A Touching Tale
Our family recently had the opportunity to attend a program at our local library. The author, Libby Meggs read this book, Go Home! and presented a slide show of the real James the cat. We learned of the process she followed translating her photographs into the beautiful, detailed illustrations contained in the book. The reading itself provided a most touching tale of love and caring for young children. Highly recommended!

Winner of the national ASPCA Henry Bergh Award!
This book won the coveted national ASPCA Henry Bergh Award for humanitarian children's literature. Deservedly so!

It is a poignant story that teaches kindness to animals without preaching. The detailed, realistic illustrations are beautiful. I think this book should have won a Caldecott Award as well!

--A powerful and genuine story--
My friend Ann told me about this little book, and I decided that I too, should read it.

This is a poignant story of a lost and lonely cat. He's very attractive with black fur, a white chest, and white paws. The little feline wonders through a neighborhood hungry and weak, seeking a safe place. He meets some children and their mother who appear to admire him, but because he's wearing a collar they assume he belongs to someone in the area. The truth is, he's been lost for a long time and he has no home. The collar, once placed on him with care, is now outgrown and is causing him a great deal of pain. He does not remember how to get home. Months pass and the cat is slowly starving to death because he's too weak to hunt. One day, the exhausted cat is confronted by a large and aggressive dog. What happens to the cat and how he gets his name is a story every child will love.

This beautifully told narrative is well accompanied by memorable and touching illustrations. The fact that this is a true story makes it very powerful and reminds us that a stray animal may need help.

EXCELLENT!
Our lives were recently touched by natural events in Oklahoma. Last year I heard Jim on the Art Bell show talking about preparedness.

I decided to purchase his book and as a family we started to put into use some of the principles outlined in the book. We did not experienced the trauma of losing a house, relatives or friends. But, we were ready for anything.

His ideas on water storage came very handy and we were able to help out other neighbors.

I recommend this book and tape to anyone interested on the safety of family and friends.

An Empowering 'Wise Stewards Y2K Contingency Plan'
Jim Phillips is a doer, not a talker. He's walked the talk, and has lived the very strategies for over 30 years that he is recommending. Now he's helping us fulfill our Stewardship responsibilities for those under our care.

These principles helped me understand that 'Things' aren't going to save any of us if Y2K materializes, but he's also not in the camp of just wishn' and hopen'. He believes you need a very specific plan, and that anyone can survive wonderfully for 30-90 days minimum without grocery stores, utilities, communications, or shelter if you'll put these principles into practice.

It changed my entire outlook on Y2K, or any emergency, or job loss, or anything that could unexpectedly happen. I highly recommend this book.

Excelent, personal guide to the Y2K phenomenon.
A powerful guide and a no non-sense 'how-to' book, to better understand and deal with the potential disruptions that Y2K may bring. Not a 'dooms' book, but a perfectly laid out principle based manual.

I found the book and the enclosed tapes to be filled with practical knowledge.

I have read many books on the subject and I often find that the 'solutions' given by the authors are not even options for most individuals.

This wonderful book offers real solutions and empowers you to understand your surroundings and yourself.

If you are concern about the posibilities of Y2k, I strongly recomend this little guide.

Guide to Marine Mammals of the World
Guide to Marine Mammals of the World illustrated by Pieter Folkens et al is a National Audubon Society book organized into four major groups of marine mammals; marine fissipeds, pinnipeds, cetaceans, and sirenians.

There is fascinating detail as the book goes on to describe the world's whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and sea lions, manatees, marine and sea otters, and polar bears. Not only is there detailed descriptions, but there are maps to show where these animals live throughout the world. There is a general introduction that outlines the evolution and tanonomy of marine mammals, distribution, migration, watching guidelines, identification techniques, organizations and laws that protect marine mammals.

There are 120 species represented in this book. Also, there are facts about social organization, surface behaviors, swimming and diving, details about food items and foraging techniques, and estimates of population in the wild, plus current and historic threats.

If you are taking a trip to the coastlines or live near the oceans then don't be caught without this fine field guide. You will be amazed by the wildlife near the and in the ocean. This is a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated work.

Don't leave home without it, as your trip will be richer and more fulfilling as you spot the animals listed.

A lasting, important library reference
Pieter Folkens illustrates Guide To Marine Mammals Of The World, a comprehensive desk reference which blends color photos and maps with realistic drawings of marine mammals. Paintings illustrate juvenile and subspecies, photos show typical behavior and appearance in the wild, and color range maps reflect the latest information, while chapters cover all the natural history basics. Guide To Marine Mammals Of The World promises to be a lasting, important library reference.

