The Best Photographic Atlas For Human Gross Anatomy
To all those who are looking for a photographic atlas of anatomy, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN McMINN's. This atlas has dissections and photos that are the epitomy of anatomical science. The book itself is beautifully organized into logical sections that integrate osteology, myology, and anatomy into a comprehensive package. After I read this book, I was ready for anything my professors could dish out on practicals. However, for written (theoretical) anatomy, you will need a descriptive atlas (I recommend Grant's). All in all, this book is extremely useful, and I recommend it to any allied health student who has to take anatomy.

The most beautiful anatomy photographs ever published!
The photos in this atlas could be exhibited in an art gallery: the dissections are pure class and the photography is breathtaking. I had no problems whatsoever identifying what was what because (1) there aren't arrows all over the place (the features are labelled with numbers) and (2) the size and resolution of the images are life-size or close (not those tiny pictures in other atlases and previous editions of this atlas). For the head and neck, no atlas can come close: the photos are exceptionally good (even for an atlas of this class) and show different perspectives of the same aspect in good quantity. Quantity however is the downside for the rest of the atlas. Although the photographs are great, there aren't really enough pictures for you to have a satisfying review session. It's probably this fact, and the high price of this book, that has caused Rohen & Yokochi's colour atlas to head the market in its stead. Rohen & Yokochi is a great atlas, but McMinn's is a GREAT atlas. If there were only more photos in McMinn's, all other atlases would be out of print.

Excellent Source of Knowledge
This CD is just fantastic ! Being a medical student... I was in total awe when Professor Peter Abrahams presented this to our class. Never was my attention so focused on one thing. I highly recommend this CD to any person in the medical field and who is interested in having an excellent grasp on the Anatomy of the Human Body. This CD gives a 3D aspect on every aspect of the human body - bones, muscles, joints etc and that's just the beginning. This is definitely one you should have as part of your medical resources.

Measures of Religiosity

Gold mine!
As someone that works in the field of spiritual formation I have found it exhausting to find a large variety of diagnostic tools in the spiritual realm. This book solves that problem and has proven to be an invaluable resource in my work. It is well worth the price and will serve as a timeless reference piece.

Wonderful reference in specialty field
Perhaps only a graduate student in psychology can appreciate the frustration garnered by searches for survey instruments. As one of the younger empirical sciences, psychology is replete with new questionnaires, tests, surveys, etc. every year. Often it is easier to design an original instrument than it is to find and evaluate an existing one. Obviously, the multiplication of new psychological instruments makes replication and comparison of experimental data more difficult.

This volume seeks to solve this problem for the psychology of religion. Over 120 instruments are listed. Each is introduced in detail covering all of the essential bases. Variables are identified. The history of the instrument's development and use is discussed, including limitations for current usage. Norms and standards are provided. Evidence for both reliability and validity are provided, as is the location in press and in subsequent research. Finally, the actual test instrument is appended.

The only possible improvement would be an index of contacts for obtaining approval to use each instrument.

If you have any influence over your librarian, use it to get a copy of this volume on file. When needed, it is absolutely indispensable.

Long overdue
We've needed a reference like this for many years. Every research and seminary library should have this and as well as any professionals doing research in the areas of Christian education, psychology of religion, etc. Kudos to Religious Education Press for supporting this project, but I hope this book can migrate to a major publisher which can support it through further editions. It could benefit from the inclusion of some more of the "spirituality styles" inventories such as those based on Jungian Psychological Type.

A Modern Russian Tragedy
Peters does it again. A magnificent combination of strong characters and geopolitical reality and a fine primer on the political importance of Uzbekistan that was written nearly a decade before 9/11.

Rich Characters
This book may be in the wrong category. I would not really place it in the action group becuase it is a display of a deep character driven novel. It is really a very interesting look at this difficult time for Russian's. It was also much more enjoyable then I thought it would be. The descriptions of the locations and main home were very good. I also liked the characters that were created. They had depth and feeling, not just scratch the surface to fill pages. The book is not the feel good hit of the year, it does had a rich plot that you need to keep up with, but the author rewards your efforts with a masterly written book. I think when it comes down to it that is the strength here, the writing is just very good, a lot of feeling comes out.

