A bitingly funny satire
"Accidental Death of an Anarchist," by Dario Fo, is adapted by Gavin Richards from a translation by Gillian Hanna. The Methuen Modern Plays edition contains an introduction by Stuart Hood; Fo himself contributes an author's note and a postscript. The opening pages note that the original Italian edition had a copyright date of 1970. The author's note describes how the play was inspired by the death of an anarchist being held in police custody.

This outrageous comedy opens with a character known as the "Maniac" being brought to a police station. It's a very "metatheatrical" piece; Fo warps theatrical conventions and makes jokes in a way that reminds me a bit of Luigi Pirandello's "Six Characters in Search of an Author." There are some really funny scenes, but a very serious vein still runs throughout the piece.

Ultimately, this is a thought-provoking piece about truth. What is the true story, and how do you discover it? Fo's satiric wit explores police brutality as well as the relationships among the police, the media, and the political establishment. I recommend this piece by the Nobel Prize winning Fo to all with an interest in 20th century drama and/or political activism.

One of the best!
In the age we're living in today, this is the perfect satire of police departments. We always here in the news about some cop in some city getting caught framing someone innocent (or sometimes worse). Fo does a wonderful job of humorizing that situation. Some might call the play over-the-top, but they're just missing the humor of it all. I've read a lot of plays, and this is definitely one of the best modern plays out there. Everything about it screams "wit." The characters are great, and memorable too. If you have the chance to buy it, don't miss it!

Way Too Much Zen
I saw a small production of this play a few years ago in downtown Minneapolis and was most interested in what it had to say about police interrogation techniques. This is not a topic which I would expect to be popular now, as most emphasis has been shifted to deadly confrontations, and the only major death in this play is of a suspect who was hanging out of a police department window before he dropped to his death. In the history of people being pick up for interrogation, this might be as famous someplace in Italy as the Biko case in South Africa, where police in Port Elizabeth picked Biko up and slammed him against the wall because he was not cooperating fully in their investigation of his attitude toward law and order.

I thought that the theme of the play was that the police get overly zealous in trying to pin a crime on a particular person once the police have made up their collective minds who they think should have committed the crime, as the defense allegations in the famous O.J. murder case seemed well founded when the methods of the L.A.P.D. were subject to the scrutiny of attorneys who are aware of how these things are usually done. In the case of the actual event upon which the Accidental Death of the Anarchist was based, the police techniques were subject to an official investigation, and the play was written as on ongoing farce which kept Italy informed as more facts came to light. The play may be way beyond the Zen of any audience, but if people think that something about the nature of the police is revealed in it, I don't think that those people should be considered as paranoid as they ought to be. Anyone who loses sleep over this kind of thing hasn't adjusted well to modern society, so they can probably find a shrink to give them pills that will put them to sleep, but that is a different topic, but not much different, really.

This is an adventure with a twist!
The story turns upside-down, with a normal boy like yours and mine finding himself befriending oddball characters and fleeing from goblins and ghouls. Our kids found themselves enmeshed in an imaginative plot filled with both dark and funny characters, wondering how Dario would get out of ... or into ... his next escapade. That it keeps a youngster reading avidly while it creatively depicts the battle between evil and good is what a parent likes. That it is an intriguing, engrossing story is what the kids liked! Best for older pre-teens.

Dario Figg Rocks
This book is cool. I especially like the dog. It also has an annoying sister, so that's realistic. The monsters are cool, too. This is the second book I've read by Mark Harris and I can't wait for the next one. My friends always want to borrow these books when I'm done.

excellent and very enjoyable
This story is written for both adults and children. The Spanish flows beautifully. The book could definitely be used as a tool in teaching young children Spanish. The story is enchanting and wonderfully written.

Margarita,
This children's story, beautifully written by Ruben Dario, one of the most accomplished Spanish-speaking writers, was one of my favorite as a child. The verses flow like music and it is a perfect tool to help your children to develop a sense for Spanish poetry, while being transported to the magic setting of the story. This edition beautifully illustrated, has become a link between my childhood and and my children's.

A Great Desk Reference
This is a perfect book for someone to keep as a desk reference for the personality types. I found the information very valuable even though I own most other books on this subject. It is an outstanding reference for the types in an organizational setting.

Comprehensive and Concise---Perfect for Organizations
I found this booklet to be of extreme value compared to similar products. I used to buy a whole text to give to my clients before this came along. It contains some of the best material I have seen on the Myers-Briggs types. The fact that it has so many great contributors is a value-add. I would recommend this booklet to anyone using Myers-Briggs types in a professional setting. The booklet covers multiple topics including leadership, career development, creativity, stress, problem-solving, personal development, and learning. At first I was overwhelmed with the page count for the types, but after reading the content I was pleasantly excited and couldn't wait to show them to my customers. The book also includes some interesting new information about a new model---MTR-i---which is a team role model based on Jungian type. A very good value for the low price.

