HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS BOOK TO ME?
I received a copy of this book almost 10 years ago, when I was in a very dark time of my life. This book provided a moment of clarity to me that has continued to progress to this day. Long before Oprah and discovering your spirit, Paul Williams helped me to find mine. Thank you Mr. Williams!

The Nerve and Sinew of Truth
Das Energi by Paul Williams lives on my bookshelf between Richard Bach's Illusions and Hugh Prather's Notes to Myself. I got this book as a gift when I was in my twenties, and it changed my whole view of the world. Since then, I have given multiple copies to other people as gifts.

Paul Williams wrote Das Energi originally in the early '70's as a series of journal notes. The collection of thoughts soon developed an underground following for its insight, challenge to the dominant paradigms of truth, and breezy me-decade prose. Beauty, God, fear, truth, money, good, evil--these are just some of the topics dealt with in this browsable amalgamation of brief paragraphs and good humor.

Paraphrasing one thought from the book: you don't grow just from getting up and getting another beer from the refrigerator; you grow when you do things you don't know if you can do. This particular thought stuck with me and has come back to inspire me to face what is difficult from time to time.

Definitely worth your time...one of the few books that I keep in my permanent collection!

An extropian message that predates the extropian movement.
Paul Williams didn't have the terminalogy in the 70's, but this book is about the coming singularity; what Terrance McKenna calls "the concrescence." Big Change is on the near horizon, and this book is about establishing the right mindset to stay on your board when the wave really starts to pick up speed. This book is VERY quotable, and you'll be glad you've got a copy handy when your trip gets harsh.

Fan-Shaped Destiny Challenges; Rewards Reader
You stand in a primeval forest of millions of acres. It is dark. All about you, unseen, stand trees which have stretched themselves heavenward for 50, 100, or more years, their younger offspring, and all the complex understory of a virgin forest. You shine your flashlight directly ahead, illuminating the base of a sequoia 100 feet in diameter. "This," you declare, "is reality." Only when the moon rises do you see that reality is more than what the flashlight's beam exposes. Those who delve into The Fan-Shaped Destiny of William Seabrook may find themselves lying awake in the dark forest of galaxies, pondering that vastness. That which is momentarily illuminated by the flickering light of consciousness is also not all of creation.Imagine the universe at the moment just before the Big Bang. NOW, it begins. Yet in an equal and opposite universe, it does not. As the first Big Bang moves into the second moment of cosmic time, another Big Bang occurs in that alternate universe. In a third, it does not; in a fourth, the first Big Bang collapses. At this very moment, NOW, somewhere, the Big Bang begins. In another, it does not, but will in the moment to come. The expanding universe implodes in another. And every variant conceivable by the cosmic consciousness that powers it all even now unfolds. What we choose to illumine with our consciousness is our reality, for good or ill. Knowing that there are timelines in which one is blind, or blonde, or amphibian, or in which one took a risk untaken in present reality, is primarily useful in developing empathy. And yet, if everything which can happen has, or will, or won't, then in some world one might remember an earlier life; might make choices based on remnant memory; might open a door and find one's first love waiting, unspoiled, unaware of one's shortcomings. FSD is fundamentally an exploration of consciousness and reality, cloaked in a time-spanning love story and a quest to expiate the guilt of insufficient love.In some "alternate histories," the South wins the U.S. Civil War, Nazi Germany triumphs in World War II, the Age of Dinosaurs continues, or aliens rule the worlds. Paul Pipkin shines his light closer to home, into the dark woods of the human heart and the universal desire to "do it over and get it right."FSD has no aliens, no men in black, and its voodoo priestesses appear only in past tense. Its significant action is in the minds of its characters; in FSD's reality, reaching a higher level of understanding is a climactic act which, in other books, would require an epic space battle. It is long, quirky, personal, has a big cast of characters, uses big words and is very complicated ‹ like life, like quantum mechanics, like love, like sci fi at its best.

A unique and wonderful book
Have you ever thought that you remembered something clearly, and then been confronted by facts which proved events could not possibly have happened exactly the way you remembered? Could things have happened differently in an alternate world? As incredible as the idea of parallel universes may seem, it is taken quite seriously by some physicists - could it be that events such as those described in this book might really happen?