The man can WRITE.
The prologue. Ralph Peters gives you the perspective, the eyesight, of a Soviet Third Shock Army officer stationed in East Germany, 1989. Inside the Magdeberg headquarters, you drink vodka with the Russion generals. You smell the stink of their fear-sweat. You hear their outrage and lack of understanding as the East Germans protest down the streets against them. Against you.

Ralph Peters gets you so close to them, you not only feel the scratchy wool of their uniforms, but when word comes that the locals are tearing down the Berlin Wall... it hits you with the same end-of-the-world kidney punch as it must have hit real-life Soviet officers.

And that's just the first few pages. Next up, we have exotic locals, both hot and cold, intrigue, plots, Islamic terror, and some of the hottest (...romance) to ever land on the pages of a hardcover novel.

Plus the usual heaping dose Ralph Peters of tragedy.

Beg, borrow, buy, or steal this book.

a must buy for all New Testament scholars
All you wanted to know about the Acts, Hebrews, Catholic Epistles and Revelation are in this dictionary. A must buy for anybody wanting to know more about the New Testament. Together with the other three volumes, (Jesus and the Gospels; Paul and his letters; and New Testament background) it makes a very interesting dictionary on the New Testament. I found the articles on the Catholic Epistles and Textual Criticism very interesting and informative. Look out for the Old Testament series in 2002.

A Powerful Resource for Christians Everywhere!
In every respect, Dictionary of the Later New Testament is a magnificent achievement in the study of early Christianity. It is both authoritative and scholarly and takes the study of early New Testament literature to a new level. I found the articles on Hebrews and Acts to be especially well written and helpful, and the book's thorough coverage of other non-canonical early church literature was refreshing. Take my word, Dictionary of the Later New Testament is a "must have" for any serious student of the Bible. I guarantee, it won't just "sit" on your bookshelf, but rather, it will become one of your most trusted resources!

Italian for Educated Guessers: Shortcuts to the Language
Published in Paperback by Forza Pr (1985)
Authors: C. Peter Rosenbaum, Ralph Mapson, and C. Peter Rosenbaum
Amazon base price: $12.00
Average review score:

Wonderful threshold to the Italian language and to Italy.
As author of this book, I am pleased to quote a review written by Beverly Allen, Professor of French and Italian at Stanford University: "Dr. Rosenbaum has done a marvellous thing: he has written a very smart, adult, thorough introductory Italian grammar which is full of infectious good humour and a finely honed sensitivity to the problems facing the native English speaker when confronted by Italian. In all of this, his own enthusiastic openness to the world of Italian shines through not only as constant encouragement to the student, but also as constant entertainment. A wonderful threshold not just to the Italian language, but to Italy as well! EVVIVA!"

A gem for students of Italian
This book is a gem for students of the Italian language. It presents many hints for learning and remembering Italian words, with chapters like "The Regularities of Irregular Verbs," "Cognates: Faithful and Quasi," "Faking out Irregular Past Participles," and "How to Recognize, Remember, and Even Make, Nouns from Verbs." It also covers hints on how to speak easily in certain domains, such as "Popular Italian Words and Phrases," "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow: Expressions of Time," and "Hither, Thither, and Yon: Expressions of Place." All this is presented in an easy to read and entertaining manner, by an author who spent three years in Italy, and recorded those insights about the Italian language that were most helpful to him. It is truly, as the sub-title says, a "Shortcut to the Language."

Stahman's Shawls and Scarves: Lace Faroese-Shaped Shaws from the Neck Down & Scamen's Carves

Appreciation for Myrna Stahman's work
Myrna Stahman did a wonderful job with her research and planning for working a Faroese-Shaped Shawl from the neck down. Her information was detailed, informative, and creative. Her many hours of work have made my job so much easier! It does take some concentration to pursue these patterns. The end results are worth the challenge. Myrna Stahman has taken much of the frustration out of Faroese shawls. Her work allows you to pursue your own pattern designs with style and confident results.

