Managing a team, a section, a department or an entire organization is both a science and an art. It's a science because there are certain basic concepts that have been proven successful and can be applied where applicable. It's an art because so much of the success of a manager lies in the personal manner in which that manager relates to the people he or she supervises.

In this book you will find the answers to most of your questions on both the science and art of human resources management. You'll pick up tips, techniques, suggestions and information on every aspect of dealing with your people from the first contact with prospective employees, through orienting and training them, compensating them, motivating them, dealing with their problems, all the way through their separation or termination.

This book is an easy read for a busy manager, loaded with specific examples anecdotes from real life HR situations. Whether you are an experienced manager or just beginning your career in management, this book will serve as a roadmap to successful leadership.

Fill That Vacancy With Minimum Grief!
Most books about recruitment are either comprehensive manuals by people who live on Planet IPD or they fit the "how to interview people" mould. This book is neither. It's a pragmatic manual for the recruitment process, from job analysis, through advertising and selection to appointment.

It's ideal for the practical manager who wants to fill his vacancy quickly and effectively and needs his questions answered. Well indexed and referenced, with a lively style and plenty of useful tips, it's a book you can comfortably read and comprehend on the train to work.

The complete idiot's guide to team building

Great book, but not what I was looking for...
This book is honest, entertaining, and jam-packed with great ideas, helpful hints, and how-to's. There is information about everything from reasons for using teams in the workplace, to forming strong ones, to helping yours become more successful. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know anything about working in teams!

Unfortunately, although this book was loaded with so much good stuff, it still didn't have what I wanted. I work in student affairs at a college, and I was looking for a book with activities on team-building to use with student groups. If this is what you're looking for, don't buy this book!

This book has some great stuff for anyone who works with teams, but be careful not to expect any more than concepts and explanations...no activities.

Author's comments
Has your company moved from traditional work groups to a team format? Is it contemplating such a move? Over 80 percent of Fortune 500 firms already are using teams as all or part of their organizational structure. Nobody know how many less well known companies are following suit.

The Complete Idiots Guide to Team Building will teach you the tools and techniques needed to be a successful team leader. It will enable those with previous supervisory experience to become aware of the changes they must make in management style to succeed in their new roles and what they must do to implement them. It will also prepare newly appointed leaders to move rapidly into productive leadership.

Not only team leaders, but also all team members can benefit from reading this book. Why? In many teams, members assume sub-team or project leadership from time to time. In addition, more and more organizations are turning to self-directed teams -- teams that have no permanent leader. All members are expected to be ready to lead a project.

This book is not an academic treatise, but a pragmatic guide to team leadership than can be immediately applied on the job. Read it to become acquainted with the many facets of team leadership. Keep this book handy to refer to when special problems arise.

Whether you are an experienced team leader, starting your first job, or you are preparing for promotion, this book will serve as a road map to successful leadership.

The real question is why more companies don't do this!
There is not much here that is brand new, but what are presented are solid concepts and philosophies that help create employee loyalty and business success. The book is an excellent and comprehensive look at the various methodologies to creating a company culture that attracts and retains great employees.

The basic areas of discussion are; Qualities and characteristics of a great corporate culture. Methodologies to diagnose your corporate culture. How to find great people, including solid tips on benefits, interviewing, new employee orientation, retention issues such as work/life balance, and leadership.

One of the more interesting and somewhat new approaches presented is the "Organizational MRI". Using the analogy of an MRI which looks deep inside a body for areas of concern, and organizational MRI is a process to look inside an organization for culture related issues which may impact employee loyalty and business results. It is an interesting and somewhat unique way to look at a familiar process. I also enjoyed the short section on the "worst techniques to obtain reliable information" which not surprisingly are used often in corporate America today.

The authors also correctly point out that the best way to create a great culture for success is to have the right people. In my experience as an HR professional, I have found that the fastest way to change a culture is to hire the right people who will quickly impact those around them in a positive manner. The book outlines several methods for interviewing and onboarding new employees to capitalize on what they can bring to the organization. Also, the authors make the valid point of looking for talent within the organization as well. Not new stuff, but well presented.

Overall, it is a book worth reading. The only real question is why more companies do not apply these time proven methods to build employee loyalty and business success.
