great!
I've been a vegetarian for 20 years and was given this book as a gift. I didn't think there would be much in it for me as I thought I knew it all. I was very wrong. Tips, techniques, recipes -- so much is packed into this book. It's my new kitchen Bible.

not a vegetarian
I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm interested in eating healthier and cutting back on meat. What I like about this book, so far, is that the recipes are easy and delicious. I'm not willing to eat bland food in the interest of health. I love good food and great taste. This book delivers on both flavor and technique. I've learned a lot about how to cook, what to look for and how to prepare great-tasting, healthy food.

Great book
I am a new vegetarian and I find the information in this book really useful. I refer to it over and over again-and the recipes are terrific. I will giving it as a gift to many of my friends.

Cassel's queer but interesting book
The book Cassels Queer Quiz Book is extremely interesting. It taught me a lot, and was extremely fun to read. Unlike most all fact books, David Pollard captures my attention in this one. I thought is was an excellant book because i couldn't put it down, which is alway's an authors goal. I read steadily until I learned all that was in the book. I really think it's a good book for someone who wants to learn new things every day, which should be you.

Papers honoring Le Cam on his 70th birthday
This Festschrift for Le Cam was organized by former students and colleagues on the occasion of his 70th birthday in 1994. It did not actually get published until 1997. There are numerous papers written by prominent probabilists and statisticians who worked in the area of asymptotic theory that Le Cam was so well known for. Erich Lehmann provides an essay on Le Cam's years at Berkeley. Diaconis and Freedman talk about the consistency of Bayes estimates in nonparametric regression. Dudley reviews empirical processes. Yang provides an application of Le Cam's work to sodium channel experiments. Stigler provides an historical account of maximum likelihood through the work of Daniel Bernoulli and Leonhard Euler. van der Vaart covers superefficiency. Donoho and Johnstone present some new results on minmax estimation based on wavelets. Many of Le Cam's colleagues at Berkeley contributed interesting articles including Beran, Blackwell, Brillinger and Freedman. There are nearly as many applied papers as theoretical ones in this festschrift. Other well known contributors include Aalen, Millar, de Acosta, Picard, Ferguson, Pollard, van Zwet, Roussas and C. R. Rao.

A Superb Collection
Often overlooked in favor of the more explicitly political of his contemporaries (most notably, Lu Xun), Shen Congwen's work is richly textured, complex, and lyrical. Shen is a writer who brings the China of his past and present alive without the overburdening and unreal pressure of trying to save it. Nostalgia breathes through his pastoral countryside scenes, and his urban landscapes reveal a fractured, paradoxical consciousness--both unsure and hopeful. In many ways Shen plays the anthropologist to Lu Xun's politically ultra-conscious social engineer. And in this sense he seems more real to a modern reader. He approaches his subjects with less judgment, and with much less baggage. While others try to give life to Chinese society through social change and self-criticism, Shen is more invested in the life that is already there. Certainly he expresses his opinions about many aspects of Chinese culture throughout his stories, but he avoids the beat-you-over-the-head approach. In many cases, it's difficult to really assess what he thinks, which makes exploring his work a more challenging, and satisfying, adventure.

The translations in this edition are smoothly rendered and very readable, although the edition suffers, I think, from its diverse group of contributors. Without a single translator it is difficult to achieve a continuity of style and substance. But all in all this collection is a tremendous addition to the English-accessible literature of modern China. Shen is brilliant and poetic, but in a subtle, understated way. The entire collection is infused with a cocktail of profound nostalgia for the past, hope for the future, and, most of all, the beauty and innocence of the living present.

Good as a first introduction
This is a good book for any beginner with little or no knowledge of grammar as the authors avoid almost completely grammatical terminology. The book contains very practical and interesting dialogues focusing on colloquial language which, in my opinion, constitute the very best of this book. I also found the cultural notes very interesting and useful. However it does not offer a full and systematic treatment of the morphology and syntax. It should be regarded as a first introduction for all who wish to get more than a basic understanding of Turkish.