If you like science fiction (or even if you don't), or mysteries, or love stories, you'll like this. The author's unique writing style perfectly sets the mood for this memorable and haunting book. Two warnings are in order: 1)this is aimed at an adult audience, and 2) this is not your typical "light" read - this book demands your attention, but the effort will be well rewarded. In fact, it's worth reading a second time just to make sure you didn't miss anything.
It's a wild ride that will leave you wondering about the nature of reality, but not wondering at all about the talent of this promising new author. Highly recommended.

Worth reading, and reading again
Ever made a life-changing decision, then wondered down the road how things would have turned out had you chosen differently? Of course, we all have. William Seabrook was a American author of some renown the 1920s and '30s who wrote as if he got another chance - and maybe he did. This fabulous novel is a story within a story, the tale of a present-day Seabrook fan and scholar sleuthing the truth about Seabrook's complex, multi-layered life.

Through vivid, unconventional sex - this is definitely adult reading - Seabrook and his muse explored alternate states and multiple-universe destinies. Fact and reality slip and slide. Truth and fiction mesh. The ever-present now melds with past and future.

*The Fan-Shaped Destiny of William Seabrook* is a book about a journey, where paths fork and fork again, as well as cross one another and loop back. It's a thrilling read for non-linear thinkers.

I view *The Fan-Shaped Destiny of William Seabrook* as a wake-up call. There's magic afoot on this planet, deep in the quantum physics of the it. Through our own senses and stories such as this, we can heighten our experiences and appreciation of it.

I'm going to re-read this book, which is a rare statement for me. Most fiction loses me at some point, I skip to the ending, and that's the end of it. This fiction-nonfiction story is rich, haunting, and teasing in itself, and it's enriched my thinking about my own life and the choices I've made, the people I've met, and what may happen yet.

*The Fan-Shaped Destiny of William Seabrook* is an affirmation of life and possibilities. It set off firecrackers in my head, and for those who want more than a beach read, it's likely to do the same.

An awesome experience
Did you ever have an epiphany? One of those episodes sort of like dumping out an unfamiliar jigsaw puzzle, looking at it, and suddenly knowing what the picture was without putting it together? Reading this book is like one of those moments. Superbly written, exotic, erotic, and speculative, it shines a (black) light in a few corners of Quantum physics and Behold! a glowing Elvis appears to explain a few things about life and love you never dreamed were possible. This is a book to be savoured, treasured, and re-read.

I HAVE CHANGED AFTER READING THIS BOOK
I have heard of Richard Paul Evans, but have never read his books until now. I recieved The Locket in a fed ex package from my step-daughter. I read it in one night. Start to finnish. The Locket is a story of a longing heart and a yearn for love. It is a story of valuing every moment of your every day life. Is about the enduring qualities of hope and forgiveness. When I read the last page I was left in awe. The book has changed me. For anyone who has experienced the redemption of love, you will identify with this book. The Locket is the best book I've read in years, and since reading it, I have put all of Evans' books I've missed at the top of my Christmas list.

A Wonderful Story!
This is the only book I've read by this writer, but I will definitely read more of his books. It is a very well written and beautiful story. I couldn't stop reading it once I started. It is also a very quick read because of the brief chapters and the way that it is organized. Although it was a quick book to read and a fairly simple story, I still felt I had been challenged in thought by the time I finished the book. I also had a good cry in the end. Can't wait to pick up another of his books.

A book that you can't stop reading, such a love story!
My daughter volunters at a Public Library. She has given me some beautiful books. The "Locket" was a l998 Christmas Present. Prior to this she had given me The Christmas Box, The Letter, and Time Piece. It's difficult to say which I liked the best; they are all beautiful. I like the "size" easy to hold when you read lying down! Have given them for Christmas and birthday presents. I have enjoyed his writings so much would love to be able to meet him and his family. Lost my husband just a year ago; I thank the Lord that I have good eye sight there are so many wonderful books; computeers, TV, or movies can never take their place.

Excellent Publication/Version (Arden Shakespeare)
I looked long and hard (and asked many a scholar) for the "perfect" Shakespeare publication that I might purchase to study "King Henry V" (for a experiential education requirement, I had undertaken the translation of Henry V into American Sign Language). The Arden Shakespeare came highly recommended by everyone, and has lived up entirely to all its rave reviews.

