A fine library reference
This guide to the new multicultural literature available for children and young adults is divided both by age group and ethnic group; from Hispanic American fiction and Native American oral traditions to African American fiction. Bibliographic listings include plot overviews, age group references, and insights on the ethnic literary traditions explored in each title. A fine library reference or a key to building a multicultural collection.

A terrific guide to finding out all about Us
This resource contains annotated bibliographies for books of fiction, oral tradition and poetry for these major groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native-Americans.

As stated in the preface, the resources are limited to those published 1985 through 1993 for individuals of preschool age through high school. Resources focus on the American experience, and do not include content or stories that occur in other locations. A total of 570 resources are listed in this title.

Resources were reviewed by an Advisory Board for suitability. Advisors are clearly identified and include librarians, professors and a teacher of various ethnic backgrounds. Resource annotations are listed by type (fiction, oral tradition, poetry) and ethnic group. Also, resources are indexed by title, writer, illustrator, grade level and subject.

Annotated citations are substantial and provide appropriate detail on the resource's content, quality, format, illustrations, interpretation of subject and suitability for intended audience. Through a quick reading of the citation, a teacher, librarian, parent or other user can easily determine whether the book might interest the reader, be topical for a lesson or plan, and serve well for individual reading, storytelling or other uses.

At first glance, I would include this item in my collection of multi-ethnic resources as it provides a relatively recent, comprehensive list of print materials with quality, objective and complete annotated citations. This book is limited only by its scope of ethnic groups. For example, I could not answer patron questions or provide resources about their European ethnic background.

Before making a final decision to buy this book, I would select and read a representative sampling of several listed resources. I could then compare and contrast the accuracy, completeness and objectivity of the resource's citation with my own independent read.

Understanding Hamlet: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (Literature in Context)
Published in Unknown Binding by Greenwood Pub Group (E) (1998)
Authors: Richard Corum, Agnes Regan Perkins, and Alethea K. Helbig
Amazon base price: $43.95

Eh.
The author sees Hamlet in a completely different light than I do - I disagreed with just about every statement he made. If you want a definitive analysis of Hamlet, I recommend J. Dover Wilson's "What Happens in Hamlet"

outstanding
corum is amazing. truly outstanding insight into shakespeare

Brillant, comprehensive look at Hamlet
This book presents Hamlet as Shakespeare's Everest, and Corum is your experienced serpa. I used this book to teach Hamlet to 9th graders and to expand my personal understanding of the play. The peak of the play is a crucial plea against tortured youth turing to violence; Corum's work is essential for your journey.

Tom Clancy: A Critical Companion (Critical Companions to Popular Contemporary Writers)
Published in Unknown Binding by Greenwood Pub Group (E) (1996)
Authors: Alethea K. Helbig, Agnes Regan Perkins, and Helen S. Garson
Amazon base price: $38.50

Envy?
Ok, far as I could tell, this book is all about two things. Envy of the author, and trying to make light of all his values. Clancy obviously values the armed servants of his country high and I fail to see why this is cause for diverse derisive comments about him as a person.

Mind you, I haven't read all of this, I could't stand to. I think the Clancy books stand on their own, without anyone having to do their best clobbering him for his great writing.

Read a Clancy book and form your own opinion, don't buy this highly colored collection of defamatory sentences.

A must have for any Clancy fan
This, the first book-length critical study of Clancy's writing, examines both the work and the man who is reflected in it: his knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes. In Clancy's eight novels, discussed and analyzed in separate chapters, we see both the emerging hero and the changing author. One of the most topical contemporary writers, Clancy has written of the Cold War, terrorism, the Vietnam War, the drug culture, and trade wars. Helen Garson's close examination of each of Clancy's novels helps the reader with explication of this wide-ranging and often difficult subject matter. Each novel is examined in its own chapter, with sections on plot development, characters, style, and themes. Garson also offers an alternative critical approach to each novel, giving the reader an additional perspective from which to read and analyze it. A biographical chapter discusses Clancy's life and career and the critical response to his work. A chapter on genre places him in the popular tradition. A complete bibliography of Clancy's work, critical sources, and a listing of reviews of all of his novels complete the work. Clancy's popularity with adults and young adults makes this an essential purchase for school and public libraries.
