A Gem of a Picture Book
My sister sent this beautiful book to my children for Christmas. It's a stunner with complex, rich sentences, lush illustrations, and a storyline that includes flashbacks, foreshadowing, frame tales, and developed characters. My children, ages 3 and 6, love it, too. My daughter noticed that the cover of the book resembles worn leather--she's right, and the effect is wonderful. We read the note from the author and learned new things about cowboys and settlers (which I won't give away here). Suffice it to say that from now on, we're sleeping with horse hair ropes around our bedding!

BEAUTIFUL HOLIDAY GIFT
This is a touching story of perseverance and hope. I was looking for books to give as Christmas presents this year, and this really impressed me.

Whitebark Pine Communities : Ecology and Restoration
Published in Hardcover by Island Press (2001)

Amazon base price: $70.00

A Comprehensive Species Review
I found this to be a well-written, informative book on the ecology of whitebark pine. The chapters were well organized with lots of references. The editors also included a useful index, and contact information for the contributors. The restoration section included both general principles as well as a detailed case history of a restoration project in the Bitterroot mountains of Idaho and Montana. I would recommend this to any serious student of subalpine ecosystems or forest restoration. The reference sections alone are worth the purchase price

Awaited New Edition
Although the fast paced development of this area makes a guide such as this very difficult to keep updated and current, this was a much needed revision to the original guides. The history, obstacles, maps & charts, launch & rental sites, approximate paddling times, and grades for each river make this guide ideal for both canoeists and kayakers. Listings for Pinelands preservation and conservation organizations are also included so those who treasure these rivers can support the cause. If you are paddling in NJ, you won't want to miss at least one of the Pine Barren Rivers and this is the guide you will need.

Primary source for planning 1 and 2 day trips
Brief history of the area precedes descriptive listing of the river as you proceed downstream, listing water character, potential obstructions, scenery, and distances between points, as well as put in and take out choices. Maps, and distance charts are excellant. Canoe rentals, town facilities are listed. Must keep in mind that descriptions depend on time of year visited. I've had my copy, well annotated by me, for more than 10 years and review it before every day trip. Its pocket size makes it handy to bring along.

Formal Education in an American Indian Community: Peer Society and the Failure of Minority Education

Anthropological analysis
This book brings a theorectical analysis of the subject of american Indian education that is still fresh today. The problems associated with Indian education raised in this text are sadly still with us and much of the reason for that continuing problem can be found in the failure of the educators, whose job it is to teach American Indian youth, to follow some of the suggestions contained in this text. On the down side, the statistics in this text are dated and in need of revision. I would still even with that proviso recommend it heartily to any anthropologist or educational theorist looking into problems associated with Indian educational failure. Buy this book!

Hiking Tennessee Trails
I found this book to be quite interesting and informative. It discusses not only the trails themselves but their history. The physical descriptions of the trails are excellent, however I would have liked to see more detailed maps. It is a wonderful book to use as a reference.
