The Dynamic Drum Major

A time warp and back again!
George N. Park's is my idol, and when I read this book (cover to cover in one sitting) I was amazed. He starts off with a trip back in time to what the art of drum majoring is all about, then slowly brings you to now with tips and tactics on everything you need to know. From conducting, to commands, to whistle use, even down to how to wrap a mace, Parks has it all. From the book alone, you learn how to be the best drum major you can be. With one of his Drum Major Acadamy experiences (2 years for me and running) it's a perfect way to become one of the best. All I can say is, EYES WITH PRIDE!!!

MUST READ FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE DRUM MAJORS!!!
The Dynamic Drum Major (although written in the mid eighties) is the know all guide to being a drum major. It is very extensive and very down to earth! It caovers everything about being a drum major from marching to conducting to leadership to even the mindset of a drum major!! Parks to this day instructs Summer camps and he still uses the book and says it needs no update! If want to know how to be a drum major or are interested in improving your skills, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!

Excellent guide for new and returning DM's at every level!!
I just got appointed Drum Major for my High School Marching Band, and immeadiately bought this book. While many of the calls to attention and other commands do not coincide with my director's style, the chapters on leadership, and attitude are excellent. They cover everything from preparing for your first rehearsel, to the largest production of your career. George N. Parks teaches the best Drum Major Camp in the country, and he really knows what he's talking about. While some of the pictures are amusing (written in '84), the knowledge gained from the text is priceless. I have passed the book on to the two other drum majors leading our band, and I am sure that it will improve our individual scores a great deal. If you are new Drum Major, or even a pro DM, this book is a great tool to strengthening your abilities as a leader, and role model. Highly reccomended. I only wish he would come out with another one.

A 5th Grade's Class Review
We just finished reading EVERGLADES by Jean Craighead George. The storyteller was a great idea. His words really caught our attention. This book, even though it was about real life, read like a fictional story. We especially liked the way Ms. Craighead George used various synonyms to express just how many creatures were in the Everglades in the beginning. In addition to the colorful language, the incredible illustrations by Wendell Miner made the book come to life. Above all, we learned we should respect nature. A great reading experience!

A spectacular environmental story
Another spectacular picture book from one of today's greatest writing/illustrating teams, EVERGLADES isn't just a story--it's an epic, one begun thousands of years ago, when water carved this spectacular ecosystem in Florida. Jean Craighead George, author of over eighty remarkable nature books for young readers, lends awe-inspiring power to the pages of the book, while Wendell Minor's lush, colorful illustrations beautifully depict this environment, full of wildlife and vitality. The book, like Ms. George's many others, also has an important lesson to tell. In JULIE OF THE WOLVES, we see the importance of Alaska's North Slope to the animals that inhabit this seemingly bleak, barren landscape (this area is now in danger of more oil line construction). In FRIGHTFUL'S MOUNTAIN (third in the MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN trilogy), we come to know the threatened peregrine falcon, and the many threats humans have posed to it. In EVERGLADES, one feels a strong admiration toward this magnificent, but, sadly, endangered environment, and those who, like me, have never visited it, will surely long to see it for themselves. The narration is moving and fascinating, as a Seminole Indian describes to a group of children the evolution of the Florida Everglades, and inspires them to fight to help it survive. When one visits the Everglades, they will want to see the alligators, wetlands, and panthers of Mr. Minor's paintings. If you enjoy EVERGLADES, you'll fall in love with other spectacular George/ Minor collaborations, such as ARCTIC SON, the story of Ms. George's grandson who lives at the northernmost point in Alaska. As he grows up, he learns about the Inupiat Eskimos who make their home there and the tundra land around him. Mr. Minor's illustrations are quite lovely, and there's as much snow and ice in ARCTIC SON as there was grass and water in EVERGLADES. There's also MORNING, NOON, AND NIGHT, which focuses on the day-to-day lives of different animals throughout the U.S. The text it written very poetically, and Mr. Minor's illustrations of raccoons, seals, antelope, and birds are full of warmth and inspiration. And next year, a new book entitled LONESOME GEORGE will be published. This is about the famous, oldest Galapagos tortoise. Ms. George has also written a new young adult book about the Okefenokee Swamp, which is sure to be as full of environmental splendor as EVERGLADES. I can't wait to see them.

