A Most Important Book
Paul J. Ciolino is the investigator who saved Anthony Porter from the death penalty by securing a confession from the real killer. It follows that a book written by Mr. Ciolino and Grace Elting Castle would be excellent It is.

This important book belongs in every investigator's office and in the libary of every courthouse.

Learn from the best investigators
The primary reason I took the time to read Advanced Forensic Criminal Investigations was because I am familiar with all of the authors, and felt an obligation to do so. I was also curious about what this book could possibly offer that hasn't been covered time and again in countless books, "hot-to" guides, articles and conferences.

From start to finish, this book makes you feel as if each author is talking directly to you, educating you, taking you under his or her wing, so to speak. Imagine if you could have a mentor, the opportunity to pick their brain, the chance to shadow an investigator who has an absolute understanding of the methods and techniques, and the ability to answer all of your questions.

So many books, manuals and articles are chock full of "how-tos" and helpful hints, but the real heart of the matter is not explored. The authors provide the secrets, the insights, the total package from A to Z. This book does not gloss over the subjects. It deals with all the aspects of the investigative steps, and provides relevant examples.

This book also makes you think. I found myself contemplating the many options I should have explored in the past which were so clearly explained in each and every chapter. I recalled techniques I had forgotten, and learned so many more new ones. I got an insight into the way that other fellow professional investigators handle their investigations. I may never become an expert in the areas covered in the book, but I now have an understanding of the methods and sciences covered in this publication, an understanding that can only make me a better educated, and knowledgeable, professional investigator.

This book is broken down into fifteen (15) chapters, written by some of the best investigators in the country. All of the chapters are very well written, concise, informative and jam packed with the techniques, and insights of hundreds of years of investigative experience. I consider each and every chapter an individual tool in my investigator's bag of tools. This book is not overwhelming, or a hard read, but draws you in from start to finish, like a good novel.

This is not a book that is once read and then used as a paper weight, or dust collector. Mine is on my desk, and I have and shall continue to refer to it often. There's a feeling you sometimes get when you finish a good novel, you want to tell your friends and share the experience with others. Few textbooks evoke that feeling. This one does.

Against Great Odds
Paul J. Ciolino & Grace E. Castle have dedicated thenselves to working for those who are unfortunate, wrongly convicted and incarcerated. Usually they are poor as well and unable to hire people to help them. As criminal defense investigators, they are not in the most popular of occupations. Against great odds they have enjoyed, or rather improperly convicted defendants have enjoyed, great successes.

Thier most recent contribution, Advanced Forensic Criminal Defense Investigations, is a wonderful work, one both investigators and criminal defense lawyers will want in thier libary. The topics covered are important and the contributing authors have all done well.

An heirloom
If you ever lived in Brooklyn or visited relatives there growing up, this book brings it all back to you. On the bottom of page 244, I was surprised to find a picture of my Grandma Josie, sitting in front of her house as she had throughout her life. Grandma is gone now . . . but she is forever immortalized in this book.

Fascinating study of St. Paul versus Kant on the Moral Law
I am saddened to see both that this fascinating little book has gone out of print and that it has been equally ignored by the theological community. Heinz W. Cassirer was the son of one of the most famous Kantian scholars of the 20th century, Ernst Cassirer. Like his father, he was for many decades a dedicated Kantian in his moral philosophy. Briefly, this entailed a belief about the possibility of fulfilling the demands of the moral law. Kant believed that the moral law placed an inescapable demand on every individual to fulfill its demands, and he further believed that the "ought" of the moral law logically meant that we "could" keep its demands. In other words, every individual is essentially capacitated to be a moral individual. Kant also felt that it was undeniable that none of us actually was able to keep the demands of the moral law because of our sensual nature. But since the demands of the moral law were inescapable, he believed that the demands of the moral law entailed human immortality, that in an afterlife where we would no longer be enthralled to a sensual nature--i.e., a body--we would be able to fully keep the laws demands. Still, the emphasis is on each individual's innate capacity to fulfill the laws demands, whether in this life or in an afterlife.

In middle age, however, Cassirer began to read the New Testament for the first time. In it, he was fascinated by a different account of the moral capacity of human nature. Unlike Kant, St. Paul was struck by the innate incapacity of human beings to do not merely what the moral law demanded, but what they wanted themselves to do. Gradually, and against his own intellectual inclinations, Cassirer came to feel that Paul, and not Kant, provided the more accurate understanding of human nature. This, of course, opens up the possibility greatly at odds with the overly rationalized nonsectarian religion one finds in Kant. In other words, it drives one more to a religion that sees the need for a redeemer as much as a legislator, Paul's own Christian faith.

