The defintive book on the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem.
It's a great book dealing with the "colonization" of the Holy Land. French and italian adventurers, pilgrims and merchants defeating the muslims in battle and re-creating their own feudal system in the middle east. The author deals with birth and decadence of a civilization that was perhaps one of the most sterile in the history of the world, they were only great lawyers and this is not a title of honor. Every aspect of this re-enacment of the already dying feudal system is analized and criticized: from military and economic system to arts and achitecture (fortresses were a great concern). It's wonderful to watch this anacronistic society heading towards self-destruction.

Excellent cross cultural survey and great teaching tool
The volume is a broad survey of the meanings of sacred space in a variety of cultures and religions - both Western and Eastern. It draws from history, archaeology, philosophy, and comparative religion.

It is pecisely the wide range of cultural comparison that makes it a uniquely useful set of texts.

The articles are academic - heavy, yet thorough and sound.

The volume is a great resource and teaching tool.
