the christians' healing, deliverance and salvation at Calvary's cross. This book is great for explaining the doctrine of divine healing in perfect accordance with the written Word of the living God. A must read for the layman as well as the preacher.

Alive in Christ
This book helps to explain what the "exchanged life" really means. Charles Price uses illustrations that make sense of it all. He opens the scripures with inspiration and makes the old testament come alive as it reveals the coming of the messiah. This is a "must read" book.

Amazing, but...
The book is a true complete guide to anything that shoots, even the airgun section is great..

It also includes a wonderful web directory, index of every known maker's address etc..

The only problem is with listed prices, some of them are little above average (I assume these are the manufacturer's suggested retail prices), While other prices listed are True market prices, which may confuse you a little.

AN EXECELLENT BOOK THAT KEEPS YOU UPDATED ON GUNS & AMMO
GUN DIGEST IS AN EXCELLENT PUBLICATION ABOUT GUN & AMMO THAT IS AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET TODAY. I HAVE BEEN BUYING THIS BOOK EVERY YEAR SINCE 1980. DUE TO MY PREOCCUPATION I MISSED 1988, 1999 & 2000 EDITIONS WHICH I SHALL ORDER VIA THE INTERNET THROUGH AMAZON.COM. THIS BOOK WAS HELPFUL IN MY CAREER AS IT EXPANDED YOUR KNOWLEDGE MORESO WHEN I AM SO FOND OF HUNTING & SHOOTING.

Better than any magazine
So what if it appears only yearly...Gun Digest is the best periodical firearms publication going and has always been. The monthy magazines don't support scholarly firearms writing...only Gun Digest.
