Average review score:

Comprehensive, up-to-date, practical guide.
Dr. Duvoisin and Dr. Sage have compiled an excellent guide that takes the reader from the basics of what Parkinson's disease is to the latest theories of the mechanisms of Parkinson's. It also goes ino great detail on the diffrent types of medications for the treatment of the disease. Included are exercise recomendations for the various stages and dietary considerations. This book is not just another Parkinson's disease book - it is a must for Care-giver and patient alike.

From an RN
This book is an informative guide to almost everything anyone would want to know about Parkinson's Disease. It has in depth information about diagnosis, meds, and a great amount of information on ways to manage this disease. The book was bought for a patient, but the nurses I work with all wanted a copy. In my opinion, the text is at a college reading level--it is not simplified, and readers not familiar with medical terms would want to keep a medical dictionary handy. It would make a very good resource for the patient with a high reading level and for members of the medical team who are looking for resources for patient education on Parkinson's Disease.

A classic and highly scholarly study of military theory
Clausewitz: A Biography by biographer Roger Parkinson relates the life and work of German officer and military theorist Carl Phillip Gottleib von Clausewitz (1780-1831) who is perhaps best known for his historic contribution to military studies titled "On War." Scrutinizing Clausewitz's life and ideas in the keenest detail, Clausewitz: A Biography is a classic and highly scholarly study of military theory, as well as a straightforward and very strongly recommended presentation of a great leader's life.

Interesting Military Biography
Roger Parkinson's short but highly readable biography of Field Marshal Blucher, "The Hussar General" is a great story. Originally published in 1975 and although only 264 pages in length he still manages to tell an interesting and fast paced account of this most interesting Prussian General. The book is packed with accounts of the battles and skirmishes that Blucher participated in during the battles of the French Revolutionary Wars and the later on during the Napoleonic Wars.

This is not an in-depth biography so don't expect too much detail in relation to the early life of Blucher, its mainly a military biography and covers that aspect of this great man's life adequately. To the military reader this book will provide an exciting story of a general that fought more battles against Napoleon Bonaparte than any other General. The narrative comes alive with accounts from participants in this exciting and horrifying but fascinating and bloody, period.

The book covers all his major actions and offers the reader a decent overview of his career. The story is well told and a number of maps are provided to assist the reader to follow the narrative although they are not of a high standard. Overall this is a great introduction to the life and times of General Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher.

Moore of Corunna

Excellent but left me hungry - 4.5 stars really!
There is not a lot available about, specifically, the retreat to Corunna in 1809. Christopher Hibbert's short book, "Corunna" is one of the few but you have to look hard to find a copy these days. In anticipation of a trip this summer to Spain organised to follow Sir John Moore's retreat and stand at Corunna, I found a copy of this and just finished it.

Excellent in that it gives a good broad brush picture of Sir John's life and military career but, as pure biography, I found it left too many questions unanswered. As a minor point, there is a brilliant cover on this book (my copy picked up second hand fortunately still had its dust-jacket) of Moore by Lawrence. I have seen the painting myself at the National Army Museum in Chelsea. However, we never learn in the book how Moore came to sit for the painting. Also, we never learn much about his relationship with Lady Hester Stanhope, surely one of the most fascinating female characters of the period. Then, too, we never learn whether Moore's promotions during his career, right up to General, were by merit or purchase. This is a fundamenal point to have omitted, in my view, as knowing the answer tells a lot about the man - both his personal fortune and his personal achievements. Moore came from a lower middle class family; there was no apparent money although in his very early years he had a noble patron in the Duke of Hamilton.

Too many questions for me, an avid reader of biography and a lover of this particular period of history for me to give this 5 stars. However, it was a cracking read, well illustrated and carefully based on the original sources, eg Moore's own journal, Napier and Oman (the foremost 19th c writers on the Peninsular War). A good addition to the little library my husband and I have on this period.

Summer, 1940: The Battle of Britain

Could Hitleer have won?
Could Hitler have conquered Britain in 1940? How close was that country to sharing the fate of Occupied Europe?

The common belief is that Hitler's failure to invade Great Britain in 1940 is inexplicable, and that the Battle of Britain was narrowly won, against overwhelming odds, by a very few British pilots.

In Summer, 1940, Roger Parkinson, a leading military historian, has drawn on extensive contemporary accounts and on hitherto unpublished documentation, up to the War Cabinet level, for a new view of these controversial events of World War II, in a telling and atmospheric recreation of those four tense months of 1940.
Other elements of special interest in Summer, 1940: Parkinson's account of the decision-making processes of the British and German High Commands; his descriptions of the actual battles for air supremacy; and new information on the air tactics of the Royal Air Force and the Luftwaffe.

Peninsular Primer
Readers will find this handsome paperback an affordable introduction to the Napoleonic campaigns on the Iberian peninsula. Nicely illustrated with artwork of peninsular scenes and good basic maps, it's well-laced with quotes from participants and salted with mood-setting Napieresque purple prose. Unfortunately it suffers from Anglo-centricism, as do most English-language texts on the subject, but does refrain from the most biting criticism of Englands's Iberian allies. Nevertheless Parkinson's work is a good starting point from which to move on to the best single-volume history, David Gate's THE SPANISH ULCER (available soon in PB). I also recommend De Rocca's In The PENINSULA With a FRENCH HUSSAR, Hibbert's WHEATLEY DIARY & RIFLEMAN HARRIS (both PB), and August Schaumann's delightful On The ROAD With WELLINGTON.
