Excellant General Surgery Text Book
This is an excellant text book of general surgery. The book covers all the basic topics of surgery in a great mannor. There are plenty of good quality pictures and illustrations. The book is well divided into chapters. There is a summary at the end of each topic which gives a reivew of all the contents. I would highly recommend this book for rmedical students and surgical residents.

Outstanding introductory surgical text
I am a graduating senior medical student, and I happened to come upon this text quite by accident. Intending only to browse it for the moment, I found the text to be captivating. The author gives a clear and concise overview of every major surgical topic in a way that is approachable and easily understandible. The tables and figures nicely complement the "high yield" text. I only wish I had this text when I did my surgical clerkship.

Terry Gross is the best!
I came across National Public Radio many years ago just tooling around the FM dial. I found "Fresh Air with Terry Gross" and was hooked by the interview at the time, with Clint Eastwood. The questions were ones I would want to ask him. I was intrigued by this voice I have never heard before on radio, sophisticated, smart, smooth, curious, and down to earth. No commercial radio hype, none of the exaggeration for a big news story, not a celebrity exclusive. I've since heard this audio compilation of the the comedians interviewed on "Fresh Air laughs" and loved it. This isn't just a side splitting laugh a minute tape, it also brings you a realization that these are real people. The Bill Murray interview is so unlike his performer identity we all know that you have to listen to it carefully, because Terry brings out his humanity with her interview style. We get to listen to conversation that has substance and not just style. This is a tape you can sink your teeth into, it's that thick.

A Male-Female Continuum: Paths to Colleagueship

Why gender equity is needed.
Parity is a priority. Or it must be soon. These authors show why a new appreciation for gender equity is needed. Why the polarity of either dominance or subordinance among males/females doesn't work. At the office. At home. On the town. Throughout one's life. This is a revised and expanded edition of a pioneering book first launched about ten years ago which sought to nurture dialogue between men and women toward a more harmonious context in which to live and work. These new pages reflect an even better understanding of the dynamics among colleagues, especially with updated observations on people of color and gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. Old habits die hard. "The interplay of gender, race, sexual orientation, and class is a reality of our society. Accepting that it is (is) necessary if we are to move on the struggle toward equity." Separate chapers examine men and women in transition, characteristics common to dominant and subordinate conditions. Relevant graphics drive home strategic points, and a terrific fold-out at the back tracks "traditional" women and men toward a common ground. From violence and helplessness to mutual powerment. Why not just pass new laws? Been there, done that. "The law and the legal process still lag far behind the values held by most women and many men. There are limits to what the laws can accomplish." That's why the new paradigm set forth in this book is so valuable. It clearly explains what the problems are, in text and graphics, then points to a trail of solutions. Get with it.

Rewards and Intrinsic Motivation: Resolving the Controversy
Published in Hardcover by Bergin & Garvey (30 April, 2002)

A compelling case for rewards and incentive compensation.
This book presents study findings and provides an in-depth discussion on the question of whether or not extrinsic rewards negatively affect intrinsic motivation. The authors conclude, on the basis of over 100 experimental investigations, that there no support to the claim that rewards produce significant and substantial decreases in people's intrinsic interest. They also conclude that rewards can be used to enhance performance and motivation. This is a scholarly work of outstanding quality and clearly addresses a controversy that, to this day, divides people in management. As a management consultant specializing in compensation, I highly recommend this book to every practitioner, academic and author/expert who would rid the world of pay for performance; I hope they have the intrinsic motivation to read it with an open mind-if so, I believe they will be rewarded for their effort.