Although Cassirer doesn't seem to be aware to be especially aware of his work, his book points very much in the direction of Kierkegaard's work, in particular PHILOSOPHICAL FRAGMENTS and THE SICKNESS UNTO DEATH. In both books Kierkegaard displays the logic of Christianity, in which people who are incapable of meeting the demands of the moral law are brought into contact with a redeemer who is the only remedy. I would have loved to see Cassirer explore this, but he doesn't seem to be aware of the sharp parallels to his own reading of Kant and St. Paul.

Inspiring!
The story of Christo Kulichev is inspiring for people of any faith who have undergone persecution for their faith. It is particularly inspiring for those of the Christian faith, challenging every believer to consider the role of suffering in the life of faith. In the end, it left me asking the question "Will those who come behind me find me faithful?" Kulichev can answer that question in the affirmative. By God's grace, may more of us be able to do so also.

A Must Read For Christians and Non-Christians Alike
Paul: A Man Of Grace and Grit is an extraordinary work detailing the life of the apostle Paul. The book outlines and explains the biblical and cultural history and signifigance of the life and times of Paul in a way I have never before discovered. I cannot recommend it enough. The book presents history mixed with important lessons mixed with timely analogies. It is a must read for Christians and non-Christians alike. I guarantee that reading it will affect your outlook on life and make you feel uplifted as it did me.

A challenging portrait of a man devoted to Christ
Charles Swindoll's Paul: A man of grace and grit is a fascinating look at one of the New Testament's biggest
contributors. Saul of Tarusus or better known as Paul the apostle is truly a man of grit. Born in a Jewish family.
A devout follower of Judaism. A man devoted to Jewish law and persecuting Christians. Swindoll fleshes out Saul from the book of Acts
in great detail. Saul persecuted Christians as Hitler persecuted Jews during the 1940's. Saul was a man who violently
opposed to Christ, his teachings, and his followers. He hunted them down. Tried them, and stoned them.
Odd that such a man would end up not only worshipping Jesus, but also writing some of the most beautiful words in the New Testament and spreading the gospel.
How strange that such a man who spewed forth such hate toward Christians would turn around and write such a beautiful
testament to love (Letter to Corinthians).

Swindoll's Paul is presented in 22 chapters, that cover everything from Paul's beginnings, meeting with Christ risen, to his ministry, and finally his death. Each chapter refers and reflects to appropriate bible passages, mostly those from Acts.
What was surprising was that each chapter also ended in a reflection. For example, chapter 2: The violent capture of a rebel will, covers Saul's encounter with Christ. Here a violent man is converted into a spokes person for the very person Saul hates the most. Amazing really.
Swindolls refers to this change as "Kicking against God's goads". "To kick against the goads" was a common expression found in both Greek and Latin literature, which rose from the practice of farmers goading their oxen in the fields. Goads were typically made from slender pieces of timber, blunt on one end and pointed on the other. Farmers used the pointed end to urge a stubborn ox into motion. Occasionally, the beast would kick at the goad. The more the ox kicked, the more likely it would stab into the flesh of it leg, causing pain.
Saul's conversion may not have been quick, but with Saul's previous violent lifestyle and Christ haunting words, those words may
have been the "goad" that pushed Saul into Paul and a past of hate into a future of preaching the gospel. Swindoll ends the chapter on a wonderful reflection on what "goads" you? Is God goading you perhaps?
Are you holding onto some rebellious attitude that perhaps the Lord is goading you to let go of?
Each chapter has a reflection like this. Each chapter not only brings us closer to how Paul lived, but also asks us to examine our relationship with God, our loved ones, and even ourselves.
This book is # 6 in the series. I'll have to pick up the previous books, and sincerely hope that Charles Swindoll adds a #7 in the series.

Paul: A Man Of Grit And Grace
I have had few heroes in my life. This book has brought one home to me. I hung on every word. My book is filled with tabs and notes. The world of Paul is not so much different from what we live today. Searching for God and the Truth, this one book has given me new hope and reinforced the faith I am growing in. Charles Swindoll was able to blend his experience and the experience of others in the study of Paul without distorting the word of God. At the end of 22 chapters I found a new beginning to my life.
