An amazing book...
At first, I couldn't really make any sense of this book and it sat on my shelf for months... but once I began to discuss it with a like-minded friend, it opened up new worlds to me. Whether or not the alchemical process it describes is the "literal truth," it does provide an alternative reading of the New Testament, and a potential key to other world mythology.

The book attempts to provide physiological reasons for aetheticism. The alchemical process is described as a purely physical process that creates the "God-Man," the "next step in human evolution." It links together many facets of esotericism and occultism from kundalini to cell salts, using a symbolic reading of the New Testament.

Read it along with "The Secret of the Golden Flower," a classic of Taoist internal alchemy while keeping in mind Luke 8:11 - "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God."

God Man: The Word Made Flesh.
I have been studying and reading this book for many years. At first there was so much new information about what was mythical and mystical and historical that I had to re-educate myself. The authors present a view of Jesus Christ and Christianity that was totally new to me. If the Holy Bible is really a Holistic book then "God Man:The Word Made Flesh" explains what the Mystery of Christ truly entails. Astrology, Chemistry, Physiology, Anatomy are the sciences that the ancients were writing of in all the ages that are represented in the biblical stories, allegories and parables. They were ultimately concerned with the human body and how it worked and preserving and passing this knowledge on. Dr. George W.Carey and Inez E.Perry make a connection between perfect health and the Biochemical tissue or cell salts. The Seed is the Word.(See Luke 8:11) There are three other books that should be read along with this one. They are "The Shadow of the Third Century:A Revaluation of Christianity", "Gerald Massey's Lectures",published by A&B Book Publishers and another publication by Inez E. Perry titled "The Zodiac and the Salts of Salvation". From this book I have come to the revelation that the Alchemists were searching mistakenly for a process that changed base metals into gold. They were searching for a precious substance. That substance is explained to be what the Mystery of Christ is all about.

If you need to be humbled....read this book
I am reminded by people like George Carver and Booker Washington that I have done so little, while they accomplished so very much. Besides the awe inspiring historical accounts of these two saints, the book is written with a kind of zeal that is obvious to the reader. It is obvious that the author loved writing it as much as we enjoy reading it (either that or he fakes it really well).

I have only a few books that I will make my children read (when they come of age)....this is one of them.

Men of Sacrifice
John Perry has delivered the goods as a researcher and biographer. In this book about two luminaries of the 20th Century, who brought the light of their torches from the 19th, we have a book that will inspire everyone. There are places where it will not leave you tearless.

Balance, honesty and contextual historicism are characteristic of Perry's work.

Most reading it will concur with this reviewer that Perry has found a niche in reminding us of those persons of sacrifice who are such a rare type of leader in this 21st century.

Take time to read this book and discover Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver whose lives transcended racial prejudice, reviling, misunderstanding and jealousy.

Highly recommended
The Charlton Story is a well-written and important tribute to one of America's greatest business entrepreneurs. Earle Perry Charlton, one of the five founding fathers who made the F.W. Woolworth Co. the most successful and well-known discount chain of all time, was also one of the most generous of men. His personal letters, many of which are reprinted in this book, provide insight into his strong business ethics ...his dealings with employees...and much more. This book is a fine addition to the library of anyone interested in business or biography.

High Island Treasure
I loved this book. The adventures happened on an island in Maine like ones near where I live. Mrs. Katherine says the twins can keep a treasure of "enormous value" that is hidden in her house, if they can find it! There is lots of excitement and a surprise ending.

A must read for all MIS professionals
This book is exceptional because it outlines very clearly the history of computing to date highlighting the good and bad decisions made by IT managers along the way. The authors then provide a blueprint for the future with the hp3000 system as the backbone in an open systems arena. If you are a hp3000 user this will reaffirm what you already knew about this marvelous computer and answer the questions of how to effectively use this machine in the future. If you are not familiar with the hp3000 you will definitely have an appreciation after this read. HP should summarize this material for promotion to get the word out.