The 'Sibley' of Marine Mammals
The National Audubon Society's Guide to Marine Mammals of the World contains a wealth of information about pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), sirenians (manatees and dugongs), polar bears and otters that's timely and easy to digest. Descriptions, range, behavior, etc. of the various species are informative, with just enough detail for anyone short of a marine biology major.

Along with a number of excellent quality photographs, Pieter Folkens (from my hometown of Benicia, CA!) illustrations are superb. From Knopf, the same publishers of the Sibley Guide to Birds, the graphics and layout of this guide are similarly clean and very attractive. I think it's one of the best looking books of it's type, and an ideal introductory guide for anyone with an interest in marine mammals.

A Key Reference for Those Interested in Christian Mission
This is an excellent resource for those interested in the development of modern Mission theory. The book is produced in a concise dictionary format, with articles on over 70 prominent figures from a variety of traditions. Each article provides a biographical overview of the subject personality, a summary of their main contributions to Mission, and a discussion of their central writings. Articles conclude with a select bibliography of foundational sources that provides the reader with an excellent starting point for further reading and research.

Because the book focuses upon those in Mission who have left a literary record, there are few women who are examined in these pages. Women missionaries (generally) tended not to write treatises on mission theory and practice. So, even though they were central to Christian Mission during the time period covered, they are virtually absent from this volume. This should not be counted as a fault, however. Rather, the reader should keep in mind the limits of what the book covers.

This book should be in the library of anyone interested in Christian Mission. Excellent.

Biographical studies from the Modern Missionary Movement
Mission Legacies is an attractive, durable hardback book of missionary biographical articles published by the American Society of Missiology through Orbis Books. It is divided into several major divisions: "Promoters and Interpreters," "Theologians and Historians,""Theorists and Strategists," and "Administrators." The chapters of this book first appeared as articles in the "International Bulletin of Missionary Research" beginning in 1977. Chapter assignments were made in a "serendipitous fashion over a period of about twenty years", as editors chose well-known contemporary church historians to write the biographical profiles.

Some of the famous 75 names are from the late 1700's, but most are from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They were chosen without regard for disciplinary, national, or denominational backgrounds, though there are only six women and six representatives of the two-thirds world among them. This will no doubt be different if a later edition is published.

Though the articles are scholarly, they are very readable and interesting. This will serve primarily as a reference book, but lovers of world missions and biography will find themselves often dipping into it for information and inspiration. I was pleased to find such diversity as Pius XI and William Carey, such educators and promoters as A.J. Gordon, John R. Mott and W.O. Carver, and such famous missionaries as David Livingstone, Hudson Taylor and Lottie Moon. I was glad to see historians like Kenneth Scott Latoureette and Stephen Neill, such innovative missionaries as Frank Laubach and E. Stanley Jones and such missions strategists as John Nevius, Roland Allen, D.T. Niles and Donald McGavran. In these pages, students of world Christianity "can gain insight into the spiritual and human dynamics that produced the modern Christian missionary movement". This book, now in its fourth printing, should be of interest to all students of World Christianity and Mission.

Applied Data Communications - A Business Oriented Approach
Unlike many books, written on today's technology issues, Jim approaches this topic from the business perspective. This top-down approach allows one to understand how a set of technologies maps to the business drivers. This books looks at business impact from a business management perspective. Moreover, this book covers a range of topics that allow the reader to understand the complexity, and interrelationships, of today's distributed internetworking environment.

The reader will be exposed to layered architectures - understanding how they interrelate, yet remain separate. The topics range from an overview of Data Communications - including voice, through local area networking - protocols and OSs, WANs, internetworking and remote access. The book closes with coverage of the network development life cycle, network management and security.

What sets this book apart from many is the way Jim approaches technology solutions based upon business drivers and criteria. Technology, in and of itself, does not enhance a business' ability to deliver value. However, when one approaches technology solutions, or innovation, based upon business criteria they are more likely to add value to the bottom line. Jim encapsulates the concept of value added technology solutions in his presentation of data communications. This book is well written, concise, and understandable - a must read for individuals focused on technology and business!

Ethics in the Humanities
Ethical Issues in College Writing is one of the most substantive collections of essays dealing with the complex topic of ethics that I have ever read. All of the essays are informative, articulate, clearly written, and brimming with ideas. It is obvious that the editors chose major scholars for their contributors. Equally impressive is the range of the approaches, from clasical rhetoric to contemporary theory of the rhizoid. I strongly recommend this collection to anyone interested in the role of ethics in the humanities classroom. This book will establish itself as a major influence over the coming decades. As I teacher, I plan to assign some of the readings to my students.