The Tricks of the Trade

A freeing work from a brilliant actor/scholar.
In this book Dario Fo articulates the relationship between actor and audience in a way only someone who has accepted the physical and mental demands of the acting craft can do. Fo demonstrates he is one part actor, one part scholar, and one part inspired artist. Each page illustrates the line between how an actor acts and their audience cannot be separated from themselves, their society, or from the history of the craft. If nothing else, Fo's joy in performance helps explain why actors remain central to entertainment and to society.

I plan to buy it for my daughter - a fledgling Commedia artist.

The 16 Personality Types, Descriptions for Self-Discovery
Published in Paperback by Telos Pubns (1999)
Authors: Linda V. Berens and Dario Nardi
Amazon base price: $6.95
Average review score:

An Excellent Buy for the Small Price
Having a career interest in psychology, I have read a few books on the subject of personality type, and I found "Descriptions for Self-Discovery" to be a good purchase for the small price. The book provides fairly small, two page descriptions of each personality type, briefly detailing the traits. A good deal of information is stored in the two-page synopsis, but there is no functional analysis of the types, so look elsewhere for deeper textbook-style reading. I also found that people tested for the first time reacted well to the short and descriptive type-models, and were interested in learning more after being "primed" with the information in this book. A good aid for counselors aiming to deepen initial interest and active participation in self-discovery with patients.

This book is not a reference for psychologists, but is well worth the small price for its unique and easily digestible type descriptions.

Informative and Interesting.
"The 16 Personality Types" is a workbook-style book that holds a lot of information and is available at a more than reasonable price. I bought it and was extremely pleased with the descriptions, which make it fun and fairly easy to discover one's "best-fit type." I myself, for example, am unquestionably a Harmonizer Clarifier; the description sounded like I wrote it. My mother tried to find her type and it was a bit more difficult, but with some concentration we deduced that she is the Foreseer Developer. You really will discover yourself and others better with this book. As someone interested in all forms of gaining self-knowledge, from astrology to numerology to the Dewey Color System to this, I recommend it.

Excellent booklet covering the essentials of the 16 Types
With the explosion of new books on type in the last few years, you might wonder what more could be written to be put into an introductory booklet on the sixteen types. Well, Linda Berens and Dario Nardi have done just that. As a student of David Keirsey, Dr. Berens has long been an advocate of the concept of temperament and has been a key force in having the concept become accepted in the Manual for the new Form M of the MBTI. Dr. Nardi was a collaborator with Dr. Berens on her previous booklet: Understanding Yourself and Others: An Introduction to Temperament.

Imagine you are shown an oval shadow. What do you think produced it? Depending on the angle of the light, it could be a sphere, a cone or a cylinder. Now move the position of the light on the unknown object. The shadow now might appear as a diamond. With a few more clues you may determine that the object was a cylinder. This is a metaphor for describing personality. When you are helping people determine their personalities, you help them compare themselves to patterns that have been found to apply to various other defined personality types. The authors call them best-fit type patterns. The descriptions are not composited based on preferences or temperaments but are observable holistic patterns. They are also careful to show that the concepts do not place people in a box, but rather give them a vocabulary to understand differences and similarities. The graphics chosen are simple but effective in demonstrating these concepts.

The authors have used the Johari Window (a training diagram from the days of group dynamics) to show that a description of the type is a combination of how others see us and how we see ourselves. Next you are encouraged to read over brief descriptions of the sixteen types, read the two page descriptions of the types that seem to fit, and then choose the one type that fits best.

People used to seeing the Myers-Briggs Type Table will find the sixteen types arranged in a different pattern. Here they are grouped according to temperament or in a Temperament MatrixTM. So, if you have identified your temperament, you would start in that quadrant and read those descriptions first to find the one most likely to match your type.

The sixteen types are each described in a two-page format. On one side is the objective description, including a short snapshot summary, and then a longer portrait that describes the theme of the type and the type in relationships. The other page describes how it feels to be in that type. These descriptions are a composite of responses to the question What is it like to be you? by four individuals (two men and two women) who have identified themselves as that type. My wife and I both felt our descriptions were quite accurate and insightful.

Having identified your type, you are encouraged to further use the Johari Window to use it as a matrix to identify new learnings about yourself, and to go on and take action to further develop your personality.

The booklet has two appendices: one elaborates on the theory relating temperament to type, and the other provides notes for facilitators.

While it has some very useful information for people trained in the use of the MBTI, they may want to experience the full presentation by a TRI trained facilitator to fully benefit from the material. This is a very worthwhile book to add to your MBTI library. But be warned! You may feel that your presentations are somewhat lacking and that you need to find out more about The Self-Discovery ProcessSM. You may get so excited that you will want to see that all of your clients get a copy of the book as well.