The ultimate Phantom book
This book ROCKS!!! It is the closest you can get to the behind-the-scenes of Phantom. I got mine on an Amazon Auction(by the way, check out those auctions sometimes, they can be useful). It has the complete libretto at the back and amazingly sharp, clear pictures( they are so sharp you can even see the actors veins in their hands!).
This book has the history of the Paris Opera, then it goes on to tell how Gaston Leroux came up with Phantom, then the film versions of Phantom, then, of course, the Lloyd Webber version.
This book is perfect for the true Phantom Phan!

My favorite birthday present
As a hardcore Phantom fan, I am always looking for more information on the play. I came across this amazing book in the public library in my town and was amazed at the detail. There was so much that I didn't already know, and I knew a lot. I wanted to keep on renewing the book and never give it back but a good friend of mine, who is also very adamant about Phantom, went searching for this book that I wouldn't shut up about and bought me a copy. I love it. It includes info on the opera house, Gaston Leroux(the author of the novel on which Andrew Lloyd Webber's play is based), the story behind the novel, Lon Chaney's film, other versions of the film and other plays, Andrew Lloyd Webber's version, and the Libretto. This is the most complete and well written book on the play I've come across. George Perry reveals the intricacies of the production from make-up to costumes to set to everything. I consider this a valuable part of my Phantom collection and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes this play or theater in general. It rocks!

Christine, Angel!
This book is phenomenal! The information never ends! It details the opera house in Paris where this who story was supposed to take place. There is alot of information on the early movie forms of the story, including those who acted in them, as well as Gaston Leroux's book form. The bulk of the book is about Andrew Lloyd Webber though. There are so many pictures and stories about each of the characters, and the important peopel behind the scenes of the stage! This is a wonderful book whom anyone, Phantom fan or not is sure to enjoy!

A warm portrait a life in Depression-era East Texas.
Perry creates an easy and enjoyable read while at the same time providing deep insight into the lives of tenant farmers in the Depression-era deep South at the dawn of the welfare state. The author's resourceful and loyal creation is Sam Tucker and his family, whom Perry portrays as hardworking, neighborly, poverty stricken, and yet content. The story follows a myriad of concerns that faced many, if not most, poor and uneducated tenant farmers in East Texas during the 1930's. Whether White, Black, or Hispanic, they all faced the same obstacles of bad weather, ravenous insects, sick children, or belligerant neighbors. But Tucker, despite all of these unfortunate setbacks and tragedies, is able to maintain, sometimes through sheer will, an enviable optimism and determination to press on for the provision of his loved ones. Now Tucker is no "too good to be true" fellow, he indeed has faults, and it is these faults, as well as his responses to the tragic events that unfold in the story, that help to paint the lucid image of his glowing humanity and that of his family.

Interestingly, the book has a number of not so subtle parallels to a certain Steinbeck novel of the same period.

Highly recommended.

authentic and moving view of a tough time
I was introduced to this book in a Texas literature class in college and was completely charmed by it. Then I shared it with my grandfather, who spent his youth "workin' on the halves" in the very country inhabited by the characters in this book, the blackland prairie of Texas. My grandfather is not normally a voracious reader of anything besides the newspaper and the Bible, but he zipped through this book in a few days. As he returned it to me he said with a grin, "I didn't think he was gonna get it all in there, but he did!" A tribute to the authentic feel of the story. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in agrarian traditions, sharecropping, the 1930s, or the durability of the human spirit.

thank you mr.perry
This book uses extreme poverty as a backdrop to reveal the lyricism of the struggle to survive. In these days when materialism and cynicism are rampant, this book shows how "Just enough" is beautiful and satisfactory. I read this book as a young girl and its poetry is with me still

The Life of Python: The History of Something Completely Different

A Wonderful Beginner's Guide
I own the 1983 publication of this book. It is essentially the same, although Graham Chapman is still alive.