Easy, logical, useful, everyday Turkish
I lived in Turkey for seven months and used this book more than several others I had at my disposal simply because it gives useful and logical explanations of Turkish grammar (which is very different to anything you have seen in English or other European languages). It is a step by step book with conversational examples that both extend your vocabulary and your use of grammar in everyday situations, making it easy to apply what you have learned as you talk to shop owners, waiters, fellow commuters and others interested in learning where the yabanci (foreigner/stranger) comes from! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a basic understanding and wants to teach themselves. It would also work well with a tutor but you dont need anything else, except perhaps some assistance with pronunciation, as vowel harmony takes some getting used to.

Turkish language for a greek
For us Greeks Turkish is quite easy from the point of its vocabulary- so many common words- and at the same time its grammar and pronunciation is so difficult..almost weird. Its a good book as long as you see it as a task to be done and completed..it doesnt help much if you see it just as a game. I managed to study 8 of its 16 chapters before travelling to Turkey..it proved to be surprisingly helpfull..I managed to talk in naif Turkish with some Turks who had no knowledge of English..I thank the authors for this. it takes about one week of study to fully comprehend and assimilate each of its chapter..this doesnt mean that you dont have to go back to previous ones all the time..but, after all, its a new language.

A Nice Collection of Articles
This book is a collection of articles, with accompanying advertisements, from "Jaguar Enthusiast" magazine. It covers the major areas from body work, to suspension, to engine, drive train, and exhaust.

I used this book more as a guide to the steps that must be completed. It is not a detailed account of each overhaul. When accompanied by a Jaguar Repair Operation Manual and a Jaguar Parts Catalog, you wind up with almost all of the documentation you need.

Note: This car is most helpful for restoring Jaguar Series I, II, and III cars built from the early '70s through the late '80s. Though some of the information may be useful, this book does not cover newer models of the XJ40 and beyond.

Don't buy this book
This is an Audi book written for English consumers--with English address for information and repair, and (I think) models that were popular in England. Not much applies to cars common in the U.S., like Audi 4000's or 5000's (are they the same as the 80's, 90's, A6's (I don't know and the book doesn't say.))

There is some brief history of Audi, a lot of racing history, and lot of turbo information, and not much else. The buying section is poor and mainly for overseas, the repairing section is only a few generic pictures and narratives and nothing usable, and the tuning only applies to turbos and high performance, nothing usable for the normal driver.

There is little about how the AWD works and how to optimally drive it for the normal driver.

A few tidbits of information, but definitly not a reference book.

There is a whole chapter on how to keep your car from being stolen, which I found silly.

Some nice pictures of race cars.

I find this an armchair book and not much else.

Better than nothing, I guess...
As an Ur-Q fan and owner, I had high hopes for this book but was disappointed by several factors: 1) The amount of filler (does a book targeted at such a narrow audience really need a section on how a radiator is rebuilt or a wheel is refinished? I think not); 2) The lack of original insight into the design or production of these cars (frankly, this book could have been written ten years ago) and 3) The total lack of nitty-gritty details about the car that requires years of firsthand experience with them to uncover ... although the author is also an owner, one almost suspects he bought the car simply to establish his bona fides and not due to any longstanding attraction to or fascination with them.

Of course, satisfying a hard-core Ur-Q fan such as myself may be a difficult (if not impossible!) task. For those readers who've only recently come to learn that Audi was making AWD cars as far back as 1980, this book is probably a good introduction to them; for those of us already in-the-know, however, it comes across as yet another opportunity missed.

4 Stars and 4 rings! A great reference source
Excellent chronology of a great marque. Mr. Pollard provides the reader excellent tips for buying, maintaining, tuning, upgrading, a urquattro, including the rarest of rare 20V model.

Helpful photographs show examples of problems, etc. or great pictures of the Audi in its winning posture during the 80's as a Super B rallye winner!

Written in the UK, much information and shops are from the UK, and therefore difficult to contact from the US since internet addresses are not given.

Good book, bad title / [...]
The title of this book is not appropriate , because when you read this
book, you will find very interesting tips , but the tips are very
general.
If you hope to find technical draws, or tips to modify your mini you
can
not.. Otherwise the book is very ilustrated, but only according to
improve
your car, maybe a new title for this book might be for example, "Bill
Sollis, and his mini", or " the race mini of Bill") .

I hope you consider this observations, in order to give a buyers and
users
more accurate and reliable information.