The Everglades
Jean Craighead George has done it again! What a wonderful perspective and simple telling of the history of the Everglades. As told by a Seminole Indian to the children, this story (and wonderful illustrations) produces a profound respect for the "River of Grass" and its future. As a teacher in Florida, this book was a fantastic read-aloud to my students during our unit on the Everglades. I also used George's other ecological mystery, Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo, to study Florida's ecology.

Very useful reference work, even for non-peds and non-cards
In concise and clear language, Prof. Park explains how a
medical practitioner can diagnose alsmost any known
cardiac anomaly in a child.

Having a scientific but no medical background myself,
I found it very readable. Some knowledge of cardiac
anatomy and electrocardiography are a prerequisite.

What is especially good is Prof. Parks comprehensive
approach to the diagnosis: all posible pathologies are
listed and when a particular observation
is possible in normal patients, he doesn't forget to point
this out too.

I have only read the 2nd edition of the book (1988), so
I cannot vouch whether the latest (4th) is up to date
on recent advances in the field, be it in pacemaking
capabilities or teratogenic discoveries.

an excellent concise book on paed cardiology
this book was very helpful for me during my post graduate studies in paediatrics and i feel that every post graduate resident in paediatrics should have this book.the author has used simple language and written and covered this subject well
covering the recent advances in the topic as well.highly recommended.

Pediatric Cardiology made simple and understandable
As a resident in pediatrics, you face the usual time constraints, yet you want to prepare yourselfs for electives by reading a comprehensible text. For Cardiology, I have found with Park's "Pediatric Cardiology for the Practioner" an outstanding text, which I actually prefer over more recent review articles for its easy to understand approach. The text is easy to read and is supported by the style of the figures and schemes. This book provides more than an introductory text for the pediatric resident with a general focus, it also provides a valuable and readily accessible resource for cardiology fellows.

Sunday in the Park With George : Vocal Score
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (1997)
Author: Stephen Sondheim
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

There is only ¿colour and light¿!
This vocal score contains complete lyrics, dialogue, vocal line and piano accompaniment to the musical Sunday in the Park with George. The great aspect about the vocal score is that it contains ALL the music, even songs which are not featured on the CD. The arrangements are excellent and the melody has not been incorporated into the accompaniment, which is the case with many cheap vocal scores. Inside the score it is mentioned that it 'has been prepared from the composer's piano manuscript rather than the piano-conductors score so that it can be more useful to the rehearsal pianists.' As a result, when the orchestral parts are utilised, some small musical discrepancies will be found. Several of the musical themes are quite repetitive, however there are still almost 250 pages of music to enjoy. The music would be difficult to perform for someone who does not feel confidant playing piano. The difficulty lies in the modern rhythms and sometimes obscure tonal flavour of the music. The key signatures regularly change and g-flat and f-sharp major bob up often. As is characteristic of Sondheim's most recent musicals, the vocal lines would be difficult for singers. However, if you are a vocalist that could handle the music, it would be fantastic to own this book. I personally feel that this is an incredible vocal score of a brilliant musical. If you have a love of Sunday in the Park with George and you enjoy either singing or playing Sondheim I highly recommend this score.

A must have for any Sondheim Fanatic!
At first glance, the price for this selection may seem a trifle hefty. It is worth every penny to be able to own the score to the most emotional musical written by Sondheim. The music is amazing to listen to, but the experience is heightened when one is able to study the score in conjunction with an excellent recording. This score serves as a resource for anyone needing audition music, and it is great as a teaching tool in an advanced Broadway piano class. Incredible buy!