The Autobiography of Foudini M. Cat
Published in Audio Cassette by Random House (Audio) (1997)
Authors: Susan Fromberg Schaeffer and David Hyde Pierce
Amazon base price: $18.00
Average review score:

wonderful book marred by the ending
Although this is Foudini's autobiography, which he recounts for his cat, Grace, so that she will know what Life is like, the book is basically a love story about Foudini and his dog Sam. Foudini is rescued from the laundry room of an apartment building when he is still a small kitten. He is eventually adopted by a couple whom he names "Warm" and "Pest" and later befriends their dog Sam (at first Foudini thinks Sam is a wolf who wants to eat him but later they become very close companions). Much of the book details both conversations between Foudini and Sam and their games and adventures together, including the various times when Sam saves Foudini's life. I found parts of the book utterly charming, in particular the section in which Foudini explains why cats like heat so much as well as the section in which Grace tries to teach "Warm" how to speak cattish (I read this outloud to my husband -- it took me nearly ten minutes to read three pages, we were laughing so much). Schaeffer has clearly spent a great deal of time observing her own cats and here creates a universe for them that is richly populated with "dog fairy tales" and dreams in which real and mythological cats appear to Foudini to help him sort out his thoughts and emotions on various matters. The only real problem I had with the book was the ending -- one of those mythological cats that keep coming around should have told Foudini that two to three million homeless cats and kittens are euthanized in the US every year -- more kittens are not the solution to this problem. Still, it's definitely worth reading if you like cats or dogs.

A Perfect little book
This is a wonderful stoy. It helps to be a cat lover but even if you aren't it's an enjoyable book. It's so funny. Poor Warm she just can't speek cat, poor Foudini he's so embarrased by her attemps. It's also so sad. Foudini is a feral kitten born with no chance until a human takes him in. He remembers his poor mother who took good care of him but one day didn't come back from her search for food. His relationship with Sam is touching and heartbreaking. Grace brings joy and responsibilies to his life. I have five wonderful treasure all of whom someone else considered trash so I saw my furry babies in Foudini. This is a must read.

I Love This Book!
This book about a housecat is very deceptive. It's extremely funny and dead-on accurate about the way cats behave. I was convinced that Foudini's thoughts were real thoughts of a real cat. I couldn't put the book down and ended up staying up much too late to finish it and then began again the next morning. I've read some reviews here that say the book is an "easy read," and I suppose it is, but this is a wonderful book about mortality and loss and I found it very comforting. It was the only book I was able to read after my mother died. I hadn't been able to cry until I read FOUDINI, but somehow after reading, this book did the trick. I wouldn't have expected this result myself. I think this is a great book for all animal lovers, maybe the best book about animals I've ever read. I hope more people find their way to this book. It practically purrs itself.

Buttons

Great for older children
This original fairy tale reads like a classic. The story is funny, and the illustrations support this humourous tone. There is plenty of detail in the pictures for older children to pore over. I would recommend this for 1st graders and up.

An Old Fashioned Fairy Tale
Brock Cole's, Buttons, begins...Once upon a time and after a very silly, funny, satisfying story, has a happily ever after, ending. Buttons will delight children of every age, as three daughters are sent out into the world, by their mother, to find new buttons for their father's trousers. Mr. Cole's beautiful water color illustrations add just the right old fashioned touch to this story. The perfect bedtime story for your little ones. Read and enjoy!

Thank heavens he's back!
Brock Cole began his career as author and illustrator of a number of lovely, marginally goofy picture books, illuminated with his own careful, exuberant watercolors. Mr. Cole took a break from picture book publishing to concentrate on chapter books for older kids (not that we mind - all 3 of his novels are themselves extraordinary achievements) but has returned with _Buttons_, his first picture book for more than a decade. This _Buttons_ is a particularly fetching send up of the fairy tale genre, replete with nobles, simpletons, paupers and princes, and blessedly full of Mr. Cole's sweet, ironic sensibilities. Let us hope that with his paintbrush freshly wetted Brock Cole will again decorate our bookshelves with a succession of similar charmers.

Misnomer
Why is this in with the veggie books? Veggies don't eat turkey or Cornish hens!

I love this book!
I love Barbara & Kim's book and continually use it. I'm eating lots of the Phytoia top 10- except for kale, which I haven't been able to find, but my greengrocer is going to get some in for me. Margie, from Australia

Wealth of good things
This book is well written and easy to follow. The wealth of good things in here is enough to keep you busy reading the pages over and over. The recipes are so easy and taste delicious. If you are interested in the research about our health issues and good food, this book is at the top of my list. I have told people at the natural food markets to stock this book. Wonderfully written and covers all topics related to good eating. More than a healthy cookbook. A great coffee table book and reference book.