In appreciation of all Stahman's work
I have knitted one shawl as presented in the book (Catharina), and one that I designed using Stahman's design guidelines. In addition, I have also made several Seaman's Scarves following her "Matthew" pattern (dedicated to the memory of Matthew Shepard). In all cases I used my own handspun yarns. While it took some concentration to adapt a totally different lace design to the Faroese shaping, I couldn't have done it without Stahman's many hours of planning and designing. I'm indebted to this book, and recommend it to adventurous novices or experienced knitters alike. [....]

Not Just for WWII Buffs
This is not a book for just WWII buffs. I guarantee that anyone who appreciates fascinating and well-written non-fiction with an original angle will love They Can't Take That Away From Me. What sold me was the unique and artistic style employed in this POW memoir; it brought a fresh perspective to Ralph Rentz's struggle, triumph and the invincibility of his nightmare.

More than just a "Sentimental Journey"
They Can't Take That Away From Me truly is an odyssey of one, rather atypical, American POW. However, it is more than just a "Sentimental Journey". This memoir is unlike any other WWII story, in that it reaches beyond the prosaic collage of nostalgic gore and glory and invites the reader to hear the song inside the bruised head of a musician who finds himself without his band, his saxophone and clarinet, without his freedom and even his own sanity, but never without his music. It is a tough tale, but it is softened with a lyrical literary style that makes it flow like the Pacific. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about music, adventure and inimitable tragedy.

Fantastic
Along with Holderin, Goethe, Schiller, Lessing, Nietzsche, Rilke, and Thomas Mann, Peter Handke is one of the greatest writers EVER to write in the German language. I've included Nietszche here because of his awsome control over the language and not because he is a fiction writer. That having been said, Across is, in my opinion, one of Handke's best books, however there are many others that are very close. Handke is obsessed with the detached observer and this work deals with a man who is fascinated by threshholds and how he goes through a kind of metaphysical transformation into one who has crossed the threshold and perhaps graduated to another level of being. The story is centered around an impartial observer of life who suddenly finds himself beating the crap out of a neo nazi and in this sense coming to "participate" in life. Handke's decriptions of nature and city landscapes are phenomenal in that they evoke with great color and clarity but without any sense of strain caused by forced metaphors or clunky words. There is an effortlessnes and beauty to the entire presentation, which in the hands of a less gifted writer would have come off as heavy and plodding and overdone.

A true masterpiece and what seems so strange is that this man is virtually unknown in America or Briatin. Even at Foyles in London the staff didn't know who I was talking about. Odd for a person who has been involved with famous directors like Wim Wenders...

One of the truly indispensible novels of the century in the German language. Stars? Hmmm. How many stars did the roof of the Cistene Chapel get?

Traitor

Author: Ralph Peters
Amazon base price: $6.99
Used price: $0.49
Collectible price: $4.36

Great story - very realistic
The portrayal of our defense industry in this story is unfortunately accurate. We have placed so much emphasis on "smart weapons", that we have forgotten the real effectiveness of our military. The action and pace of this book will keep the reader enthralled and they will not want to put it down.

best Peters in years
I've read almost all of Ralph Peters' novels, and this is probably my favorite to date. I passed it over in hardcover--frankly it didn't sound very interesting. I couldn't have been more wrong: it's one of the best written, engrossing novels I've read in a long time. Peters is one of the few military thriller writers that can name drop Thomas Hardy novels and actually make us believe his characters read them. I know what a cliche this sounds, but I couldn' t put it down. Peters has within him his best novel yet--some day he'll write the Once An Eagle of his generation of officers.

Contractors Can Really Be Traitors
After 25 years in the defense industry, watching the Services buy big things they don't need while neglecting small things they do (like enough pay so the troops don't have to be on food stamps), it continues to disturb me that the American taxpayer continues to allow Congress to sell out to what Ike Eisenhower called the "military-industrial complex". TRAITOR could have been a documentary. This is a great novel, thrilling and unpredictable, but it is also based on the real world and all the more gripping because of this.