I found this book very interesting. I liked how Perry wrote an introduction of British Comedy leading up to Python. This gives you an idea of what the Pythons were up against.

I also thought it was nice to split up the book into the mini biographies of each Python and then to go into the Python years as a whole. I especially enjoyed the sections on John Cleese and Michael Palin. Perry has a way of picking out the more interesting details. He does a good job of outlining the Pythons early careers in television and comedy.

This is a great book, although there are better in-depth ones. I would reccomend this book for those who are unfamiliar with Monty Python and who want to learn more. For more lengthy and minute details on the Python People and the Python sketches, something like The First 280 Years of Monty Python might be better.

Great illustrations and coverage but repetitious
As a college student in the seventies, Monty Python's Flying Circus was part of my growing-up. Their brand of insane humor seems almost natural to me, since it was such a part of my life. This book, however, makes clear how revolutionary it really was.
Mostly, though, it's a history of Python, from what led into it both on television and at Oxford and (particularly) Cambridge, how it came about, and what happened afterwards. It discusses who worked with whom throughout (including on the show, which is significant: Graham Chapman and John Cleese were one pairing, Terry Jones and Michael Palin were another, while Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam tended to work alone).

It's copiously illustrated, including a demonstration of silly walks in the upper-right-hand corner that one can experience in motion by flipping the pages rapidly. My only quibble is that there seems to be an inordinate fondness for photographs from lesser-known efforts like Erik the Viking and The Missionaries.
The text is good overall, though it could be better organized. Early chapters cover the careers of each of the Pythons individually, then return to their history as a group. Since many of the Pythons worked together after the program went off, there's a significant amount of repetition as a result.

Overall, though, this is an excellent overview and appreciation of the Pythons and their remarkable accomplishments in bringing us a new brand of comedy.

Bedside, Bathtub, Armchair Companion to Something Different
I first read "The Life of Python" approzimately one month after my PBS station started running the series. I love it when I can find a book that goes beneath the facade, and shows you the backstage turmoils and et cetera; such is the case with this book. Not only do you get the inside story behind the scenes, but you also get mini-biographies of each of the Python team. This is a spectacular book for any Pythonite.

Like a biography of a rock band
Perry's first version of this biography of the Monty Python comedy team was published in 1983 and I read it in 1987. Some good friends who knew that I was python phanatic gave me this, not knowing of an earlier version--and how would they, because there is no indication on this book that it is a rewrite/reprint of anything. The indica page even states that this is a first edition and doesn't list the earlier book as the source of any material. Strange are the ways of publishers. The subject of Perry's writing deserves the update. The team has only grown in popularity over the intervening years and the members continue to entertain audiences with new work, from Gilliam's directing/writing career to Cleese's acting. The Life of Python reads like a biography of a rock band, which Python actually is more similar to than the traditional comedy group such as the Marx brothers. They are also, like the great rock groups of the sixties, now missing one member, making the chance of a true reformation impossible. Graham Chapman's death is not preventing Eric Idle from attempting a reunion "concert," this time to be presented in Las Vegas (the very idea of which appeals to the members' sense of humor).

The basic material of the book is to try to track each member of the group from their comedic beginnings to the formation of the troupe and then to the work following the cancellation of the TV series, all interwoven by time. Sounds like a mess, but it works. Perry interviewed all the members, sometimes more than once, and the book is liberally sprinkled with quotes. This new version has color photos as well as black and white, which fills the book (every page has a picture on it). This is probably the definitive biography of the group, although Kim "Howard" Johnson's The First 20X Years of Monty Python is a close second.

Fascinating Biographies on the six masters of British Humor
As a Monty Python follower, I love books like these. Although it's not full of hilarious lines, it does have great bios on all six members of the group. However, it starts with the pages completely out of order. This is apparently on purpose, but it doesn't help the book. I found it somehow easy to get into this book and read through the biographies. This book comes recommended, however, I always seem to get hold of such items right before they go out of stock. This one should still be out there. It's a treasure in my collection of Python books.
