An Introduction to Programming and Problem Solving With Pascal

One of the excellent books I read... Unfortunately outdated.
This book and the other one on Advanced programming with Pascal are ideal for beginning computer science students to learn programming fundamentals and data structures. Needless to say, this book is outdated, but then, how many languages are "current" after two years? If you want the plain basics, get this book. If not, go for those monster 2000 page java books... Pascal is beautiful as simple things are.

Very Novel Approach
This new approach is excellent in teaching the concepts of object-oriented programming. It has very good exercises and takes the reader logically through the process of developing object oriented programs.

Highly recommended for first time graphic programmers.

If you want to become a Delphi expert, read this.
Simply put, if you want to not only learn Delphi, but learn some professional development tricks that can take you a long time to learn on your own or you want to learn how to be a better Delphi developer, you have to read this book. If you just want to learn Delphi in-and-of-its-own, then the Borland developer's guide is enough.

Pacheco, et al have included a lot of important, "real-world" and useable knowledge in this book and I know many people that overlook the breadth of knowledege imparted in its pages.

Read this if you want to be more than just a "Delphi" developer.

~ Michael Nigohosian, author - "The Secret Path to Contract Programming Riches: An Expert Consultant's Step-by-Step Guide That..."

Well Rounded Title
This is an excellent book, covers the entire Delphi 6 product about as well as any single book could. The chapters on the COM related technologies are very helpful. The New Internet features of Delphi 6 are also given in depth treatment. If you do Delphi 6, this book should be within reach at all times.

Puts you on the road to Delphi Guruhood
Unlike Cantu's Mastering Delphi 6, Delphi Developer's Guide is intended for those who are able to digest the Borland manuals and wish to take their Delphi knowledge even further. Absolutely no fluff here, every page contains interesting and useful info and the book as a whole is full of useful techniques you can use in real-world projects.

All aspects of Delphi 6 programming are covered here: from Win32 API calls to threading to CORBA to writing your own VCL components to advanced Delphi databasing topics and more importantly, each is covered in depth.

My favorite parts include the section where the author describes in very readable manner how Delphi evolved from the first version to version 6, highlighting the important differences and improvements introduced with each new version.

Another is the chapter on threads which explained thread basics very well and went a lot further (more than I was ready for actually). This chapter alone is so densely packed with info that it alone could be worth a third the price of the book!

Great book for intermediate Delphi programmers!
If you have programmed in another language before, but not Delphi, this is the book for you. After a quick overview of general programming concepts, Pascal data types, etc., it goes into a thorough description of the Delphi 3 language and features. I did wish that it had more info on database programming--5 chapters wasn't enough for me!

Excellent Advanced-Expert book
This is one of my favorite Delphi 3 books, as it covers material not easily found elsewhere. This is not a beginner's book by any means. The coverage of DLLs, COM, and threading is outstanding. This is a book for those who want to delve more deeply into the relationships between VCLs and the WinAPI.

The Best Delphi 3.0 Book I've Read
I purchased this book with a view to learning more about OLE and COM which is covered very comprehensively. But I found that once I started reading the other chapters I could not put the book down. Some people have commented that this book is a poor teaching aid. This is not what this book sets out to do. QUE's guide puts this book at Accomplished to Expert level. If you are an experienced, professional programmer who needs an excellent reference book, buy this. You will not regret it.

Macintosh Pascal Programming Primer: Inside the Toolbox Using Think Pascal
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (1991)
Authors: Dave Mark, Cartwright Reed, and David Mark
Amazon base price: $26.95
Used price: $6.65
Average review score:

This book is very easy to read, especially for a tech guide.
The Macintosh Programming Primer is especially helpfull for making your Pascal programs shine with that certain "Mac" look. It goes into detail about how to do everything from Dialog Boxes in ResEdit to how to incorporate asynchronous sound into your program. It's saved my butt a few times on major high school products, and MUCH easier to read than THINK reference, or Inside Mac. The only short coming to this book is that it is a bit out of date. It only supports toolbox thingys that where in system 6 and below, though it does do a very good job explaining them and their history.

oldie but goodie
This book introduced me to computer science more than a decade ago. Although computers have changed a lot in these years, the *science* has changed less. Parts of this book may seem antiquated, but overall, it still serves as a good introduction, better than most "modern" textbooks (which is both surprising and disappointing). It puts the emphasis on the principle of programming paradigm so as not to be over-burdened by covering the specific syntax of the programming language. Technically speaking, this book "teaches Pascal", but the lessons learned are just as applicable to C or LISP or JAVA.

New to Delphi? Start Here!!!
If your looking for a good informative read without the arcane language of the manuels. This book reviews the interface and components with accurate examples and provides a checklist for delivering database applications. They also include references for those who would persue the technical aspects of the underlying ObjectPascal language.

Buy it for the photos, forget the text
This slim volume is an introduction to the work of this forgotten Los Angeles builder/draftsman. He produced some wonderfully whimsical houses for a brief period of time.To compare his work to that of Schindler or Neutra is criminal (as was Kesling.) It is a pleasure to see the Schulman photographs and the redrawn floorplans. The text is not informative- it could have been left out entirely leaving room for more pictures and floorplans. For someone with a love of Los Angeles or Streamline Moderne architecture this inexpensive volume is worth a look. That it is inexpensive makes it worth the look.

Kesling takes another beating.
Although not without errors this book is well illustrated and quite interesting. The fact that Kesling may or may not have been a bit of a scoundrel only makes it more interesting. So let's just say this is the best book on Kesling, ok?

Seriously, the other reviews suggest the same snobbery that Kesling had to deal with when he was alive. I'm not an architect and therefore can only appreciate things that look good. But I must tell you, compared to the houses they build today, Kesling's look mighty fine to me. So lighten up, folks. Who knows, maybe Neutra or Schindler wrote a bad check or two!

Kesling Modern Structures
William Kesling was as good at architecture (despite a lack of formal training) as he was bad at business. In the middle of the Depression, he popularized moderne-style houses, but his career in LA was destroyed by a vindictive client. He re-established himself in La Jolla as a builder of rational, low cost housing. This elegant study, with its bw photographs by Julius Shulman and David Sadofski, and its preface by the late David Gebhard, restores a lost reputation.