In this first volume of "Glaciers Secrets", George Ostrum delights readers with humor, excellent photography, and some very intriguing insight into one of the most beautiful places in the world; Glacier National Park- which he has hiked and explored his entire life. great campground guide
This is a very helpful campground guide for Oregon. Each listing gives a description of the campground and its surroundings, as well as vital stats like how many campsites there are. It includes out of the way forest service campgrounds with no amenities, as well as larger state campgrounds with many spaces and RV hookups, so this is a great guide for all campers.

4 great shows in one!
While I have all four of these books in Paperback and therefore have had no need to buy this book I have looked through this book and I think buying this one is a MUCH better idea than buying them seperately. This book includes pictures, Drawings by Al Hirschfield, Cut-Lyrics and more. All four of the shows are purely genius and provide you with laughter while provoking thoughts. This is a must for all Sondheim fans and musical fans and anyone interested in 4 great shows: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sunday in the Park With George,Sweeny Todd, and A Little Night Music.

Geologic Map of the Eastern Part of the Grand Canyon
Published in Paperback by Grand Canyon Association (1996)
Authors: William Breed, George Billingsley, and Peter Huntoon
Amazon base price: $12.00
Average review score:

A magnificent piece of work.
If you love maps, Grand Canyon, and geology, you will want to have this marvelous map on your wall. It's a big, dramatically colorful geologic map, covering the entire eastern region of the Canyon, where most of the hiking trails are located. Grand Canyon geology is simple and bold, and therefore eminently accessible to the amateur. This map, which makes it even more accessible, is a wonderful companion piece to the handful of geology books about the Canyon, and will inspire you to purchase one if you have not already done so. With a little effort, using the legend in the margin, you will soon learn to pick out every layer of rock that you can observe from the rim or encounter on your hike or float. Needless to say, the map is even more of a treasure-trove to the professional. More than a map, the beautifully printed sheet also includes several cross-sections of the Canyon, revealing what is going on beneath the surface. If you have visited the South Rim you may have seen this map. Two copies are on display in the entrance hall / cocktail lounge of the Arizona Steak House, adjacent to Bright Angel Lodge. Because of its size, it is not a map you would want to carry in your pack, but, tacked up on your wall or unrolled on a table, it will provide plenty of rock-solid lore as you plan your next Canyon adventure or remember the magic of your last visit.

Serious Canyon Guide
George Steck's Loop Hikes I & II contain detailed guides some obscure and long trips. Steck is the best source for information on long (4 - 10) hikes, especially on the North Rim. Information is detailed and useful, sufficient for planning a trip.

Steck's introudctions are worth the price of the books, particularly his narrative on dealing with the infamous Grand Canyon mice ("Mice 513, Steck 0").

Loop Hikes I covers four routes, ranging in length from 6 to 9 days. These hikes can be done in less time if you are willing to push. Shorter variations are also possible. This book includes the now popular Cranberry Canyon route to Deer Creek and Thunder River, a great introductory route for off-trail hiking.

Loop Hikes II covers five more routes with a number of variations and suggestions, and has an introduction by photographer and Steck hiking companion Gary Ladd. It also contains updated information on GHLH I routes.

These are comprehensive books for serious hikers and are fully self-contained -- a hiker new to the Canyon would find all the information needed here without consulting other guides (although gathering as much info as possible is always recommended).

The Guide to National Parks of the Southwest by Nicky Leach
Rarely does one find such a combination of gorgeous photographs, well written descriptions and useful information in one book. The book features 52 national parks, monuments, recreational areas, historical parks and historic sites. There are 170 color photos and a map of the southwest together with descriptions and access maps. George H.H. Huey's stunning photos include the magnificent vistas of the American Southwest, close up photographs of flowers and wildlife, accurate depictions of historical sites and much more. They portray the diversity and glorious landscapes of both famous and lesser-known gems of our the area. They bring life to the land and entice one to visit. Vickie J. Leach's descriptions give factual information of what to see at each site in a clear and concise manner. She gives useful information in an easy to read manner. I would heartily endorse this book. It is a joy to read and an excellent reference guide.