I will never buy Shakespeare from another publisher. While these books may be slightly more expensive than a "mass market" edition, I believe that if you are going to take the time to read and understand Shakespeare, it is well worth the extra dollar or two. The Introduction, the images, and plethora of footnotes are irreplaceable and nearly neccessary for a full understanding of the play (for those of us who are not scholars already). The photocopy of the original Quatro text in the appendix is also very interesting.

All in all, well worth it! I recommend that you buy ALL of Shakespeare's work from Arden's critical editions.

We Few, We Happy Few
On D-Day British officers read Henry's famous words to their men as they approached the beach. When Churchill needed material for his famous "Few" speech, his thoughts turned to the pages of Henry V. From "once more into the breach" to "we happy few, we band of brothers" this play resonates with Shakespeare's paen to England's warrior king. Oh, you'll be a bit confused at the start if you haven't read Henry IV parts 1 and 2, but this is primarily the story of Henry V's victory at Agincourt. Whether the play glorifies war or just Henry you will have to decide. There is much food for thought here for the perceptive reader. But then Shakespeare is always provocative.

A brilliant play
Required to read Henry for my AP English Language class, I came into the play with a bias. I honestly felt that it would be a boring political play. I was utterly wrong! A huge fan of Shakespeare, I found Henry V to be a formidable match for the Bard's more critically acclaimed plays, such as Hamlet and Macbeth. Henry has it all! Shakespeare's attitude toward Henry the King is certainly one of admiration. By communicating the fact that an effective monarch must have a complete understanding of the common subjects (Pistol and Bardolph and Quickly), Shakespeare sets up Henry to be the ideal Christian king. The controlled language of Henry's speeches, particularly his response to the Dauphin's idiotic insult, also glorifies Henry. I certainly recommend this play to anyone, fan of Shakespeare or not.

Invisible Darkness - The Horrifying Case of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka
Published in Paperback by McArthur & Company (26 March, 1999)
Author: Stephen Williams
Amazon base price: $12.99

Invisible Darkness, Stephen Williams
This was good, although "Deadly Innocence" is my favorite out of the three (Nick Pron's also). Stephen Williams depicts Karla as being in charge of the situation at times, and although I think she is a horrific person, I think she was just going along with Paul, not masterminding everything. This couple fascinates me, because I just don't get it! But "Deadly Innocence" has a lot more interviews with people that knew them, and "Invisible Darkness" tries to tell the story from Paul and Karla's view, kind of. I do recommend reading this but be sure and get the other one also.

INVISIBLE DARKNESS is THE BOOK on the Bernardo/Homolka case!
Hello true-crime enthusiest!
I've read all six books on this case. Yes, there are truly six out there. I believe only O.J. Simpson and Charles Manson share this honor. Not all are available through amazon.com., however.
"Invisible Darkness" is easily the best book on this case. I believe this to be the reason that only this book out of the six released on this case started out as a hard-cover, instead of paper-back. It shows you what almost three years of research can uncover. I enjoyed the other quickly printed paperbacks as well, though.
I'm really looking forward to author Stephen William's new hardcover book on these crimes, "Karla: The Deal With The Devil", available on February 14, 2003, I believe. He is a true maverick of true-crime journalist.
I hope this helps.
"Invisible Darkness" is highly recommended!
Five ***** Stars. Do try to purchase the hardcover edition of this book (Invisible Darkness) though. It has 43 color photos!
Thanks! Jess

Hard to believe this is nonfiction
The crimes committed by Paul and Karla Homolka are unbelievable in their depravity. If you enjoy true crime, read this one. One of the best I have ever read.

Corridor of Storms

Another great read!...
It's wonderful when an author can create a sequel that's just as good as the first book in a series. This is one of those occasions. This book picks up where the first left off and thankfully is just as good. Like the first book, this story is full of drama, adventure, and excitement. The characters grow as they learn from their experiences, and new characters add more interest and plot twists. I'd recommend this book -- even if you don't typically read this type of fiction. It's that good.

Corridor of Storms
This book (like all of Sarabande's books) is worth reading more than once.

Enthralling!
I picked up this book along with the first in the series, "Beyond the Sea of Ice" never having heard of the series or the author, in a used book store. I have never in my life been so pleasantly surprised as I have been by these two books. "Corridor of Storms" kept me up every night for a week at least an hour past my usual bedtime; I was so enthralled by the wonderful characters. Anything can and does happen in William Sarabande's vividly animated land of ice and precarious survival. The author is not the least bit afraid to take chances and write out characters in sudden and shocking situations, which keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, never taking any character for granted. I have grown very fond of Torka and his woman Lonit, who had very realistic attraction for the fatally charming Navahk. All characters are true to life, with very human flaws and conflicting emotions. More than anything else, this book has shown with striking clarity what a tenuous grip all human beings had on their very existence in the age of ice. Before I had even finished with "Corridor of Storms", I made another trip to the used book store and stocked up on the next six volumes, eagerly anticipating the rest of the saga.

Spanish/English language learning
I was glad to find this book and Inglés Para Latinos to use as the vocabulary for our class of partners who help each other learn English and Spanish. (and their second levels for the more advanced speakers.) I've developed lesson plans that coordinate the 2 books and give practice (because the books are nearly all vocabulary.) The students like the encouraging tapes and the easy explanations in their own language of the meanings. And they want copies for their friends.

Funny AND useful -- similar style to the video version
The book is very funny yet informative, making it an easy read for the beginner. The video version (also published by Barron's) runs along similar lines, but with the added benefit of being able to see Bill Harvey in action.

Excellante
I brought this book to help me brush up on my Spanish. I spoke a little before I brought the book. I am a Cuban / Dominican that was born in the States and never really learned Spanish. This text helpped me like no other. What is great about this text is that it also give you words specific for different countries. The author gave words that are used in Cuba and Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. I highly Recommend this book to anyone first pass at learning Spanish.

A Very Small Farm

A delightful account
This lovely small book was a delight to read. The author made a considered and deliberate decision, at a very young age (while still in college) to lead a simpler life, close to the earth. I really admire his adherence to his principles and his problem -solving skills in a time when we all just call someone else to do things.

I loved reading about the methods he used for farming, building, and general survival with none of what we consider the amenities of life. I found myself feeling very calm as I read this book....a sure sign that the conveniences of modern life bring stress with them!

Intriguing
While a bit on the fringes of what is possible for most folks this little book does provide some very good glimpses of the virtues and rewards of simplicity as a life-style. I plan on returning to it again someday and would recommend it.

Every page was a pleasure
I enjoyed every page and how beauty is found in the small every day life that transpires on the farm. The animal companionship, the rewards of sowing and reaping, the well thought out strategies for self sufficiency. If you're looking to get off the corporate treadmill or break from the collective madness of modern society, here's a book to get you started on your way. The fact that the farm is on 20 acres brings this lifestyle into home range for others aspiring to slow down to nature's pace and experience nature's glory on a daily basis. Two thumbs up for this book - it has even inspired me to plant my first vegetable garden!

Comedy of Errors
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (1999)
Authors: William Shakespeare, Paul Werstine, and Barbara A. Mowat
Amazon base price: $11.55
Average review score:

accessible
this is shakespeare's most accessible comedy. it's a farce about mistaken identities among identical twins. nothing complicated here. the play has it's funny moments. it's not the bard's best comedy; that's 'much ado about nothing', imho. but this is not a bad place to start.

Shakespeare's Finest Comedy
"Methinks you are my glass, and not my brother."
So says Dromio of Ephesus, one of the members of two sets of estranged twins whose lives become comically intertwined in this delightful, ingenious, & aptly named Comedy of Errors. Being an avid Shakespeare fan and reader, I unequivocally consider The Comdey of Errors to be Shakespeare's finest and funniest comedy. Antipholus of Syracuse and his long lost twin Antipholus of Ephesus along with the two twin servants Dromio of Ephesus and Syracuse become unceasingly mistaken for each other making for a hilarious and entertaining farce of a play.

The Comedy of Errors has been copied many times since in literature, movies, & sitcoms, although it has never been duplicated.

The Comedy of Errors
There is no doubt that this comedy of Shakespeare's is delightful, crazy fun. You could call it the father (or mother) of all sit-coms. The play is suitable for middle school production and viewing, with some modifications. For my students and myself I prefer the Folger's edition of Shakespeare's plays for three reasons. First, the footnotes are easy to read and across from the text. 2. The choice of illustrations and 3. The introductory information. When purchasing for my students, though I have tried other publishers, I now always choose Folgers.
